He went backwards. You will open that door on your way back from the "3rd" area. I'm trying to figure out how the hell I missed my first rig upgrade!?

It's not helpful. You can only use that shortcut if you completed the 3rd area, you should have used the normal way. Also if you wanted to use a shortcut better using the elevator, you end up directly in the ex02 room.
