Genius. Considering this music was first rolled out 25 years ago, it’s still so fresh. When I travel abroad, stuck in a hotel, the BBC News theme literally stops me missing home and gets me dancing all by myself!
Ever since we started getting BBC World here in Canada back in 2003, I remember loving this tune. Which I found strange, because I had never really noticed incidental "news music" before, but I just loved this, in particular the part of the tune they'd play during the weather updates.
From the 1998/99 and onward to 2001 there actually was a 12 inch single for sale (BBC says it has released it bc of 'heavy request for the news break filler' - when the written contents appeared on the screen for some minutes before each TOTH News). This came along with three different mixes as well. Thanks to David for these amazing mixes btw!
I love the music, the first time I listened to it was in Brussels, a rainy morning in November 2005...sounds contemporary, fresh and serious at the same time. It also gives me a certain Eurythmics vibe, at the same time whenever I listen to it anywhere I think immediately of the BBC
I love this so much! Really want to find the sound bed from BBC world news 24 that was just in the background when the news text was power point (ish), sliding past, from around 2002
I've always loved the music of BBC News. Great interview. :) BTW, I know that beginning song from one of Delfy's videos, and the way it was introduced was hilarious! lmao
I very much enjoyed, although not on this programme all the stuff he wrote for BBC World Service Radio in 2007 - Europe Today was my favourite at the time which replaced Andy Neave’s long term versions dating back to 1992, Neave rescored them in 2000, so if anymore has those please upload.
I wish they would go back to the 1999 music. Especially the BBC World music from 1999 is so good, I listen to the breakfiller mix nearly every day at work.
Until I heard this interview I was not aware that David Lowe was involved in Touch & Go. Surely this would make him the millennial equivalent of (Lord) David Dundas: has a minor pop hit, gets commissioned to produce a television theme and the rest is history?
Wonder if he's heard the amazing Bill Bailey mix bc that's just exploded into so many people remixing. I actually got woken by my 'BBC Breaking News' alert on my phone this morning and came digging on UA-cam to send a link of the theme to my boyfriend... His words "it's like techno music mixed with a bomb countdown!" I will never not love this theme! Even Greg James has used the news theme as part of his live set!
I am Japanese and can't speak english. I have my text translated by Google. I really like the BBC countdown. Could you translate this interview video into Japanese? I am very interested in what he speaks. Thank you.
You can use Audacity and make your own with the generate tone and silence options. Pips are at 1000Hz, the first five pips are 0.1s long, each silence is 0.9s, and the last pip is 0.5s
Wow if BBC if that nifty at producing music why can't they have there own music label. I think the BBC is missing a major trick if they are biggest news/TV/radio network in UK an Europe why can't they have there own music label why think this way they the studios an talent two produce music an also think this way people listen two singers an there lirics so if BBC wanna infurlance society start there.
Such a shame that the Beeb ditching long-term composer, George Fenton and those wonderful orchestral scores. However, like Lowe’s original 1999 National News jingles. But it was a BBC decision based upon public consultation, but highly time for a change now. The bbc might one day wake up and commission a new National News score.
it's ok, i know people love it and rave about it, but it's not really my cup of tea; perhaps because it represents the end of analogue and the beginning of dumbed down digital.

Obviously, when David Lowe composed the BBC News Theme, he had no idea that it would become such a global pop-culture icon.
Skeeter Sanders - but not George Fenton after he lost the contract in 1999 to Lowe for his National News, after so many wonderful years at the BBC.
No one knows when they make a hit. :)
Love this BBC opening music & the countdown !! Cool Interview !!
Ram Varanasi - BBC Generic theme was the answer to your comment, all built around corporate feel for the 21st century, thinking outside of the box.
Epic, perfectectly fitted, can't imagine a better corporate sound for BBC.

Might've been the BBC World music. I believe Lowe has it still available for purchase on his site.

Oh David - thanks for the Themes - they are wonderful - simple but great - Love it
I love how much she absolutely adores his music, it’s super dope 👌
Been loving David Lowe's music since 1988. He did "Just another mission" for a game called Carrier Command.

That theme tune is absolutely iconic I recognise and I love that theme tune to BBC News.
Theme Buildup starts at 6:28
I love this so much! Really want to find the sound bed from BBC world news 24 that was just in the background when the news text was power point (ish), sliding past, from around 2002
So fascinating. I have always loved this piece of music, and all its variations.
David Lowe, genius, superb!
I've always loved the music of BBC News. Great interview. :)

Very interesting, great to hear all the regional variations.

Listening to BBC for years, from the USA. The musical lead is always distinctive and recently, more poignant. Good to know where it comes from.
Beautiful radio

This guy is a quiet legend
The Welsh theme as a bit of a 'Daft Punk' vibe to it.
The BBC
Countdown is my favourite
skip to 6:16 for BBC News tune... simply wow!
Incredible!
They need to release an collection of the music that was used since the last release in 2001, including the breakfillers used in 2004 and 2007

The BBC Blocks...and the BBC Pips. Iconic.

Yes he has, David is my brother in law & he told me about the Bill Bailey sketch, in David's own words, he thinks it's "Brilliant!"
cool and really nice sounding guy
The theme of the BBC is the best of the world. That's why hundreds of televisions pirate the theme of the BBC
I'M BRAZILIAN AND MUST AGREE. IT'S A MASTERPIECE. EVOLVING WITH TIMES.
Lovely interview - fascintaing... her comment at the very end was oddly snide, though!
Does anyone know how to recreate the sound of the bassline?
9:44 the original
To David Lowe Korea Please provide sound to the famous entertainment broadcasting infinite challenges!

I really like the BBC countdown.

Thank you.
Probably easier to learn English.
I love the buildup of it.
Right after the end of the British Empire,
The BBC countdown started to go through the world
Sadly, the towering presenter, Janice Long passed away on 25 December 2021 aged 66.
Does anyone know where you can find just the boop sound effect?
Just search for BBC pips
You can use Audacity and make your own with the generate tone and silence options. Pips are at 1000Hz, the first five pips are 0.1s long, each silence is 0.9s, and the last pip is 0.5s
i like the irish one
And now Ben Howell and Dua Lipa, a right bop... as it were!
7:30 this is some Doctor Who stuff
Massive!

Edward Brooks They do. It’s called Demon Music and is a subsidiary of their commercial arm, BBC Studios.

Fenton's 9 'o clock is a pinnacle achievement.
Let’s see if John Williams sticks around long enough for the BBC to commission him for a package.
Too marks in your reply, his 6 News 1993-1999 was also a fantastic achievement, how he wrote for all those instruments was so cleaver.
Frazzle Face AGREED
Jordan Bahr LET’S HOPE SO

Maybe you'll more into the previous 'flags theme'?
Bring back the George Fenton themes - they were truly genius. Not like the David Lowe dustbin lid crap.
I've never liked it. The 80s themes were stunning. Unbelievable depth and grandeur, befitting of the seriousness.
