  • Terraced houses in the UK from the Victorian era have a reputation for being cold, draughty and frequently mouldy.
In this talk, Chris Hawker, David Copeland and Ben Nother from Hawkland discuss the principles and best practice of how to retrofit a traditional terraced house to transform it into a warm, safe and comfortable home, with an emphasis on how to effectively use natural and sustainable materials to do so.
They cover all aspects of a typical Victorian house and some of the tricky details, including how to upgrade kitchens and bathrooms, how to work with lath and lime plaster walls, and how to retrofit external walls and roofs.
They touch on aspects of building physics and how it impacts on houses of this kind, focusing on moisture inside buildings and how to effectively remove it and mitigate the potential causes it can have.
To support all the theory the speakers provide extracts from case studies of several Victorian and Georgian terraced houses that they have retrofitted in Bristol, to demonstrate these principles with real-world examples.
