- Taiwan’s diverse culture has given way to many popular restaurants which specialize in exotic cuisine. It is THE place for foodies who love fusion and more. Few places in Asia have so many different delicious dishes on offer, and all in one city!
"Tasty Taipei" tells the story of Taiwanese food - what's on the table, why it tastes the way it does and how it got there. In "Tasty Taipei," DW’s Taipei correspondent Tzung-Han Tsou takes Euromaxx host Meggin Leigh to the city’s culinary hotspots.
Tzung-Han Tsou and Meggin Leigh explore the various tastes of the city. Tsou is a Taipei native and knows all about the city’s culinary history. His co-host Meggin Leigh comes from abroad and offers an outsider’s perspective on the food.
They describe what they eat, how they experience it and how it tastes. They also explore the side dishes and drinks available on the menu. Meggin Leigh and Tzung-Han Tsou have lively discussions about the food and at the same time talk about the traditions and history behind Asian cuisine. They also marvel at the culinary possibilities in Taiwan's capital.
The dishes are presented in detail, but also the cultural-historical context is described: Where does the dish come from? Why is it so popular?
"Nowhere else does one eat as well as here," says Tzung-Han Tsou. Exploring Asia as a culinary melting pot, from Night Market stinky tofu and Din Tai Fung dumplings to 5-star beef noodles!

I love Taiwan People there are very Friendly
This is pretty much the most comprehensive Taiwanese food introduction video that I've watched with lots of great descriptions and history to go with it. Also not the typical western person who hates stinky dofu, I think her German heritage with sauerkraut which is also pickled cabbage. I spent 6 months in Taiwan and had most of these food and loved them. Another great video by DW.
Hi @Michael Clark, thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts on the topic! 🙂
It's great to see my hometown features on the international channel. Proud of our food cultures! If you read this comment, you should really consider planning your visit to Taiwan as you will find 'the most' friendly and beautiful country in Asia. I think this video will be widely shared on the Taiwanese media. Thanks for producing this great documentary! 我愛台灣~~
Speaking of Chinese music, it must be Taiwan. You can note that the annual Golden Melody Awards held in Taiwan is an indicator.
food is a perfect reason to visit Taiwan, (1990-1993 MTC) While we had a few other items on our agenda in 2010, 2014, and 2018 trips, FOOD is always on my mind for Taiwan. Plus it is nice to visit now with a better budget than when I lived there.
I love the friendly people , and the yummy different types of food. Taiwan is the second safe countries in the world.
Tiawan is a great country, and the food reflects that greatness
為這個吃貨天堂感到驕傲:)
Proud of this heaven for foodies
Watching this documentary in midnight makes me hungry…
🍜🍜🍝😊😊
Thank me later
Bangkok trip cancelled. It's Taipei for me
Dinesh Nair why
u wont regret it.
Take me with you!!!🙏🏽
bye bye another foreigner gone. try noodle over there I think its very good
Tasty Taipei is definitely a remarkable documentary! I truly did appreciate it so much. Thanks a lot for sharing! Keep it up!
Taiwan is absolutely a delicious food destination in the world. You won’t be regretted. Welcome all from the world!
The veggies in stinky tofu should be called taiwanese style pickled cabbage instead of kimchi. It's totally not the same thing.
This video makes me want to travel to Taipei with a good fun friend :)
I would love to be your friend.
Taipei is on my bucket list. I so much want to spend some time in Taipei.
I love this food documentary/travel. I hope to visit Taiwan in the near future! Make some more documentaries like this!
Maria G Acevedo Hope you take time and visit this beautiful nation, Taiwanese are friendly and very open-minded.
Yes CORRECT TAIPE FOODS IS VERY DELICIOUS
I wish you had also visited the Indigenous Taiwanese culture too. They are Austronesian and are the First Peoples of Taiwan.
The Taiwanese. A great bunch of lads.
I love TAIWAN 💛💛💛
Danke! This is an entertaining feature on Taiwan. DW is awesome!
Went to Taipei back in May and loved it! Wish I had more time to explore.
One important thing is missing in this video, the glorious Taiwanese breakfast joints, egg "pancake/crepe", deep fried dough sticks, soybean milk, pork baos, to name a few.
I have to say this is one of my favourite episodes. I need more of you guys together XD
Meggin did a great job introducing Taiwan! Fun host
meh
Suggest traveling in Winter time from November to January (cheaper accomodation), but avoid Chinese New year and school holidays)
Amazing. I love Taiwan bubble tea. BTW. I am amazed that the host did eat that century egg. Many Chinese hate it.
It's a food show. She has to say omg its sooooo good. Lieing asss bich.
Well actually many Taiwanese love the century egg😋
Welcome to Taiwan
As soon as you said Taiwan and food that was enough for us to bump Taiwan right to the top of our bucket list! 😁😍🙌
Many restaurants will have pictures for the menu too, but not all, and if you are having some problem, there is a good chance someone will help you to order, The Lunch Counters have everything out to see so you can point in those places.
They briefly talked about indigenous Taiwanese and it makes me wonder if their is a type of cuisine that the indigenous people produce that is available to the Han Chinese public? Because in the U.S. and Canada we are currently having it where First Nation cuisine is starting to be recognized.
this is a good question. Usually we Han Chinese visit the mountains or areas where have larger indigenous population and dine in their restaurants. There are some dishes are famous, especially with certain herbs and grilled meat.
The only dish I can think of that is too popular and might appear in Han restaurant is 土窯雞/甕仔雞 (pot-grill chicken ), a special way to grill/bake/smoke the whole chicken in a clay pot
yeah, they eat ferns
噗噗 Lots of countries eat fern, especially the fiddleheads in spring
@@THEmightyQUINN1900 lol they eat animals and plants, nothing special
What about braised pork over rice? Nothing is more Taiwanese than a humble bowl of braised pork over rice. Also, she should have gone to Tainan, the capital of Taiwanese food.
The small restaurant out in front of and just to the right and down some stairs from the National Palace Museum has that dish and many other classic Taiwanese dishes. Simple great food, gets overlooked sometimes.
food in Taiwan is hygiene and well presented. Their food taste different from any SE Asian. A bit off.
Ia'm a vegetarian and i would love to visit Taiwan.
So much delicious food😋🤤...let me just go there!!!😩🙏🏽💚
Traveled to Taiwan many times. Sorry I couldn’t eat the stinky tofu or century eggs. I loved dumpling and Din Tai Fung and beef noodle soup. And I really miss the Taiwan foot massage.
KC L There’re a lots of street food that you could try and the view of the mountain is beautiful.
Hellen 0.0 Oh yes delicious foods. And I enjoyed going into the mountains to the tea plantation. I love high mountain tea!
goosebumps
Taiwan is not mainly on Buddhism...but majority of Taoism.
Wow.. except for the night market, this is so upscale. Everything looks delicious
Wow I want to visit Taiwan , this was a great documentary
actually still has a lot of the traditional Taiwanese food not introduced here, too bad. they are the best in the world. come and try it. like sticky rice, soft bean flour, oil rice, ... from the native Taiwanese long time ago. you will not believe it until you try it.
nice
Taipei Taiwan
And thats make me hungry
DW please cover himalayan culture of Nepal, Bhutan & Tibet.
Hey Suresh, we currently only have one documentary on Nepal, which deals with a more sensitive topic: bit.ly/2kbx7Fn
It all looks very tasty. I wonder what the prices are like.
Just depends where you eat, in the small alley areas a lunch box might be 3 to 6 USD, but it also depends on how much you eat, many options for a low budget, and some amazing places at many price points. Despite having traveled to France, the absolute number one place for Creme Bruelee was in Taiwan,,, Night Markets such as Rao He, also have lower cost versions of things like Teppanyaki (Benihana style) food for decent prices,
lots of small foods (on stick, or in small bowel) all over the place too if you never want to have a "proper" meal.
So, 100NT lunch, sure that is possible, noodles/ lunch box/ other just look for lines and certain parts of town in the alleys, or out at ShrLin Night Market you can have a hundred or more options of places to eat all in one spot.
Great documentary! Wish they had tried some vegetarian food too. 😊
The typical Taiwan diet is about 10% meat, much healthier than our USA version of a diet, way back when I lived there (almost 30 years ago) it was hard for the pure vegetarians because a small amount of meat was in a lot of dishes, but full vegetarian restaurants are more common now, and for the non-Vegans, that are ok with eating some other things it is absolutely a fantastic place.
yummy!
When the white lady goes in for that BIG second bite of stinky tofu... respect! 😂😂😂
8:20 Small note: Baoan Temple is not a Buddhist temple...
Yup. A mixture of folk religion and taoism
I never fully sorted out the local "Land Gods" from the "Regional Gods", but I do admire the "Goddess of the Sea" and the "God of War" as well, both important to the subject I teach (Business)
Nice food
yummy
And the Dutch have influenced it too
Not much to be honest they weren't there for long.
I believe that Taiwan have estimated 27 million population
Beef from heaven
It's interesting that she feels that the century egg tastes like a normal egg
Is there are series with this host?
100%
Very nicely directed and Taiwanese food culture and people's hospitality are famous....but German documentary trying to be humorous it simply doesn't work
Not long enough
Meggin is gorgeous ❤️💕Tsou would look good as a crossdresser.
lol her reactions
A guten Appetit
I heard that Taiwan used to be an American territory and Taipei was Formosa.
It used to be part of Japan (not America*) but you are correct about Formosa.
There are still many natives who carry on the Formosa culture today in Taiwan.
The Chinese civil war drove many from mainland China to flee to Formosa (which was originally supposed to be a temporary retreat) and Formosa remain under military rule for many years until the 1990s when there was a bloodless reform to Democracy. Lee Teng hui whom many known as Mr.Democracy was Taiwan's first democratically elected leader.
Technically Formosa can become its independent nation as one of the few alternatives instead of the other options such as unifying with the mainland that has fallen to the ghost of USSR's communism =/, maintaining the status quo, restarting the civil war, etc. E.g It become its own country and the Taiwanese are just migrant settlers who are permanently welcome there.
What's a "mainland"?
haha lol yeah good question
a sewer where a fat winnie the pooh lives
DW Pls next time send a more warm and adventurous woman to do the food docu. The host in Taiwan was very good, but the woman should have been more relaxed and more fun. Thanks so much. 😜
Most of the night market food are quite greasy and not very healthy. Better eat some greens before chowing in there
Kimchi is Korean^^*
I love Taiwan, Free China.
You are right. Kimchi is from Korea. We also have similar preserved vegetable but taste different.
@@seanwu1968 I know a lot of countries have their own Kimchi^^* Thanks!
our kimchi usually eat with 「stinky tofu」,taste sweet ,not spicy~ call「台式泡菜」
That Kimchi is not from Korea, you idiot.
Bruh, careful with your words. We've seen what freedom has done to the middle east.
I was kinda surprised that he'd said 波霸奶茶 instead of 珍珠奶茶... just saying...
Wer ist der Gewinner....Erfinder....?
Ibenta any country ..
Guy was getting too close to the lady. She was getting uncomfortable i think
The male host is actually openly gay and married! So don't worry
South Korea
Was anyone else uncomfortable while they were watching this? “As my Eunuch, I order you to try it first.”
Greetings from mainland China
All I have to say is that Taipei puts Beijing to shame. Can’t name one dish Beijing does better, even Peking Duck! Lol
The REAL China.
Gene Louie yeah
The REAL Taiwan
Fxxx 凸 China 凸
426!!8964!!
so that's what they call dim sum.
Pavel S only HKers call that kind of food as “dim sum” then British introduced that wording to westerners.
In fact, that is such a huge misunderstanding.
The rest of Chinese in the world, the word “dim sun” (點心) is just a general name for snacks or cookies but never dumplings kind of food.
@@tonychen1062 That explains a lot actually. What is the Chinese name for the big dumpling filled with broth? Do you know by chance?
@@pavels479 it's Xiao Long Bao
My tawanese friend Calum eates spiders
It’s not fair to subject her to stinky tofu !! It’s only for Taiwan die hards
I love it myself
Not trying to be negative or anything . But she kinda looks like she doesn’t wanna be there
Please let Andrew Zimmer know your opinion on this stinky tofu.
Taiwan is what Indonesia would look like if we conquered by the Chinese.
Saccharin presenter! 8 minutes in, I'm gone.
Bubble tea is the stupidest tea in the world. Taiwan however is great, people are wonderful.
true i always take out all those marbles before drinking that. Other than that, good country
The lady presenter is German? She talks and acts like one of those cheap and cheesy overblown American food entertainers when she teams up with that, wanna be an American, Chinese guy. Apart from that quite interesting.
She is American. But works for DW in Berlin as a reporter.
God speak binary number?
what?
these presenters are intolerably saccharine
I cant believe that she liked the Stinky Tofu!! I m Chinese but I absolutely hate Stinky Tofu. It smells like a decaying rat.. gosh!
My brief overnight layover years ago led me to believe that taiwanese food is boring. I traveled the world but I haven't seen Any unique, healthy food from them. I Do like Taiwanese, just never their food.
This host is terrible. She shouldn't be hosting food documentaries.
I’m not buying the tofu tasting good.
I think it tastes worse than it smells.
It really tastes delicious, but she had a very mild version, you need to try the version with lots of the stinky dofu sauce.
I hate century egg. Tastes nothing like a normal egg as she says. Tastes really salty and fermented. I puked everything out.
This shouldnt be on this channel
No, it's basically like an US soap opera.
Hi David, could you please elaborate ? Stay tuned & tell us...
beef-eating must not be condoned in this climate charge environment.
This woman shouldn't be there, no clue and she is no foodie.
most boring food street i ever saw
why wear chin dynasty clothes when eating the hot pot?
Good topic, but another terribl host.
Too bad.
