- I end up buying a very cheap Honda 400ex quad and then installing the cheapest 440cc big bore kit onto it for testing purposes. I attempt to start it for the first time. Will it run? #Honda, #Test, #BigBore,

Thank you for all the support!
it shuts off because it got a higher compression ratio nothing to worry about only change the jets to higher ones
Hey man love the builds and the vids but what happened to the wooden dirt bike build? I really want to see it done.
Hi 2 Vintage !! Man im search a original Headlampmask with Light in it for a Honda XR 600 from 1995 . Im a grat Fan to your Vids Man !! My Xr is a European Model with the big Qwadratic Headlight, i will the optic from the Us Type. Hope you have a Link or something else Sir?? God bless America !!
Bigger Jet's and aftermarket exhaust
Put the some cylinder on mine but I didn't use the piston that came with. I put a 12-1 compression piston in it. Also got a head, valve and cam chain all the same brand. Runs amazing. It's been a year now no issues. It works great at Glamis. Also put a 16 tooth sprocket in the front and a 38 tooth in the back.
Literally knew nothing about quad motors a year ago and now Ive rebuilt 3 of them all because of this channel 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
It’s very easy
Hands on experience is the best , trial and error
I’m on #2 😅
Man, it amazes me every time, how well a seat cover can clean up a bike. You could just staple a sheet of vinyl on one and it can change the whole look of the project. Great content.
Yes I agree, makes a huge difference
yea, ripped seat cover is one of the first things ya see, nice new one looks great.
Hello Joe, long time viewer here. I've never commented on your videos actually but I just wanted to say that your channel is a DIY paradise. I've learned and learned so much about watching your videos the past few years. I'm mechanically competent but at the same time I don't have much confidence taking jobs on my own machines sometimes especially engines. That said, over the years, watching you tearing down engines and fixing stuff finally got me started on rebuilding my old big red 250es that has been sitting for 20+ years. I found out that the oil pump blew and fried the head. With all your knowledge and tips, I managed to find a complete used head and top end kit and rebuilded it myself, and now my old ATC runs again. I also do plan on rebuilding my brother's ktm 150sx top end sometime this winter. Again, thank you for the time you put in these videos. It helps people more than you can imagine.
Cheers.
That's awesome to hear! Nothing more satisfying than hearing your machine start up for the first time after rebuilding it! Keep it up!
I really enjoy watching you bring back a old quad. You always try to keep the cost down which shows us what others could do. Like your videos, keep them coming.
It sounds pretty healthy for the most part. Proper jetting and continue break in it may just get better. I still suggest a couple oil changes during and after break in. The oil filter will tell you how well it's going... Or not lol good job Joe !
Sounds great bud, i bet it holds together because you checked the ring gap, most get these kits and just stick it together and dont check that and they blow up after an hr and blaime the cheap kit, nothing is more fun then scoring a cheap quad and getting it running for super cheap, another great video .
Looks so much better with all the plastic and new seat cover. Sounds good.
With a bore kit, run a size larger on the mainjet for starters and raise the needle one notch.
Great build video. Yes I think that a larger pilot jet will help with the fuel delivery. Looking forward to seeing more on this project. Hope your investment pays off and this big bore is worth the price. Would like to see you trick it out with a cam and full exhaust system. Thanks again for your time and videos. Enjoy the rest of your week.
I feel like giving it a good clean and detail .
I've been running the std bore ebay kit since early this past spring, so far so good
I don’t understand how a seat cover changes a bike so much. It changed mine a ton and my seat was just fine
I’ve been waiting for this video
Sounds smooth, you did a good job building her back up bud
ive been waiting for this video for like 5 days. i just subscribed last week and llove the content
Thanks for watching!
Yeah someone suggested raising the needle in the carb that should get rid of the bogging just above idle making the mixture a little richer
Motor sounds great, exhaust needs that end cap bad.
A lot of hard work in this channal ! Keep it up man ! I love every video ! Especially the vintage 2 strokes ! Keep it up boy ! :)
Awesome video! So nice to see you finally working on a bench and not the dirty ass ground!
Try installing the air box air filter lid,,,,because on polaris they are prone to sputter on throttle,,and bad idling if that lid is not installed ,,,,hope it helps,,,,keep up the good work,,,great videos 👍
My dad has an xr 400 we are going to do a top end on, this video should help 👍
You did a good job of this one man👍
I've used the Niche top end parts on my 2005 Yamaha Grizzly 660 with no issues
I bet it blew up due to being lean since it had no exhaust end cap. I would find a slip on. The jetting specs from the HMF exhaust website should be pretty close. Around 160 main if running the airbox lid and 175-180 if no airbox lid. 42 pilot. Often times with just a big bore kit and no other supporting mods jetting is actually the same or leaner, bigger bores pull more vacuum which actually pulls more fuel through the same size jet.
Great video!
Fav moto channel
Looking good joe great job on the build mate first ride on it will tell if all is good otherwise looks great 🔧🔧👍👌
You did a good job keep up the good wood
When you pour the battery acid in you can pierce a hole in the top of those bottles and it drains alot faster
If you take a little PB blaster or WD-40 and run it around the inside of the air boot it will slip right on your carburetor nice and easy peasy
Sounds good, add some octane boost to gas. Break er in easy... great job, Joe.
That things sick!
Brand new top and and first thing he does is rev it over and over. This guy
I don’t know about other machines but on partzilla and Rocky Mountain you can get brand new Honda plastics and seats which is usually cheaper than used stuff
Once you ride it...and you get the jetting good, Redline 15w50 motorcycle oil or even Amsoil will pay for itself...they are the most heat Resistant and the highest film strength...take it out to your parents and run it...a fuzz rich won't hurt.
I’d love to see you get all the previous owners stickers off of all these as you go. It’d clean up the look of these bikes so much. Any time I see a monster energy decal on a machine I automatically assume it got the once every five years maintenance schedule lol.
You're right front tire should be looked at replacing
That’s gonna blow up for sure .
Nope 👎
nice i really like this one
Great video
Awesome vid and edits and filming and bikes and shop and tools and knowledge
yay upload
Get a plastic welder stapler kit. That'll help with plastic repairs. Saved my bacon a bunch of times. Repairs old plastics and keeps it running. I don't mind old OEM plastics.
and by the Way. a aircooled Big Honda one Cylinder wiil do some of rough Noise .cause its rallyy good workin Machine for itself
I think you should get a cheap header and exhaust also since it’s a big bore give it more flow to keep from over heating
I would love to have those bars on my 400
New plastic, new seat ,new battery.. it better friggin start!
Final touch should be to get those nerf bars off and throw them in the trash!!!!
Work*
Should've left front plastics off, could've pulled plug and put a bore scope down it to see how pist and jug look.
Man, I’ve watched your videos for a while. Good stuff. I think I would’ve upgraded my head studs going to a big bore cylinder, also a big bore needs more airflow. Which means you should get a new exhaust with better flow. A cheap full exhaust option is resonant racing. I prefer HMF myself.
Just watching the video, I know it's old but you hooked the positive lead to the negative terminal on the battery. Maybe you switched the wires I don't know what you did off camera, but red is positive and black is negative usually.
440 is 10% bigger displacement so can’t u just add 10% bigger jet =162.5 for a rough estimate? Awsome channel
Do you check the vins when you buy these and were do you search them?
What seat cover is that and where did you get if from
good stuff, but you go through the work of taking these quads/bikes apart and then put them back together, but is there a reason why you don't clean them while you have them apart?
Those really are some pretty nice replacement panels not bad. Did you get the plastic welder yet? Never heard an exhaust like that before? the thing is a 440 pretty big I guess. If its any thing like a MOPAR 440 it will be pretty bad ass.
Can you make a video about all the tools you use to fix quads and dirty bikes
Power tools and hand tools
Just use a pair of multi grip pliers for everything, works well for Joe !
I was thinking the same thing. I would love to see a tool box tour video.
Honestly, looks like all he uses is the Autojare impact wrench, and the Crescent 170 piece tool set. Occasionally you’ll see him using a 18v Bosch drill. Most of his specialty tools like flywheel puller and crank splitter are all Tusk brand suited to brand or model of whatever he’s working on. Then odds and ends whenever he doesn’t have a correct size socket or something. But between that impact wrench and that crescent set, it covers 90%+ of everything he does.
@@lanceh.8537 He uses pliers to remove spark plugs 😅
@@wisecampmotorcycles8258 which that crescent set comes with lol
From what iv been told over couple of years now and from what I have read most important is wall to piston clearance, ring clearance and with 2 stroke oil ratio. Obviously you should never get China parts but since your doing it for informational purposes then I guess it's okay. I just wouldnt wanna risk anything going into the bottom end
Ring and piston/wall clearance is just as important. Both could lead to catastrophic failure either way if not measured and inspected properly.
Are you self-taught my brother at doing this kind of stuff or Or did someone have you under their wing teaching you Because you’re pretty fucking slick at what you do you do a great job
Home-made, self-made nerf bars might be ticking against the frame.
idle sound a bit high. other than that a great runner.
I really like to know how long this kit is gonna last I have read so many different reviews on this particular big bore kit, I hope it last for you.
Straight pipe it! You will be amazed!
You should really get a pipe and a stage to cam for it
What do you think about the Niche kits stock bore
Spray the nerf bars black or yellow get rid of the red
How was the durability on this kit? Still running?
I like the 440 but I don’t like them because they have overheating problems when they are a 440 that is why I like 426 and I spent $40 on my side plastics I order mine from GDH racing
Agreed . I have a 426 and it's great low end and heat isn't bad at all.
@@Sum-wk5li yeah I’m thinking about a 426 my uncle told me don’t do a 440 because he tested it and it heats up way too fast
Cool
Believe it or not those 440 kits last longer with the stock pipe
I’ve seen people run race fuel on a stock engine and the pistons looked like yours afterwards
You’ll just loose power if you use too high of an octane rating. But you can run like 94 octane VP fuel or mix a small amount of higher octane (like 100+) with pump fuel to get about that octane and see some improvements to throttle response. But anything over 95 in these machines and even most stock 250s and 450s won’t lead to any benefits at all.
If everything turns out to run fine with it you should get a CFM Performance aluminum airbox for it. They relocate all of your electric components to inside your airbox. Keeps everything safe and dry. I really hate the 400ex's stock battery location
I think it’s time for another Trx450r
Was the gas off? Though i saw the gas valve off
Love your channel wish I lived close to you so you could rebuild my ltz400 top end with stage 2 hot cams
How do you get these bikes you fix I can’t find crap
You make good money with these things ? I just bought a 125cc for $50 that look like crap but I wanna fix it up
It's smoking so I might have to tighten up a few bolts lol
@Whoop!
I am currently restoring a 1975 Yamaha DT 125 Enduro. The seat is super crappy and the foam is eaten up, replacement phones are 100 bucks
Wondering if anyone had any cheaper solutions thanks
clean the stuff before putting it back together. will make it look soooooo much nicer man
your gonna have to hang a heater in the garage so ya dont frezze this winter
How much did the 400ex cost?
Hey, anytime you need one of those seat covers warmed up in the winter time feel free to ship it to me here in AZ. I’ll set it outside for the day in the hot sun and ship it back to you overnight. JK 😉🤪
Do u have the end off your other ex u could use on this exhaust I hate when people take them off they make a weird sound Like the exhaust is hitting that lip and sounds stupid Looks good tho I curious to see how long it last
Is that what that dubious sound was that Jo seemed to be also aware of?
Hey man I dm’d you about breaking in a piston how do I ?
She sounds snappy and like a nice thumper .
why don't u set the throttle instead of surging it all the time. strange thing to do . we don't do that over here
good job
Someone Please help I have a 2005 400EX with the 440 big bore Ive got two problems one is when I put in 1.9 Quarts of oil it dont read on the dip stick at all I let it idle for 5 Min then set for 3 Min then check it don't touch the dip stick its dry, the only way is I have to put in 3 1/2 or more Quarts of oil to get it to read. then I have alot of blow by out the breather tube that gos to the air box Please help anyone it runs strong its a Wisco piston rings and jug 440 kit dont smoke at all what the problem?
Any idea why my 400ex fowls plugs? Jetting we have messed with as well as replace valve seals, my thought maybe piston rings.. but the machine has super low hours and it sat for 10 years.. i replaced carb from one on amazon seems to be working ok.. i live in arizona around 2400 ft above sea level.. fuel mixture screw is about 2 1/4 turns out.. at my elevation should it be less turns out for less fuel? Tried all kinds of different jetting in carb.. without getting rid of the carbon plug.. piston has good compression
Does your quad smoke at all?
@@2vintage
No white or blue smoke.. if you rev high you can see carbon or black smoke alittle but not really noticeable unless u are looking for it… piston rings? Oil rings?
Whats your thoughts? I need help
Yeeww
Sounds like a bag of nails. Might be a loose or worn cam chain maybe? And definitely change the exhuast to a hmf slip on
Yep, always change the timing chain on a rebuild. Bought a dirt bike that was “rebuilt” turns out they reused the timing chain. It lasted about 4 hours then let go….. bent valves, smacked the head…..$$$$
Have you ever cleaned a single carb BEFORE opening it and working on the inside. The amount of dirt on them is ridiculous..
I have had old-timers tell me break the bike in the way you’re going to ride it never know if it was true or not
👍👍👍👍
Might wanna check the accelerator circuit and get the right jets. But I'm sure ur already on it...lol. I know u adjusted the valves but random popping and stall could be in valve train.
Shoulda bought a guts racing seat cover for like the same price, you could’ve designed it yourself, AND they’re the grippiest covers like ever!
I picked the one with the fastest shipping
@@2vintage guts is actually really quick..no wait time hardly at all
@@jbj198840 that's good to know! I'll look into that for next time!
