- In this video I document the process I went through setting up my Honda Pilot to be used as a camper. This was one of the first projects I stared recording, so if things don't quite make sense please ask questions in the comments! I will answer them all!

Hey guys, Thanks for watching this video! But I wanted to let you know, I've sold my 2014 Honda Pilot, If anyone would like the wood framework pieces I built for the inside I'd be happy to give them to you if you are willing to drive to me. I live in NC, about the middle, Email Skippyrockgame@gmail.com if interested. I won't ask for or take money, so if some says something about a deposit, that's a scam. You don't get any electronics or cushions, because the electronics are being moved to another project and the cushion would just be gross!
Edit: the parts of been claimed!
I hope you are going to film any new build. Loved watching this one! Thank you
Hi! You wouldn't happen to have kept the plans, would you? Especially of thoes boards that required so many back and forth trips between the car and the work bench? Thanks!
@@gabrielcaron3413 unfortunately I didn’t not make plans. I kind of winged it as I went.
Wish you still had the parts. Yours was so well done!!
Coolest dad ever, especially with his music taste! Nice work!
This is the kind of amazing trip your kids will remember. They will remember seeing all this when they see it in a book in school. Great job on the SUV and they trip.
What a cool dad!
Thanks! I agree!
Very nice build!
I have a 2013 Pilot and did something similar, only I took out all the seats, and built the platform as low as possible, with hatches to access storage below. All-in-one battery/controller/inverter, fridge, pantry, etc. reside on top of platform next to sleeping position for 1 person.
My regrets: not putting a finish on the plywood, and not using separate components for the electrical.
That's awesome, my biggest constraint was setting it up so 3 people could ride around in it. I could make it a lot better now after having used it and if I was designing for just 2 (or 1).
Nice build! I have a 2011 Pilot Touring 4WD that I sleep out of whenever i work a camping music festival. I've had it like 3 yrs now and I love it. I just got back from Burning Man, it rained out there so the 4WD came in handy. I plan on doing a 2 inch lift and adding all terrain tires soon. My favorite addition so far was adding Apple CarPlay to the factory navigation via NavTool. I also bought a 12V refrigerator of Amazon that has been working great. That's about everything i'm doing to the Pilot, next up i'm converting a cargo trailer into a camper trailer just to have more room for comfort.
Pilots are great. I got mine new and put 155k miles on it. I've only ever had to do routine maintenance on it!
Did you encounter those STOP OIL protesters that had traffic blocked for miles & miles until they were arrested by tribal cops a few weeks ago?
Cool electronics! Going down that little cliff in that small offroad vehicle was something! What a trip!
It was a great trip. The off-road vehicle was on a trail called hells revenge in Moab. It was really fun. Saw some awesome built vehicles out there doing the trail as well. I'll probably end up re-purposing the solar setup for something else. I don't think I'll be a full time road warrior!
Awesome! I own a Pilot I plan to build out. This was very helpful! Thank you so much!
The only thing I didn’t like about my build was how hard it was to get in and out of the bed when it was in full bed mode. For a single person. It was actually perfect because you could have the bed halfway up and that back seat was a great place to sit and read.
@SkippyRockGame exactly what I was thinking. And I am a single traveler, so it's the best use of a Pilot's space I have seen! Plus I can't really rip out seats like I did in my Dodge Caravan. Especially the electric heated passenger seat.
Like your camper Honda and nice go to Yellowstone! Alot more great view on your video!
I have a 2016 Pilot I’m thinking of converting. Thank you for this - I hadn’t found many other videos showing what the floor looks like after removing the seats! This will help me decide if I want to tackle the conversion. Nicely done! Happy trails!
Good luck! I think the 2016 is the model after mine. Should have more room!
I have 2015. Thinking about the same thing.
Great job, Ive
Got a 2016 pilot, Didn't do the extreme you did, which is awesome by the way. IM using a portable power station rather than batts. Love your build, and your personality!!!
Thanks for watching and the comment! I would have just done a power station, but I had bought the panels and battery to try and do a setup in my backyard for like a garden watering station. Then this trip idea came up and I could justify it by saying I didn't have to buy a power station!
I originally came for the project but stayed for the personality. Dude you’re awesome. Like textbook dad sarcasm too! “Hopefully I’m cutting through the seal so next time it rains it’ll pour water” 😂😂😂 something I would’ve said too. Your fabrication skills are on point too. I’m subbing man.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and the humor! In my later videos I did get a mic so my random comments get picked up better, I've got a lot of things to say, and the world needs to hear me!
@@SkippyRockGame I’m here for it. I just realized you’re in NC what part? I’m in SC
right in the middle, Near Winston Salem, tobacco country!@@zackparler8915
I just really want to see a tour of the camper van build out please
I never did have a good walk around of the camper all together. The trip was kind of hectic and it was one of the first projects I started recording for UA-cam (even though it's one of my later videos) so I didn't get all of the shots I should have. Let me see if I can put together a short or something of a walk around of the project.
Ok. So the best footage I have of the build is in the video. Go to 35.56-36.43. That shows the build in sleeping mode and travel mode.
Skippy, Thanks for replying to this comment. The clip you referenced makes the layout clear. Really nice job!
It's no coincidence that after that routered notch fiasco at 18:30, the next thing you see is a picture of Homer Simpson ROFL.
Nice work in all seriousness, I aspire to be 1/2 as good at this stuff as you are.
Sometimes doing these projects I feel like home trying to build a spice rack!
Nice build! I’m thinking to get a Pilot and do something similar. Thanks for all the details of dissection!!
I looked at other vehicles that had more room, but I got my pilot new in 2014 and it has never given me any issues. So I stuck with what I knew would make the 5000 mile journey!
Great video, useful examples, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Love your build! Thanks for detailing the solar setup. I hadn’t thought of running the power wire through the Sirius antenna mount. Great idea! Is it still waterproof?
I didn't trust my plate and those wire gaskets to be water proof so I ended up covering the entire thing in silicone. So far I've had no issues with leaking.
i have a 2015 Pilot and am really considering converting! I was wondering what gas mileage you get or any tips on getting better mileage? Thanks! 😅
Average MPG was around 19mpg on the trip. Usually I get closer to 21. The thing that hurt the gas mileage the most on the trip was the speed limits! The speed limit once I got to kanas was 80. You definitely get better gas mileage around 60-65
how tall are you? im 6feet tall and i’m thinking about doing this in a honda pilot. did you have enough room to lay flat ?
I'm 6'4". So I set this up so my driver seating position (basically all the way back) did not have to change. I could lay flat with the top of my head touching the back of the driver seat and the flat of my feet would be an inch from the rear glass.
PS : The "Off Gassing" from the "bed liner" coating in NOT meant for "interior" use !! It can be very "toxic" to humans, animals .....
I used to work for a company that Applied it to New Truck beds for dealerships ..... We had to suit up wear special respirators to work with it ....
Well crap. Is it ok after it cures? Or is it always going to off gas?
I looked it up. It looks like the truck bed liners in a can like I used do not contain the chemical that the professional ones use, like rhino line. As long as this stuff cures it's fine. It was several weeks between application and use.
I don't understand the point of putting the solar panel in the basket. Seems like a waste of space and weight.
The basket was the easiest way to mount the panel to the roof. I guess I could have just attached the panel straight to the cross bars. But this protected the panel and gave me a little extra room for storage. A smaller panel would have been better and worked just fine for the amount of energy I needed. But I had this panel i had bought for another project.
I'm not saying this is a bad build. Quite the contrary. He did a great job. However, nobody's gonna do all this extra work. Especially the electrical portion, FTN. I've seen many impressive builds. This one is overkill. I mean, are you gonna live full-time in that thing?
Thanks for watching! The build worked great for the trip.
All I did was fold all my rear seats, throw in a trifold mattress, fleece blanket, a 12v Cooler and a 720 EcoFlow powerstation and my camping gear, with laptop and done.
Not a single tool necessary.
My philosophy is to keep it simple, stupid.
Nice, I wanted the build so I could drive around 3 people and carry stuff for 3 people and have easy access along the way!
