I also switched to ten finger grip a while ago, I had issues with the left thumb getting crushed and hurting. The ten finger grip made the club face a lot calmer and it closed easier for me
Yeah the hockey grip is a brilliant idea for beginners. It forces you to pull the club through impact by rotating your hips. I switched to baseball grip but i havent tried your right hand thing. Next range session ill try it with a bucket of balls
Crazy timing on your video. I am a single planer and this week I ran out to the course for a quick round and the first range ball I hit during my warmup almost dropped me to my knees as my middle finger on my right hand is infected as I work with my hands for a living and somehow messed it up. So I quickly switched from my normal overlap to a 10 finger grip to see if I could manage a swing with no pain. Sure enough it worked and I played the whole round 10 fingered whichI have never done. Some of my best ball striking in a long time. So now I am going to work on this as it seems to have benefited my single plane swing.
Wow John, that IS good timing. I know all about the hand injuries, so I hope it heals up soon. If you find yourself in a situation where you're spraying the shots all over, try splitting the grip just a tad and see if it helps get you back from the brink. Great stuff!
Good vid and all the information is spot on. Splitting the hands apart where they don't touch is in my opinion the best way one can use to actually control the face of the club. It's hard enough to control simply from the g forces one puts on the club and shaft during the motion, you almost have to give up that ability of control to actually control what you can't, if that makes since. Good vid thanks Chad!!!
Thanks Bill! Yeah, from what I've tried, it's just a really great way to add some insurance that you aren't going to make some sort of manipulation that would derail it all.
A few years back I had a wicked slice on my drive and saw a tip about using a split ten finger grip. It cured my slice by forcing the club head more closed at impact until I could get used to the feel with my normal grip. I use it now and then still. Have thought about trying the ten finger with my SPS. Have a GC3 on the way and setting up an indoor simulator room so I can practice a lot more over the winter and be able to see the results of different things I am trying. Hopefully by next season I will be ready to break 80. Wish I had You Tube and all the new technology back when I was learning the game. What a game changer it is.
Its funny you posted this…I actually started messing around with the 10 finger grip earlier today with some foam balls in the yard. I found it to be surprisingly comfortable and very stable. My distance actually increased with the 10 finger but I was having a slight pull. I didn’t mess around with it much but I was encouraged to try it at the range this week.
Your description of the change to ten finger immediately caused me to be curious about when in your evolution this happened. I'm assuming this wasn't something that came along with the Moe single plane project but it wasn't clear to me if that was the case or not. As it turns out, yours is quite close to Moe Norman's grip from what I have determined including the ten finger aspect. Very thorough explanation of your grip. Nice job. One of the advantages of the split hand drill is interesting because apparently (credit to Monte Scheinblum) it has been shown in a study that all tour pros get rid of the vertical wrist angle completely before they horizontally release the club into impact and the split hand grip essentially forces you to swing this way.
I never even entertained a 10 finger grip until the single plane swing review. The exception being maybe when I was first playing. But probably at the end of week 1 or beginning of week 2. I think in golf, for whatever reason, there is this almost unrecognized need to "look the part". In general, most guys look at the guys on TV, or watch a random teacher, and it's all the Vardon grip. Ten fingers, arms straight, etc, seems almost taboo, because you look "amateur". Most guys value looking good over playing great.
Thanks for all your videos! I have been playing with the Single for about a year now. Wish I could show you how I use it. I have found a powerful secret in the grip that no one else talks about. I see you are a Carolina Panthers fan. I am guessing you are in Charlotte. If there is a place you play often, perhaps I can catch up with you and share. I appreciate this swing so very much over the two plane. I am just north of Charlotte, so let me know. Thanks again for the videos.
Was watching the Average Golfer the other day and he is going down the fat grip road. His Driver distance is way more and straighter. There is something about Golf that is different from all other racket/bat games. The handle is skinny and the over lapping/interlocking grips. I doubt the guys back when you had to defend your life and house with a broad sword messed about with any skinny handles or thought much about over lapping grips when swinging at someones head. Our DNA tells us thicker is better and hands apart as well. I have been interlocking since I was about 6 since that was what I was taught by my Dad and I just never think of trying something else....until now !
Wow. Never thought of the sword comparison. That's really smart. And also, other sports, with any kind of leverage or speed involved, no skinny handles. In golf, it's likely that, due to the skinny shaft, the grip was never thought of as needing additional thickness. Simpler to just wrap the end of the shaft. But, in that simple decision, they may have derailed the entire course of golf for the worse. Fatter grips. Maybe that's a huge game changer.
@@GolfTestDummy I’ve tried everything from standard align grips, medium, to Jumbomax size small ultralight (they’re not small by any means) and the Jumbomax felt great utilizing Junge’s S4impact SP swing. However, the only caveat and why I finally landed on GP+4 medium grips is I couldn’t turn the driver over at all and pushed the ball every time. Including FW’s. Worth a try tho.
I’ve been using the 10 finger grip for driving on and off for years, I’ve just started using it for all shots as I have quite weak wrists from breaks and from over use with work (carpentry) my results so far have been mixed but it does feel much stronger! My miss with 10 finger grip is straight left! Going to persevere as my golf is only getting worse 🤣👍🏼
Matt, I completely understand and can identify whole-heartedly. I was a brick and stone mason for years, and like carpentry, the wrists are like they've been dropped and shattered like a glass, and duct taped back together. Pain is constant. Sometimes I wake myself up in the middle of the night to sharp, stabbing, hot pain. Anything to alleviate that is huge.
I use the 10 finger grip as well. Just more comfortable. Todd Graves prefers overlapping but doesn't discourage 10 finger. Simply says you run the risk of losing distance as you shorting the club. Don't know that i necessarily agree.but if true i figure better shorter and in the fairway beats longer but potentially out of control and in the trees. I havent experienced any significant loss in distance myself. Curious question, you said that you bring your hand in from the side with the pad of the thumb to the side of the other thumb. Is that say the center of the pad or more the line formed in the palm when you close the hand? For me its the line. That puts thumb on top of thumb straight down the shaft. More neutral with the v's pointing straight at me and not at my right shoulder. Quite like George Knudson. Anyway, just interested.
That's a great question. The side of my left thumb kind of tucks in to the line of my right hand, in that "cup" that forms when you start to close your hand.
@@GolfTestDummy that sounds like what i do. Feel that it is more like the back of the lead hand points to the target and the trail palm points to the target(asif i was throwing or slapping the ball so to speak) toward the target. Thanks for.the calcification. Personally, i find that i push or hook if my grip gets too strong. Thus the reason for what i do. Then I'm neither left nor right. Just straight down the middle.
btw i just used with r10 the crossfinger, might have to try the 10 finger grip to see if distance change, cause yes... the 10 fingers its more comfortable. But i dont feel bad with crossfingers. the overlap yes, that makes those 2 fingers hurt a lot. cause of preassure.
Have enjoyed watching this series! Been trying the SPS and having favorable results. Your vids have shown me that I may need to 'interpret" things my way on my SPS journey. Are you using regular grips or Midsize?? Do you think grip size makes any difference? I love the feeling of an oversized grip! Thanks for all you do!
Michael I really appreciate the kind words. Definitely find your SPS. As far as grips, I have juggled this around a thousand times in my head and I am no closer to having a definite. I use standard right now, but I think I'm gonna try midsized soon.
the thing i didnt like about the 10 fingers, its that i put a LOT of preassure on the left hand pinky and it hurts a lot. cause liek u said, the pistol finger index of left its lose, so the other 3 make the preassure, but if you change to interlock, now ull see the preassure its on index middle and the other i dont know the name... and the pinky gets lose... and once i did that change, it felt comfortable to me. hope i made sense on my explanation. Im from Mexico and dont know if it makes sense my english.
i think thats more like a personal feel no? cause (btw i use the single plane swing) and i was using at first the 10 fingers like Moe Norman, but then i tried the overlap... and i didnt like it, until i went back to crossfingers. and i feel very good with cross fingers. But either the crossfingers or the 10 finger is good, but i prefer the crossfinger cause it made lets say the grip shorter (one finger shorter) which it might translate in more distance. or so it kinda explains todd Graves.
@@GolfTestDummy aye, and my hands are not so strong as yours problly, cause im only 5'6 so im not a tall strong guy. i feel the 10 fingers would work better on guys with bigger strong hands like Moe. still next time i turn on my r10 ill try again the 10 fingers ... but what is a NO NO totally is the overlap... that just a lot of preassure on my pinky of right side cause of the pistol index of left hand... and it hurts me. what im working on its my right hand thumb on the swing... cause i feel a lot of preassure on the first swing and i have to kinda move it to the right a bit while im making the swing.
