Mourvèdre is also becoming popular in Texas! The William Chris Mourvèdre is the best wine I've tried in the entire state.

Some of the best examples of Mourvèdre have been from Paso Robles, CA., both as a single varietal and in blends. When done right, Mourvèdre makes a stellar wine.

D Filice - Yes! There are a couple of wineries in the Central Coast that do a stunning job on the Mourvèdre. Koehler is one.

We had a Jumilla wine with dinner last night and watched this video to understand more about the varietal. We really enjoyed the wine, and I appreciate the varietal more after watching your video. (I love all of your videos, by the way!)

I recently ran across this grape variety as I was browsing the wine section. I naturally had a ton of questions and your video answers a lot of those questions.
Thank you for bringing this into perspective.

Great posts! Looking forward to trying a “mostly Mourvèdre” soon. I’ll see if I can find the domaine tempier by me. Is the 2008 the one I should look for or could I go for a 2014 or 2012.🍷🍷🍷

Curious about the oak treatment comment. "it doesn't take on oak characteristics as easily as other varieties do, so it usually goes into neutral oak."
If a grape is shy about taking on flavor from oak, then I would think then that a winemaker would have no reservations about putting the wine in new oak. It also seems logical to me that a wine that is high alcohol, high tannin would benefit and soften from harder oak treatment.

Hello. The point I meant to make, which I could have stated better, is that Mourvèdre generally isn’t judged to play well or easily with oak flavors - much the way that Riesling isn’t, either, say. So, producers tend to shy away from new oak. With reference to the second point you raised, what softens tannins is controlled exposure to oxygen and that can be achieved in neutral oak - new oak won’t contribute anything to that process. Likewise, alcohol is unaffected by oak treatment. Thanks for the question and I hope that’s helpful. Cheers!

Could you cover blaufränkisch in a future podcast? I am particularly interested in comparison between old world and new world.
