I'm thinking of scanning and printing some cardstock for a "travel version". But I have the Emperor Version and it's freaking amazing. I just signed up for the expansion and am adding the playmat which I regret not getting the first time around.
This is the first review I’ve seen where anyone said it was better than “I really like it,” so I think it’s definitely worth it for Dan. Every other review is 80% about the production, and 20% about how it’s fairly to quite good as a game
It has an avg rating of over 8 on BGG which is really good. I think it's going to be Stephen Buonore's Podfather) favorite game of the year. Everyone I've played it with loves it and shelled out top dollar for it.
I backed the emperor edition and got it a month ago. Played a 2 player game and liked the grande look and feel of the game. My only complaint is with the scoring after each Era. Just for 2 player game..it was overwhelming and wish there was some app to do the scoring for us and make the game much faster.
the SIZE, price, depth-to-complexity and deluxification remind me of everdell complete and CoB special edition. Those seem to be a staple, must-have favorite. FoRome skipped the line and the waiting and went all-in with production. They all play differently but How would you rank them ?
I do love the look of this one. But the cost prevented me from getting it. If they would do a cost friendly version with tiles that are pretty artwork I would buy it in a heartbeat!
And the prices At the Kickstarter are way cheaper than they are now if you buy it off their website! I bet they’ll come out with a cost friendly version.
I would've brought this with support for less players, maybe 2 or 3 players. Saving money on the additional plastic buildings which will probably be never used, as I don't have 4 or 5 players to play with.
It is WAY over produced for what it is. He is wrong about game of the year, it's not game of the year unless it's the only played he has played. They are many tile layers way easier to table and are just as enjoyable. Sure the buildings look cool but tiles would have been more functional, lighter to carry to a game night and less fiddly on the table. AW has said there will be a not plastic version with a different them coming at some point so just wait for that. It will also not cost so much for what it is - a low complexity tile layer.
This might be a great game, but too many people won’t have the opportunity to play it because it IS overproduced. A small box retail version easily could’ve been made without disappointing those who opted for the massive kickstart version. But for whatever reason, Arcane Wonders wanted to make this a luxury product that is out of reach for a huge swath of potential gamers. Hobby gaming is already niche enough.
CTG do this and it works well 🤪. Big price for 20 years isn t that much. It really depends if you are a ever buying board game person or of you want 1 or 2 for each kind/theme/mechanics you like. I sell my games to keep max 30 and most of the time at the price I payed so I dont really care buying $$$ game. 😅 And this game by his component, will stay nice for a long time. And if you have kids or non gamer you will have a game to get them into the hobby and therefore maybe make them get into other more heavy games 😇
Funny you should ask! As soon as I played with the negotiation variant the first thing I said was…this reminds me of Lord of Vegas! It’s not purely open negotiations like those, but it does give a bit of that feel especially with the grid and what you’re trying to do. But definitely feels like a different game for sure.
thanks dan for all the hard work you have done
You’re welcome Ahmed and thanks for watching!
Or maybe a version with Azul style tiles would make it a little more premium feeling than a Walmart game but still look impressive on the table.

This is a FANTASTIC Game! We are loving it. So glad I got it.

The Temple of Vulcan is commercial on the card but the color is civic. Also the wash brings out the details on the minis.

I like Foundations of Rome best, then Castles of Burgundy (that I also really like). Everdell I don’t like as much.

It'might be great if they use tiles instead. It is very difficult to carry because of its size and weight.
The game is huge. What did you get rid of to make room for it?
This one has to fit on the very top of the shelves so it got a special place :)

How does this compare to Lords of Vegas or Chinatown?
