Good review! I really enjoyed the book but think I would have preferred it to explore some more of the moral, ethical, philosophical quandaries as they were very brushed over. I think a flaw of the book is you could essentially transfer the plot over to any distopian world without having to make huge changes as it doesn't ground it's self in the world it creates. This is opposed to something like the hungergames series which the world context is of paramount importance to the characters and how they relate to each other, whilst also allowing for the reader to ask huge questions about humanity and right& wrong, which Pestilence seems so well placed to do too. This is tiptoed around in Pestilence by having 90% of the novel spent only in the presence of the two protagonists and thus it's about them & not much else. As you say it's not the books focus but I think it's a bit of a missed opportunity given the setting. On the other hand it is a very well written haters-to-lovers book and I think in reading it it just needs to be taken with a pinch of salt that that's it's objective. I really enjoyed the book but would caution those going into it that it's a romance not a more complex fantasy narrative. I'm curious to see how the rest of the series pans out and whether all four book become simply repeats of the original with different characters and settings.

You make some really good points. Personally, when I go into a romance I know that a lot of other things like setting will be lacking. But you're right that there were some missed opportunities.

This is great! I'll definitely check the book out! I am a little iffy on the kidnapping thing, but you're definitely right when it comes to human complexity. Plus, I feel like I should read it for myself and decide on how I feel about it!

The book has a good premise and had the potential to be great. But the writing was so lackluster and I was so disappointed with this read

I recently read this and I totally agree. I did get sad about the Rob and Ruth characters having to pass but their love felt strong but the book was just bad. Also Sara getting mad that a male bachelor had swimsuit models on his walls instead of the guy who’s literally killing everyone in the world really made me hate her.

I loved pestilence... but the rest of them became too repetitive, the MCs are basically the same with different names...

I've only read the first two. I'm still planning on reading the others. It happens with similar stories by the same author

Is it weird to be a straight cis male and be into romance books like these.
