I have been listening to Mc DET since 1993, and in all this time I have never heard him speak, so this interview was very refreshing. I heard with my own ears, the transition of sound between 94-95, from Jungle to DnB. DET you are a living Legend of the MIC, cannot wait to hear you grace the dance floors again.

This was a brilliant interview with Det. He was one of my favourite MCs alongside Navigator and Shabba. Det always had a very original recognisable, distinct voice and flow on the mic which in turn made the popular tracks of that time feel even better to the ears! And Big Up Brockie who has always been my goto DJ. Just brings back memories of Telepathy at Wax Club Stratford!!!

Brockie and Det still the ultimate jungle duo, smash it time after time. Legends in the game. Dets voice still reigns supreme in the jungle scene, him and Hyper best to do it 🔥Hyper was the Field Marshall, Det the General 👯 get a biography out man, that was sick listening.

Ron, loving these interviews, what a great idea hearing about the backgrounds of the original players.
I was there from the early days and followed the scene around, went to all the fevers, started to go to all the record shops, like black market, lucky spin, horice on the Camden market etc picking up tunes. And then got into producing, putting together a few akia samples, with a cracked copy of cubase on an atari 1040st and started cutting dubs at music house and the exchange.
The MC problem is my eyes was that some Mc's loved the sound of their own voice and wouldn't give the DJ space to mix and blend, However NOT all mc's some mc;s such as Det, Conrad knew when to stop and let the DJ do their thing.
Coming from a mixed race background - my mum was white and my step dad black, so grew up listening to reggae and loved the ragga vocals in the tunes, BUT sadly as time went on, there were so many up and coming producers just thinking they can slap a reggae sample half speed over an amen and pressing low quality tunes looking to make a quick buck. It just got silly.... then when the vocals stopped the tunes got very dark and moody and the scene changed in my eyes, as Det said no girls were going to the jams and they started to get a bad name.
Anyway now 50 im still loving the tunes (prefer the old skool stuff) but great to hear these podcasts from the pioneers of something that the UK should be proud off. Well done for putting this together! It's always been a London Ting :)
Please can we have; Brockie, Photek, Andy C, Dillinja, Bukem, Ray Keith, Doc Scott, Krust, Adam F, Nicky BM - also we need to hear your background and movement within the scene. :)

    Forever true to his brand.
And it has to be said, his message was always pure positive energy, even as the scenes other MCs went down a road of pure aggression, their lyrics portraying violent roadman mentality etc..
Met him in the Summer of 98.
If you think your boy is hench now, you should have seen him in day. Absolute wardrobe but the most chill man you'll ever come across.
Growing up in SW London, Brockie and Det on Kool was the first Pirate tape I'd ever heard outside of Don FM.
    I must've been 14, so 1995.
Second was Flirt, Shockin, Shabba, Skibz.. Legendary tape that I cannot find a copy of for love or money.

I’ve been a junglist from day dot. The day I met Ron @ a little event we were promoting in Medway back in the day was a special day for me. He has and will always be one of the greats…by far!
Even the day I noticed him in an advert for MTV, was a day I realised what the emotion “pride” was…even at a young age.

Someone needs to interview you, Ron!!! Furthermore, you should produce a documentary! I've still not seen an in depth or factual documentary about the history of the scene, from 86 - Jungle/D&B. Featuring those behind the first underground promotions, such as Clink St, Confusion, Ratpack, Jericho, Freedom, Fantastic Ibiza etc. Pioneering DJ's we don't hear from like Frankie Valentine, the Runtings Crew, Richie Fingers and of coarse the producers who created and shaped the sounds from Hardcore to Jungle like Shut Up and Dance, Dego & Marc Mac (Tom & Jerry), Potential Badbwoy etc etc

As is Mike West's transition from DJ/Promoter for his Beatfreak Soul Sound to Fantastic Ibiza DJ to Rebel MC to Conga Natty. So many names I could mention but the key aspect that is usually brushed over, partly inaccurate or biased, is the history of the music production.... When and who was first responsible for the use of breaks etc etc

I absolutely love videos like this, so many great stories from/about so many influencers in the scene, each one will recollect something a bit differently (and in Rons case with the meeting, not at all 😁 ) but in most I've seen the story/timeline of jungle to DnB seem to be on point, although I never realised about the raves changing to mostly men (I was 14 at the time) I'm guessing that was around 96 with early jump up (dope dragon era) through the intelligent/techy era until early 2001/2 when DnB was making a bit of a renaissance and garage was dying.
That part of Dets timeline seemed a bit out as jungle was gettinh locked down around 95 as said because of the moody ragga element bringing trouble to raves, garage in those days was mainly soulful bubbling stuff with the darker elements in speed garage and I don't recollect there being much trouble around that scene, If I remember correctly things changed for garage around 2000 with MC culture switching from hosting the night to lyrics promoting badness and the music following suit.
And also as another parallel with jungle the old guards of the scene held a meeting about what to do about the likes of so solid, heartless, PAYG etc.
Then that died and it moved to grime, rinse and repeat.
In a way it was a good thing that what happened happened and the movement had another direction to head in to keep the music relevant to allow it to come full circle again.

It seems MC Dets career and the MC game in general has been lot more precarious from than would seem from an outsider looking in point of view, and I guess that is what he has always had to fight for.
As a young teenager and with Kool FM being at its peak, the MC’s have always been at the front and center of that. To me the MC’s were just as important as the DJ and it was Jungle that did that. For a young ghetto yout I always regarded these guys as massively successful but I guess that was from my small London rave scene context. I guess there are broader contexts to be considered like Artistic success, Commercial success, Global success or something that bolsters you firmly into a long term career and constant work. Again in music, that can be a fight for anyone and I think MC has been a massive winner to achieve that.
What also can’t be denied is Det and all other Jungle MC’s part in helping along the British rap scene into the huge place in our culture it has today and the should forever get all the credit and recognition they deserve that.
On this Jungle Committee meeting, correct me if I’m wrong but I always thought the story went that Goldie stepped away from the Ragga Jungle sound first and was one of the main players with MetalHeadz to develop it into D&B and TechStep. Then after Jungles peak in 94-95 and UK Garage stealing the spotlight, all Jungle seemed to follow that into sounding like the Drum & Bass format. Of course eventually D&B would even look to Grime and Dubstep for influences in which the MC become even more important again. So another win for MC culture. Again it’s Jungle MC’s & guys like MC Det that we owe that debt.
Loving the Show DJ Ron, keep up the amazing work. 🤘🏼💜🔥😜👍🏼

Det is completely correct. The new found minimalism in the productions allowed the MC’s to breath over the music without vocals cluttering their rhymes.

Loving these videos, thank you Ron. I was maybe 10yrs old when I tuned into Kool FM randomly and got taken away by the music. The stories of these icons from my younger years are brilliant. Will you be doing a video telling us about your story? I would love it if you could. Much love :-)

Absolutely loving this DJ Ron. Loving his content in the question and loving what the guests have to say. By far this is the most interesting drum and bass talk show I've seen. I just haven't taken to the others. Mind you I'm more interested in the older DJs than the new so that might have something to do with it.
Really interesting what DET has to say I love his honesty!

The infamous "meeting" 😆Ron was not amused.
25:50 - 29:00 its interesting hearing about the politics going on at the time that influenced the sounds and scene. As a listener, it just felt like a natural progression until about 2000, when it felt completely different.
Ron you seem like a chill guy! Thank you for the output.
