May actually was NOT the girl who nodded when Denzel mentions the 2,000 denarii. But she was in the background of the scene when Lucius fights the baboon and when he fights the dude at a party in front of the emperors. I’m really hoping to see the 4 hour cut of this film one day cuz I agree with yall about how the scene with Denzel and Connie felt super chopped up and overall I had moments where I thought “Am I missing something?” Overall I liked the movie but I can see why some ppl are attacking this movie. I hope to see a 4 hour cut of this film. Keep up the great work as always, bros 🎉
I really enjoyed this - Was it as good as the original? No. But Gladiator set a very high bar. It was basically the same movie again, but with bigger/more fights. The baboons looked really dodgy, but the rest of the CGI was pretty well done and a nice mix of CGI and practical effects/sets. For those moaning about the accents, the historical accuracy, blah,blah,blah-It’s a movie ffs, not a documentary-Get a grip. I thought all the performances were great. And whilst Ridley Scott may not be the director he once was, he can still run rings round most other directors working today.
My only flaw with the script his the fact that he leaves seconds after the events of the first film. I think maybe making it a year later maybe the twins arrive and he’s forced to leave at that point. Directly after the events of gladiator feels a bit weird but other than taht I’ll give the film a 8/10.
Boys, sorry but this film wasn't good! how could they let the CGI be so bad, people were laughing out loud in my cinema, and having him fight a 70 year old at the ending was a terrible way to finish the film. 4\10
they could have used an Italian accent & STILL be understood in fact like in THE GOD FATHER there were no Italian actors in major roles BUT it still worked (Connie Neilson is Scandinavian...Norwegion I think)
While Macrinus was born in North Africa, he was of Roman descent leading to a misconception that he was what we consider black today (sub-Saharan) when in reality he was probably just tan skinned. Just a history correction, I don’t care one way or the other in terms of the accuracy in the movie, Denzel was incredible
Sorry I have to inform you that your comment is not incorrect but incomplete as you did note that he was likely tanned. According to historians research and historical accounts of Macrinus. Obviously neither I nor you was around 196AD, so neither of us can say with 100 percent certainty pertaining to his skin tone. Though according to historical records Marcus Opellius Macrinus was of Berber descent, born in Caesarea (now called Cherchell, in modern Algeria), in the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis to an equestrian family of Berber origins. The Berbers are a diverse grouping of distinct ethnic groups indigenous to North Africa. It’s a near certainty that his skin complexion would have been a brownish to lower dark brown shade of tone. Similar to modern day Algerians or Egyptians. Also to say “of Roman descent” is a misleading flawed interpretation and representation of Ancient Rome. Our modern interpretation of Roman descent for the majority of people is Caucasian in nature. Though depending on the timeline of Ancient Rome, there is a wide variety of skin tones from light skin all the way up to dark skin citizens of the Roman Empire. Due to the massive borders of the Roman Empire, there are hundreds of unique cultures and regions that are populated with a wide range of diverse ethnic groups that are citizens of Rome. Though the terminology “of Roman descent” isn’t factually incorrect it is fundamentally flawed because it is fundamentally unspecific due to the myriad of cultural differences between the Roman population. It could for example refer to Egyptian Romans or Northern Africa Romans or Eastern European Romans or Romans of Brittanica, Gaul and many others. I think you get the idea, I totally agree with your sentiment that it doesn’t matter what skin tone Macrinus was. But if misinformation isn’t corrected, then misinformation spreads to infect numerous other people and grows like a wildfire. The people it infects are usually uneducated (not as a whole, but on the specific topic that is involved) and gets parroted as factual, when in reality it’s flawed. So don’t take this correction the wrong way, I’m not doing it to shame you or feel superior out of being more informed on the subject or any political/ ideological agenda. My only two objectives is to give constructive information pertaining to a scientific basis of research, analysis and data. My other agenda is to inform the wide array of dumb arses who get on UA-cam and other social media platforms and complain about having Denzel Washington being cast in GLADIATOR II because his black. What these imbeciles don’t grasp it is factually 100% a reality that people who we term as black today, would exist in Rome the city and throughout the Empire. So due to their ignorance and lack of knowledge they are spreading falsehoods that are the exact opposite of the historical reality. You would think that if you are going to spew your flawed rhetoric on podcasts and reviews, that at a minimum do a bit of research and reading on the subject matter.
Apologies for my first comment, I stated that your original post was incorrect. It was indeed a good representation of Macrinus as you did write “he was most likely tanned”. I have edited my comment to correct my mistake and apologise for the error. Sorry bro and all the best. ✌🏼
It did what it needed to do. It continues the story but does something completely different. I could’ve used more scenes of Pedro’s character. A lot more. It’s funny I said to myself. How will they possibly get me to hate predro pascal? And they did the opposite and made me love his character which is what I was hoping for
GLADIATOR II was a top tier spectacular epic film that stands on its own as a historical masterpiece. First time I saw the movie, I thought it was very good and scored it a 8. But whilst watching the film I kept on comparing the original to its sequel, which is natural for a sequel of a modern classic. Obviously it’s near impossible to surpass the original Gladiator due to be one of the greatest movies of all time. On the second viewing I consciously wiped the original from my memory and just watched with the intention of experiencing Gladiator II in a vacuum, as if the original didn’t exist. That is the way to perceive the universe as if your seeing Gladiators Rome for the first time. Now I think it is an amazing sequel, worthy of the Gladiator legacy. 8.5 half a point less than the original. One of my favourite movies ever, original had more heart. The sequel action sequences are on par with the first or even slightly better in some action scenes. Ridley Scott has just left me in awe, his directing at this level at his age is legendary. Second time I saw it, I noticed Ridley puts the film through a filter of dust, dirt and a grimy foreground. That aesthetic provides so much depth, detail, texture and realism. So much so you feel like if you went back in time to visit Ancient Rome, it would look similar to what Ridley puts on film.
Unpopular opinion but I think Pedro Pascal gives the best performance in this movie and he should be the one with Oscar buzz around him instead of Denzel. I can't tell if Mescal was miscast or if Luscious is just not developed enough. And I think the 3rd act is honestly weak. Not just weak in comparison to the first gladiator. Just weak in general. Still a fun a watch though. Solid 7/10 for me.
I was very excited for this film and it did not disappoint so glad to hear you boys liked it as well. While not as high as the original but still amazing picture.
Saw it yesterday, really enjoyed it! Especially loved watching Denzel eat up every bit of scene he appeared in, such a fitting end to his character. The syphilis bit was also a cool detail, and I don't agree with some critics saying it was a copy of the first film at all! If anything Paul Mescal may have been slightly overshadowed by what Gladiator 2001 did for Crowes's career, and the legacy of Maximus. Still a worthy sequel, and Ridley still has it! #Unsubscribe because I also can't say Geta's brothers name😂
So, Idk if I'm biased towards liking the movie because I watched it on this huge IMAX planetary dome here in Charlotte, but I don't understand how anyone could say it's an objectively bad movie. It's obviously not as good as the first for several reasons, but it's not a bad movie. Matrix Reloaded is not considered to be as good as the Matrix, but it was awesome and fun to have there be a continuation of that world, same thing with Gladiator II for me. I also think when a sequel to a much beloved movie comes out 24 years later ppl will just be primed to dislike it
After I realized this movie was almost shot for shot of the first one, I had to turn off my brain and just had to enjoy it then I found myself loving Pedro of course, Denzel of course, it was a good film to watch!
I commend you for having the guts to praise this sequel film, instead of the usual whining about it being nothing more than a thinly disguised remake(as is so often said about other film sequels to) yes there are similarities, but going by the trailers they have been honest about that, there ARE differences this time from & I think but for the better generally. I don't understand the huge wait 25yrs probably it should have been made earlier, but that hasnt lessened the film any, what many of the nay sayer's may have missed is that they are making a point about how Maximus spirit lives on through his son destiny, re-encarnation (one of the the things that sets the original GLADIATOR apart f-rom the older Roman epics - SPARTACUS, FALL OF ROMAN EMPIRE etc
Comparing this to Dune Two may be the hottest take from this podcast this year. Paul was amazing in this , Denzel was good too. Connie was soooooo bad , I don’t know if it was her writing or her acting or both, but it almost took me out of the movie how poorly executed her character was.
Yes. Whitey (Rome) are aggressors for no other reason than to colonize. Women fight. Husbands are cucked. Emperors are raceswapped. Masculinity is stripped.

If you just see them as two separate things representing two different eras, you’ll sleep fine at night.
Yup lol
I’m glad they didn’t go with the whole resurrection and time travelling stuff can you imagine lol

THANK YOU! I can’t wait to show Anthony a screenshot
Denzel stole and ate up every scene he was in. His Machiavellian-like performance kept me engaged and elevated the film for me. Solid 7.8/10.
He only succedded because others were irrationally dumb

It followed of lot of similar beats from the original, but needless to say, I answered Maximus’ question, I was entertained! ⚔️
We agree! Definitely worth the watch!
Unpopular opinion here: Denzel's role just wasn't it for me and i felt like this movie was rushed. Still a great film, but really underwhelmed.
