There are so many things that I really appreciate about this channel. Subtle things that are easy to take for granted. I love how the place has as much of a voice as you do. I love how you have become an integral part of your surroundings without overwhelming it, without pissing on it, without shouting and bravado. There are so many voices that you allow to whisper all around you and incorporate into each video. Some of my favorite things are the silence; the sound of the wind in the surrounding trees, the light and dark shadows. I like how the sounds of your different activities echo throughout the forest not in an industrial way but more like a Scout camp at night, bugle calls, screen doors closing, a snapping fire. You have created a place which allows you and your visitors to be a part of the surroundings, not in place of them. I appreciate that.
i feel so relaxed to watch you, even when you are building. you make it look easy, preparing your food you are natural is in your wonderful nature that surrounds you... thank you.. watching in Cyprus...
I am filled with gratitude to you for sharing your off grid living life with Cali. I cancelled my TV last year and don't miss it one bit. This channel has been my "tv entertainment" when time allows between work, gardening and cooking. Thank you and blessed be.
My entire kingdom for a porch such as this. It just feels right. If you would have told me the porch was not there a year ago (which I know it was not) I would turn to you and say, "You don't see the porch?" It is as if it was already standing there before the snow started to fly last year. It fits! Thank you.
Just a note of how much enjoyment I get from watching your amazing lifestyle. I am almost 70 and not in good health, but I find I live vicariously through your experience and get great relaxation watching. I also get little ideas for things to do in my own home. I would love to see your wife in it once in a while, maybe with wild game recipes or how she bakes her bread, how she deals with the lifestyle, etc. Cali is an angel! I hope to see you for a long time. Thanks.
There are so many things that I liked about this episode: porch is looking great, bear stew is making me hungry, Cali and you at the like is a refreshing scene on a hot summer day, "shave and a haircut" $2 bucks. An old refrain!? Just made my Labor day complete, Thank You and God Bless. Give a big smooch to Cali from Mike & Ronnie
I never get tired of watching you build and interacting with Cali. That porch is looking amazing. I wish I knew about this life style some 20 to 25 years ago when I was young enough and had energy.
The cabin/outbuildings should easily remain there 300 years plus, as solid as their planner/builder.. Well done, Shawn, stay healthy.. You give us all hope.. Many thanks..
Porch is looking fantastic, dinner looked scrumptious, and to train a dog not to shake off water until they have come back with the feathered friends is an art too. 🌿🌲🍁
As I sat watching tv n the news about hurricane Dorian.. That is about to arrive near Central Florida.. Your notification came in! I shut off the drone of hurricane doom n gloom weather news and relaxed with your vid! Just in time! Thanks for sharing! ATB👍😎👍from stormy Wintergarden, Florida!
Extension cables for your solar to battery are cheap. Get a 25 ft or so and leave the heavy battery near or in the cabin, protected, and move the panels around. That really helped me make it easier.
Another good day at the homestead. Can’t wait to see the porch done. Since I am female, of course I am already envisioning flower plants hanging from the porch and yard decor of all sorts in my mind! My dream of a cabin in the woods can’t come to fruition, but I am decorating through yours! Lol. Wonderful job Shawn and Cali.
Always a pleasure watching your videos. When you walk around with your tool belt on, it sounds like man made wind chimes. Smile. That bear roast was to die for. Bet it tasted as good as it looked. Thanks for sharing.
Hello! I am Russian, I live in Russia. I really like what you do. You are worthy of respect. I want to wish you good luck. Sorry to use Google translator.
The porch is already fantastic, and will only get better at each step. What a treat to enjoy the shaded breezes during your meals. After working & cooking all day, it's a perfect spot in which to enjoy your meal & there don't seem to be as many bugs now! Nice.
Shawn, thank you for not having an annoying go pro background music. We prefer no music at all but the ones you occasionally have are done tastefully and express the feel in a good way. Sound of nature is best even if it is silence.
I live in uk..Southampton on the south coast..work in a busy city and your vids just help me chill out when I'm home, how you have built your cabin etc with no electric tools...your skills and craftsmanship are amazing and are a credit to you..all the best from the uk. 👌
Good Labour day Monday Shawn & Cali🐕! I have found it so calm and peaceful watching your videos! Your porch is looking really good! The meat & vegetables look sooo good and mouth watering! 👍🐕😋🍽
Shawn you are the best at everything you set your mind to do. I live vicariously through you. When I was younger I often played in the woods or by the sea. Living off the land was child's play! You have created your slice of Heaven. ✌ ❤ 🐕 👨
I mean this as a compliment: There is something so sexy about a man shaving and constructing stuff with wood. Thanks for the Cali fix. She is so adorable. FYI, you may know this,; when she is rubbing up against you that's her doggie way of giving you a hug and doggie language for " I love you"
You were talking about doing slabs for bunks and also about how quickly the porch is becoming your favorite spot to hang out. It seems like it would be a good idea to make the bunks so they can fold up or down against the cabin wall so you don’t lose the usable floor space for daytime enjoyment. Also, if you make the slabs so they have insulation foam (basement closed cell, 2”) they could increase the insulation on that wall for the winter nights. Just a thought... The pot roast looked so yummy!
It's so awesome to see other views from the cabin now that you have the side porch! It gives us a whole new look at your cabin 👍 everything looks great Shawn!
Gee and to think all these years I have paid someone to do that for me and yet there you are making it look so simple and easy - self haircuts and shave. And Cali receiving a good brush down and then what happens Daddy throws your favourite toy into the bush and off you go to fetch and come back just as bedraggled as before - ah swimming time again, the perfect solution to the bug problem. Cheers Shawn.
The porch looks great and is almost finished ! It's great to work when you want , go swimming, and fish too ! That Bear stew looked delicious ! Thanks for sharing you time with us Shawn !
The part of the video from haircut to shaving and then grooming the dog, was just a tease for us women watching this channel. What a nice looking man and what a lucky woman your wife is. And... I enjoy watching the building things bit too... lol....
Been thinking about watching your Monday installment all day at work. Couldn't wait to get home, to brew a cuppa and see what you are up to next. I'm not disappointed. Great work, Shawn. You are simply the best.
Fantastic porch Shawn. This will be a good place to eat and relax and feed the critters. Now you need mallard house shoes. Cali will be fetching your house shoes. Lol. Y'all have a great time.
Good to see you always wear safety glasses. Bear roast looks yummy. Beautiful setting, beautiful life and Cali ain’t too bad either. Thanks for sharing your adventures
Thank you for showing the next step in making your porch. I saw the bear roast smell rising from the outdoor kitchen, must have drawn you to eat making your nose and stomach wake up. I use to see my Dad building barns and the like, but here in California, city living is a far cry from the Canadian great outdoors. I am glad you are so steady. Ur videos are awesome!
Thank you for sharing all the work you do wish I would of thought years ago about living off grid and homesteading it looks so peaceful and serene, I to was in a job that sucked the life out of me and a car accident and 2 back surgeries messed me up more but Im at peace because I dont have to work that job anymore.
I love my porch. Husband and I sit out there and watch storms, he grills out there all summer and sometimes in all seasons - so glad we added it. Another great video, thank you Shaun. That bear roast and veggies look scrumptious. My husband grows a beard in winter but keeps it well trimmed, I like that!
I liked the beard better, you look more like you fit in the forest with a beard. Jeramiah Johnson!! The porch is a great addition to the cabin, it will be the place to be. You were already talkin about sleeping out there. Cali looked so tranquil when you were grooming her, such a good dog, she has a good life!! Keep up the great work. Always looking for the next video adventure, thank you.
I've gotten my sister-in-law hooked on your channel. We are getting ready to sync it to the big screen and watch it together. I didn't tell her I already watched it once. Lol

Just found your channel very recently and I'm really enjoying it. My father built homes and one was featured in a national home beautiful magazine. I loved to watch him work. Since he is gone now, thankfully I can watch you.. I've been catching up or trying to, but 362 episodes, anyway I have plenty of time since I'm old myself and can't go because of health issues. I love the way you treat your dog, she is precious and really got a laugh when she did her Golden Angels in the snow. I love these channels of yours they are the best, wish they were on regular TV. Hi Shawn. Following you all the way from South Africa. Love every minute. With the bear stew I thought I would give you some ideas of stews we make here over the fire. We make it in what is called a potjie (Dutch origin, little pot, pronounced: poikie) which is a pot with three legs. The fire/smoke gives a unique taste as I imagine your stews in the oven would have. There are many opinions (like any good dish) about what makes a great "potjie" but most would have it has to do with the order in which the various ingredients are added. So it goes something like this: brown the onions, add the meat and brown (hot fire). Add spice and/or stock/wine and let it simmer for a looooong time, especially oxtail or lamb knuckles (low fire). Then add the veg with some more liquid, but not too much and from here onward, no more stirring (some people are very serious about this part!) so a low fire to prevent the meat from burning. We use various different woods to barbecue (we call it a braai) over here and each one gives a slightly different flavour to the potjie. Give it a try some time. Jacques
I love the life I live vicariously through you lol!! Cali is such a precious and beautiful girl and I love her. She is such a wonderful companion to you Shawn. God Bless y’all from south central Texas. 🙋🏼♀️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
Thanks. I like that calm in the vids. I’m soon going out myself again for a while to find my peace. I love what you share onine for all of us. A Big Thank You!
Lather brush is my favorite way to shave. Thought your choice of brushes was very creative! Made me lol in a good way. May have to give it a shot. I learn something new every video. Thank you so much Shawn for all you do for us.
Perfect! Nothing like a porch. A good porch is the best part of a house, in my opinion. 😉 So lovely. Great video! I was wishing you had been able to have a big fresh salad to go along with that yummy roast and veggies!! Thanks for sharing today. ♥️🙏🐾🛶🏚 🐻🌲
Long time ago, 45 years, my dad used to shave with a knife, that is an ecological way cos the knife lasts for ever. Good week for you in your paradise, sir.
Have been looking a Murphy beds and thought of your guest porch beds. If you made them fold out of the way, it would leave you more room for other uses on the porch. Flip up for use as tables or beds. Just a thought. Really a fan of your efforts. Never disappointed. 'Thanks.
I follow you until France,, since few weeks! merci pour votre simplicité, votre courage et votre ingéniosité! votre cabane est super maintenant! elle est rustique mais très belle! bless for you and cali!!
Hi shawn excellent thanks for the upload of a video so early in the week I was getting frustrated that you only upload on fridays I wish you would upload more often thanks great content as usual
SHAWN YOU ARE A DREAM MAN, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CANNOT DO, I AM AMAZED , YOU REMIND ME OF MY FRIEND HUSBAND , HE PASSED LAST YEAR , HE WAS ALWAYS CARING AND COOKING, SHOPPING, FISHING, AND WORKING , I HAVE SUCH GOOD MEMORIES , WONDERFUL MAN . LOVE LUCY**
I just cut my own hair last week for the first time and it actually turned out great. 22 dollars for a decent pair of clippers from the store, full kit with scissors and everything. So glad I took the risk, got tired of nobody cutting it the way I wanted.
Man, that porch adds so much to the cabin! What a HUGE difference! Completely changes the look, but definitely for the better!
Yeah, but it will be very dark in the cabin...
@@aniamak He could add another window to the back side if he wanted to(?)
@@aniamak Not really. Most of the sun comes from the front and right side of the cabin. The porch is on the [west] side.
@@willierants5880 Oh, I didn't know, that is from the north side.... Than is the porch OK
@@willierants5880 By the way... I would be my dream, to spend a few years in such cabin....

Yep it will be useful for the winter that you can come out to the porch and enjoy the view
He has suggested as much in a previous video while discussing the possibilities of additions to the cabin.
I used to brush my dogs and just like Cali they knew they were getting groomed and loved. She looked like she was in heaven! Enjoyed your vlog.
What a lovely way to start “Labor Day” down here in the states! Watching you continue to build your dream is inspiring and entertaining.🌲
Thanks. I like that calm in the vids. I’m soon going out myself again for a while to find my peace. I love what you share onine for all of us. A Big Thank You!
When you started to eat that stew my mouth started to salivate and my stomach growled. Looked really delicious.
Lather brush is my favorite way to shave. Thought your choice of brushes was very creative! Made me lol in a good way. May have to give it a shot. I learn something new every video. Thank you so much Shawn for all you do for us.
Perfect end to a day "Fishing" Cabin is looking good.
That is quite a tranquil setting that you have made for yourself! It could be a settlers village! Nice work!
Enjoy the lake Cali, winter is soon to be headed our way.
Don't forget to trim down the fur between Cali's pads before the snow and cold gets too bad.
Зима близко)))))
Cali looks sooo happy.. A rescued dog will be happy to play with her too.
Perfect! Nothing like a porch. A good porch is the best part of a house, in my opinion. 😉
So lovely. Great video! I was wishing you had been able to have a big fresh salad to go along with that yummy roast and veggies!!
Thanks for sharing today.

Wow, the porch adds a nice flare to the cabin. Changes the look.
I like this channel...is amazin how he is living there..God bless you❤
Long time ago, 45 years, my dad used to shave with a knife, that is an ecological way cos the knife lasts for ever. Good week for you in your paradise, sir.
I envy this mans hard work dedication and lifestyle. If I was able to achieve all that he has I could die a happy man
Have been looking a Murphy beds and thought of your guest porch beds. If you made them fold out of the way, it would leave you more room for other uses on the porch. Flip up for use as tables or beds. Just a thought. Really a fan of your efforts. Never disappointed. 'Thanks.
Your video let me learn some wild knowledge. Thank you.
I follow you until France,, since few weeks! merci pour votre simplicité, votre courage et votre ingéniosité! votre cabane est super maintenant! elle est rustique mais très belle! bless for you and cali!!

I really don’t understand how anyone, can dislike this content. Living the dream Mr. James.
Always happy to see your notifications pop up my friend! Love the new porch ads massively to the dimensions and practically of the cabin 👍
Great clean up you look handsome!
I just cut my own hair last week for the first time and it actually turned out great. 22 dollars for a decent pair of clippers from the store, full kit with scissors and everything. So glad I took the risk, got tired of nobody cutting it the way I wanted.
I do like Shawn, give myself a Burr cut. Been doing it for about 4 years.
You are the best!!!!!!
Cali seems to love when u brush her :)
