I think Gascoignes theme is perfection. Not only because it sounds great, but it perfectly represents the fight. The first phase has a deep powerful tone that has a seriousness that can't be mistaken. This is a hunter. But then it suddenly changes, becoming slightly horrifying as the beast inside emerges. It devolves from there into an aggressive fast paced soundtrack as the new hunter fights for their life against a feral beast that once was a proud hunter.
Kinda like when the third Mantis Lord also stands up during the second phase of Pantheon 5 "Mantis Lords" fight and it turns into the Sisters of Battle fight then the music kicks in.
Late reply, but check out Gustav Holst's _Mars, Bringer of War_ . The part at 4:24 is sure to fling some heads. m.ua-cam.com/video/L0bcRCCg01I/v-deo.html
Well he has a big health bar, a name, harder to kill than your average enemy, and a special theme only shared with a boss encountered slightly later. For me, that defines a boss.
Calling him Father Gascoigne was brilliant. The game throws you a red herring that Gascoigne comes from a distant land, since Father isn't a term granted to church members. Of course, you realize he is indeed a father of a young girl, and when he hears you play the music box that once belonged to her, he actually staggers. Damn From, you just broke my heart with a little play on words.
In any other game, that music box would be a scripted event that plays a cutscene that makes Gascoigne angry, that would be lame but this is a FromSoft game, they put effort into making an awesome experience without that "trying to be like a movie" bullshit
+PeteSabacker "Father" is also a term used for priests in the English language, I think what he meant is that the game's "Healing Church" group doesn't give the title Father because the descriptions of his clothes say "'Father' is a title used for clerics in a foreign land, and there is no such rank in the Healing Church."
This theme perfectly illustrates how Gascoigne is slowly being consumed by sent of blood and lust of the hunt. The pacing of the music increases like a mad mans heart rate, it becomes more sinister as if an inhuman force is taking over. He embraces the turn to beasthood...all for the hunt.
@@watertommyzthere's a fan theory that the beasts killed her while he was on the hunt and that hate for his wife being killed fueled his bloodlust sending him into a rage killing everyone there to avenge his wife... Then you walk in as he's chopping away to fill a void

The game is, and I quote, teaching you how to really enjoy a souls game the first few games teach you how not to, hiding behind a sheild and going for all out protection and damage, when in reality you want a good DPS and the ability to avoid enemy attacks Go back to the other games with Bloodborne's message in mind
Playing all souls games before bloodborne really made it hard to defeat him of Cleric Beast. I was used to slow methodical style of boss fights. In BB you have to be aggressive. When my brother tried the game (no souls experience at all) he 2 shotted Cleric Beast. Feels bad man.
Honestly? Yes. He's a good "tutorial" on how the game should be approached: be aggressive and you'll be rewarded, be a coward and you'll get mawled to death.
@@skeletonjam I disagree, cleric beast for new players is just a big monster like ones you would find in another souls game, and so it discourages trying a new approach.
When Father Gascoigne stood up and said “It’s Bloodin Time” before the fight, I broke into tears! Truly the video game of all time! (serious this game is a masterpiece I’m on my first playthrough and I love it)
This theme is actually one of the main themes of the game and I believe was used in one of the trailers. It’s not just Gascoigne’s theme but the theme of the hunters. Your theme.
This sound track conveys the feeling of the fight: You, a complete newcomer to Yharnam and the hunting business is about to go up against a true veteran hunter who's completely lost it. And you don't stand a chance.
Indeed everyone probably banged their head against him for a while until he died. I know i struggled a ton on him. But in the end, i respawned and he didnt.
Gascoigne, have a Snickers. "Why?" You're not you when you thirst for chocolate caramel nougat. "Oooh it sings to me." *bites the snickers and turns back to human form* Better? "Better."
Bloodborne's bosses are aggressive and require you to play aggressively. Gascoigne is a lot easier when you realize dodging at him is safer than trying to distance yourself from him.
I remember beating bloodborne first and jumping straight into Dark Souls III after, it was like hitting a wall at 200mph. Going back to defensive play, keeping a distance, wait for a chance to land hits was really hard for me.
Bloodborne is my 1st game that I ever played from Fromsoftware I really wanted to try out one of the games before buying Dark Souls Remastered on the Switch (just the soundtrack alone made me want to get the game) I soon discovered that my older brother had gotten this game (I think from PS4 membership thingy) and I started playing it 2 days ago and I already fell in love with the game after karate chopping that stupid wolf in the beginning it took me almost an hour to beat it but I felt satisfied that I slayed it, I still don't get how I managed to get to Gascoigne 1st before the Cleric Beast but I ultimately died when I left him at a quarter health but that mistake was BEST mistake because I was finally able to level up my stats YAY :'D Soon after that I went on that long wide bridge with the 2 wolves thinking there was more to Yharnam only to be jumpscared by the Cleric Beast (I never felt genuinely fear in the game I began to hear my heart thats how traumatized I was seeing that beast coming towards you and I wanted to flee but I saw there was some kind of barrier so the only option I had was kill or be killed) and I somehow got him to a quarter health before dying. While Gehrman has the most beautiful, haunting music, and Mari has the most epic and grandiose, neither compare to the sheer badassery and savagery of Gascoigne's... The three hunter bosses have some of the best music in video game history. (Gehrman is probably my favourite OST of all time, just ahead of Red Square from Metro: Last light)
The Hunter bosses are also the most memorable ones imo besides Ludwig. Each were unique and different while rewarding you for learning the game mechanics the most.

I remember asking my girlfriend to pick between me playing Dark Souls 3 or Bloodborne (btw she knew nothing about either game or the genre in general). She chose Bloodborne because of the artwork on the cover. This was my first Souls game EVER and I tried to stay away from them because I knew they were hard. But I played anyways. Dying repeatedly as I made my way through Central Yharnam, leveling my axe, fighting through the sewers until I climb the ladder and stairs to see a graveyard. I knew this was a boss arena and I was nervous and scared because of all the other beasts I fought and raged to get here, but I stepped inside anyways. The cutscene plays to me watching in awe and horror of this man chopping away at the people I saw before and he turns to me to cut me down in his blood-crazed frenzy. I was overwhemled with his speed and aggressiveness. But as I fought him my 2nd, 3rd, and finally my 4th time I wasn't scared anymore. Just captivated by this amazing boss and character with this killer soundtrack. I slaughtered my first prey and felt that feeling that everyone felt when they overcame their first hard boss and I knew I had stumbled across a gem. Then I walked into the next section and got absolutely wrecked by the next enemies...Thanks FromSoft :) Lmao
I just love how Miyazaki absolutely FORCES new players to git gud in this game - and the game is so unapologetic about it. Either you learn how to play the damn game or this game is simply not for you.
I remember saying this when Sekiro came out. People were moaning for an easy mode so they can enjoy it. Hey, if FromSoftware wants to do that, then let them. But if not? Then git gud. 😤
This and Ludwig boss fight is exactly opposite. While Gascoigne goes from man to beast and the music goes awesome to frantic. Ludwig basically starts out as an abomination but goes to regain a bit of humanity, stands straight, and the music goes from creepy to goosebumps inducing.
Oh shit. I heard this line many times but didn't really know what he meant. At first I thought he meant your hunter hat which has a mask that covers your face. But maybe he's talking about your beasthood :O
DragonGodMillionare Possibly because Bloodborne was first meant to be set in the same universe as Demon's Souls, where people(Clerics specifically) will utter the word 'Umbasa'. I dont remember why, though, been a loooong time since Demon's souls.
I always wanted to get started with Souls-like games but never knew were to start. Picked this up for free with the ps+ collection and this bossfight made me know that now…now I’m hooked.
This is honestly the fight that sparked my competitive nature. After lose to him so many times there was no way in hell I was gonna let him be the wall I couldn't smash through. And that made my victory feel earned .
This is what got my friend into souls games because the thought they were just BS mechanics. He saw me after I beat Gasciogne and then he had to do it himself. Took him 4 days nonstop. When he finally did beat it, not only was he hooked, he had leveled up his play so much he didn’t die to a single boss thereafter.
I bought the PS4 just for this game yesterday. It's my second From Soft game, coming from DS1 on PC. After a couple of hours getting familiar with the PS4 controller, I beat father Gascoigne on my second try. And holy hell I can't wait to finish the game to play this boss fight again. I'm almost sad to have beat it so easily. I love this soundtrack, I've heard it only two times today but it's engraved in my head. I've played so little but it's immediate how the atmosphere of DS1 is carried in this game, that awesome depression that completly flattens you but that you can't have enough of. I knew I was going to like this game but holy hell, I absolutely love it. And it's only the second boss. Love it and love all of you guys.
Dude I literally started playing this game 2 days ago for the 1st time and I am already in love with this darn game holy moly this was something I least expected to enjoy, idk how but I managed to survive the sewers despite there being those disgusting lanky werewolf people and that area where those people burning a giant wolf on a so called cross (oh shoot nvm I remembered dying to those 2 BIG wolfs on the bridge and I somehow successfully collected my blood point currency thingy) and I ended up on that bridge with that flaming ball which reminded me of Indiana Jones, and I managed to get to Gascoign before The Cleric Beast (who I discovered on accident right after dying to Gascoign) and on my 1st attempt on both bosses I brought then to a quarter health. But man dying to Gascoign was BEST mistake because it allowed me to level up :'D I believe I can beat the Cleric Boss but I don't have the courage to do so but I'll try tomorrow, I have my Strength at 15, Stamina (Endurance) 14 and Health 14 and I forgot the other ones idk if do you think I can beat the Cleric Boss and Gascgoine or should I keep grinding till its too costly to level up my stats (Sorry for making this SUPER DUPER long Paragraph I just wanted to say my experience out loud)

FromSoft have had amazing soundtracks in all their games headed by the Maestro Miyazaki. But Bloodborne really grips into the very entrails of the lore and game itself, intertwining with it in more ways than just being an amazing backdrop for intimidating fights. Consider where this track is presented, or presenting itself, to you. It is, for all intents and purposes, the FIRST bossfight. Cleric Beast is optional and might be considered tutorial level. But this guy, Gascoigne, the gloves come off. Bloodborne shows you its true colors. You step into the graveyard, you see another hunter slaying beasts. Someone just like you. But then, you can see him sniff, and he smells you. Without using his eyes, he pinpoints and addresses you. Telling you two things: one, you will become a beast and as such his prey. Two, every beast once was a man. And with this, he sets out for you. 0:25 is where you realize: there is a lot of trouble coming in my direction. As you proceed to take him on, barely having memorized the controls, this seasoned hunter comes at you with everything he's got. With every passing second, the tempo picks up, with a drumming, looming bass. Like a freight train, rumbling in the distance, coming towards you. The hairs on your back stand up, Gascoigne moves quicker, the fight gets ugly. You swing away and think you can do this. Until...1:36. Gascoigne shows his true face and all that crosses your mind is "Oh, you gotta be kidding me..." But there is no time for despair. Only panic, frantic trying to stay out of this monsters reach. You run, he leaps after you. You take cover behind the tombstones, he smashes them. All that's left to you is to charge in and fight with the only thing you have still going for you: your animalistic survival instinct, shedding all humanity aside. Clinging to life with fangs and teeth. Blood splashes by the bucket and suddenly.... it's all over. Gascoigne falls before you, a beast slain by a hunter. Someone who's seen it all and has killed God knows how many people and monsters, who has fought everything Yharnam can throw at you and still, you stand victorious. So, let me ask you one question: Who, then, is the real monster...? Welcome to Bloodborne, kid. May you enjoy your travels!

This gave me a genuine smile. Thank you.
Truly a comment from a fellow hollow night player
Kinda like when the third Mantis Lord also stands up during the second phase of Pantheon 5 "Mantis Lords" fight and it turns into the Sisters of Battle fight then the music kicks in.

Really ? I thought the Cleric Beast was the first.
@@waldatheboye that was the intro boss... lol.
Well he has a big health bar, a name, harder to kill than your average enemy, and a special theme only shared with a boss encountered slightly later. For me, that defines a boss.
@@waldatheboye Cleric beast is optional. He's on dead end and gives you only a badge :P
That makes Gascoigne a first boss XD
SevenFingerDiscount so we kill sad man?
The music box is actually his and his wife's as his children are never named but his wife is called viola
***** Ahh. Well then. Maybe it was more a localization play on words...or I'm just wrong. That too :D
He embraces the turn to beasthood...all for the hunt.
i think it would have been awesome if he appeared in the hunters nightmare too
also the time to pray and hope you survive.
I mean, pretty sure he was chopping up everyone in the graveyard, who weren't even beasts, including his wife, Viola.
@@watertommyzthere's a fan theory that the beasts killed her while he was on the hunt and that hate for his wife being killed fueled his bloodlust sending him into a rage killing everyone there to avenge his wife... Then you walk in as he's chopping away to fill a void
@@MozeKaliberthere was actual gameplay in a beta version were you teamed up for about the first half of Central Yarnham before he left to handle business, and then you found him like that. Would have made it a more tragic fight, if that’s even possible, because he would have known you but completely have lost his humanity at that point.
never played any souls before bloodborne, and this dude technically was my first souls game boss. very very unpleasant encounter.
it's faster paced than the other souls game, trust me i've played this and the souls games (not demon souls)
The game is, and I quote, teaching you how to really enjoy a souls game
the first few games teach you how not to, hiding behind a sheild and going for all out protection and damage, when in reality you want a good DPS and the ability to avoid enemy attacks
Go back to the other games with Bloodborne's message in mind
Playing all souls games before bloodborne really made it hard to defeat him of Cleric Beast. I was used to slow methodical style of boss fights. In BB you have to be aggressive. When my brother tried the game (no souls experience at all) he 2 shotted Cleric Beast. Feels bad man.

Just starting playing this week, from a huge Dark Souls fan, this is a master piece game and OST.
Bloodborne is my 1st game that I ever played from Fromsoftware I really wanted to try out one of the games before buying Dark Souls Remastered on the Switch (just the soundtrack alone made me want to get the game) I soon discovered that my older brother had gotten this game (I think from PS4 membership thingy) and I started playing it 2 days ago and I already fell in love with the game after karate chopping that stupid wolf in the beginning it took me almost an hour to beat it but I felt satisfied that I slayed it, I still don't get how I managed to get to Gascoigne 1st before the Cleric Beast but I ultimately died when I left him at a quarter health but that mistake was BEST mistake because I was finally able to level up my stats YAY :'D
Soon after that I went on that long wide bridge with the 2 wolves thinking there was more to Yharnam only to be jumpscared by the Cleric Beast (I never felt genuinely fear in the game I began to hear my heart thats how traumatized I was seeing that beast coming towards you and I wanted to flee but I saw there was some kind of barrier so the only option I had was kill or be killed) and I somehow got him to a quarter health before dying. This game really knows how to scare the player (;-;)

I always wanted to get started with Souls-like games but never knew were to start. Picked this up for free with the ps+ collection and this bossfight made me know that now…now I’m hooked.
I’m doing the same.
I love this Game, hope you have the DLC.
Gascione: you want to continue playing?
Player: yeah sure
Gascione: You must be this gud to enter....
Dude I literally started playing this game 2 days ago for the 1st time and I am already in love with this darn game holy moly this was something I least expected to enjoy, idk how but I managed to survive the sewers despite there being those disgusting lanky werewolf people and that area where those people burning a giant wolf on a so called cross
(oh shoot nvm I remembered dying to those 2 BIG wolfs on the bridge and I somehow successfully collected my blood point currency thingy) and I ended up on that bridge with that flaming ball which reminded me of Indiana Jones, and I managed to get to Gascoign before The Cleric Beast (who I discovered on accident right after dying to Gascoign) and on my 1st attempt on both bosses I brought then to a quarter health. But man dying to Gascoign was BEST mistake because it allowed me to level up :'D
I believe I can beat the Cleric Boss but I don't have the courage to do so but I'll try tomorrow, I have my Strength at 15, Stamina (Endurance) 14 and Health 14 and I forgot the other ones idk if do you think I can beat the Cleric Boss and Gascgoine or should I keep grinding till its too costly to level up my stats (Sorry for making this SUPER DUPER long Paragraph I just wanted to say my experience out loud)
Father Gascoigne and Ludwig, the Holy Blade are one of the best bosses in the entire game history. Just epic. ❤
My favourite character in the game. Even though he had little screen time. I wish he would be a guest character in a game like Soul Calibur 6
Or Smash Bros.
**Enters with a scene of a common fight between a few characters, only for the moon to turn red and Gascoigne showing up from nowhere, burying an ax in Mario's head.**
Gascoigne slashes into the fight!
father gascoigne and gherman are the real muthappukin G's , they should make a mixtape together , straight outta Yharnam fighting 2 hunters with attitude
u sir take this W
F**k the Great Ones comin` staight from the underground!
A young outsiders got it bad because he is from out of town!
And not the other hunters so choir thinks, they have the authorization to perform blood ministration!
Haha that second Phase Part always plays when i'm too late to work and cant find my damn keys!
xDDD
Plays when you are away to go to the toilet but you see a giant NOPE spider standing on the seat, as it then proceeds to jump down and chase you.
When the toilet is occupied and you you realy have to use it xD
When the toilet has no toilet paper.
When you wake up after a rough night and cant find your wallet.

Boss quotes all over the comment section...
I'll be the 1000th one, sooner or later...
bloodborne is just a fucking beast! so many things i missed in dark souls 2. bosses like this! fast, aggressive, hard with no mercy. and the music is just gorgeous. thanks from software.
+Tiger082762 I think most people enjoy Bloodborne more than Dark Souls 2

Gascoigne: "Beasts all over the shop, you'll be one of them sooner or later."
Me: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
Dies......................................................
Everybody gangsta till you run out of music box usage
Perhaps one of the most Metal orchestral pieces I know. Love it so much. Would _love_ to see this played live by an orchestra. Fucking awesome! 🤘
I don't think it's metal though.
I love how the "tutorials" of Fromsothware games are like the final bosses of the other games.
Harder, much harder
Just beat him, my favorite boss in the souls series so far.
Charlie Reed Still, the point stands. This guy is his favorite boss when comparing him to the Souls series bosses.
Definitely agree with you there. He's so ridiculously aggressive and fast paced. a VERY enjoyable fight, even if it did get a bit easy when he goes beast mode and you can riposte him with little trouble.
Same here, I loved the fight
Let's be honest it is incredibly similar (yeah some new mechanics, faster paced, but whatever), hell the priest even mumbles Umbasa.
Alexis Wynter Ha, I ran out of ammo on my way to the fight. For me, it was nothing but pure melee. A great boss fight.
Teacher: Now kids what does Papa Gascoigne teach us?
Kid 1: not to get greedy with attacks.
Kid 2: Parrying is our friend.
Kid 3: How to fucking die like a right ol' pleb
Gascoigne: you are dismissed.
You may be getting more popular with your RDR 2 videos lately, but I'm still so thankful you uploaded the Bloodborne and Dark Souls trilogy OSTs
When phase 2 hits it feels so freaking epic. It is like the best scene of the best horror movie you have ever seen. It is so shocking when he suddenly just goes wild. 10/10
