I AM AUTOMAN. Walter Nebicher is the police department's resident computer geek... his immediate superiors think Walter's place is behind the desk and not on the streets. However, Walter has other ideas.
Walter's expertise in computer programming is unparalleled and he creates a special program, 'Automan,' an artificially intelligent computer hologram that looks real, sounds real and given enough power can physically exist in the real world. Together, Walter and Automan along with Cursor, a small floating droid that creates any object Automan needs to battle crime on the city streets.

2024.., anyone still remembers Automan, his cool car and this most catchy theme?😄👍
Thank God for UA-cam. Cause if you tried to explain 80s TV to people, they would never believe you.
I think Elvira would be the best candidate to explaining 80's TV,
I'm from Germany and it feels like I was the single kid in the country that watched this show in the 80s. Nobody knows it. Good to see in these comments, that none of us is crazy :)
I'm From Malaysia, I remember watching this series back in 84'... Good times...no worries ... Your never Walk Alone...lol...
@@anbarazen Your comment brightens my day :D
Grüße gehen raus an den deutschen Automan Fan Kollegen!
No, you’re not alone, this show was huge in Latin America. I loved it!

I haven't watched Automan's intro in over 30 years. Are we a blessed generation or what? Those of us who had the awesome luck to live in the 80's.
It must be true since it seems we all agree on that!
God bless 🙏
Maybe luck had nothing to do with, only blessing
Happy that I grew up in the 80s sad that I had to see the crappy dystopian world now.
for YEARS, no one else I knew remembered this series.
+Bill Kendrick This is random. What is this?
+Roman Fox en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automan
+Bill Kendrick I remember>>>
I came across this series by pure accident.
Same here. I loved it.
Automan rocked... turning corners at right angles lol
WeAreBluesSupporters4Life+ A recurring joke in the series was that, whenever the autocar made one of those 90 degree turns, Walter would hit his face against the side window due to momentum. It seems to have been removed from this version.
Yeah man..that 90° turns really Rocked! 🙂
"Don't they have whiplash in your dimension?!"
Just like the light cycles in the original TRON film.
@@chj2 Just about everything was cribbed from _TRON_ , including Cursor, suits with lighting effects, the whole computer theme, and of course the 90-degree turns. :)
This series was 100% the reason I got into IT, and thus the way I make a living today. I still remember it with great nostalgia.
Stop fucking lying
@@johnnyfonk999 Excuse me? You must be drunk, bro. Sleep it off.

Fun fact: In the pilot episode, when they're riding in the "Autocar" for the first time, there's a bit where Walter mentions video games and Automan casually says he's friends with Pac Man and Donkey Kong, among others.
HMMMMM...the idea that video game characters can hang out and chat with each other outside their individual games...where have we seen THAT before OH WAIT I MEAN ALMOST 30 YEARS _LATER_ . :)
You should watch RaOne movie... How a game villains comes to life and becomes threat to the Game player.. !!
It's one of the finest visual effects movie ever made by Indian cinema starring the World famous Megastar Shahrukh khan.
You should check out the cartoon series Captain N, it's on here.
How interesting
If you're referring to _Wreck-It Ralph_ from Disney Animation, the basic idea had been kicked around at that studio ever since Disney's live-action movie _TRON_ came out. You know, the movie from which _Automan_ got nearly all of its inspiration? Disney Animation had wanted to make such a movie in the 1980s, but they never got the green light during that decade, with video arcades already on the decline, so the idea was shelved, seemingly permanently. Then more than 20 years later, guess what?, people were nostalgic for video arcades, and the movie finally got made (with a retro rather than current feel, and old games and characters). Anyway, my point is that the idea wasn't exactly new or unique to _Automan_ at the time. _TRON_ itself suggests such a possibility, since the titular character, despite being designed as a security program, is skilled at playing what are essentially video games, and all programs have human personas representing them in that realm. That's not surprising because the creators of _TRON_ were directly inspired by video games (not computers in general, at least at first).
Not to be too down on _Automan_ , because I quite enjoyed the series, myself, but it never struck me as original, as it obviously looked like a ripoff of _TRON_ to me (except with a police buddy film angle). It is interesting, though, that _Automan_ had the same idea as Disney Animation did around the same time, and obviously put it on screen first, if only as a joke (maybe it wasn't, but it could have been).
I loved this series as a kid, it was very well known here in South America, but it was pretty short.
Yeah, with great spanish dubbing cast this show was a hit in all latino-america, it sold very well but it was not enough to keep it going...
same here in Africa. many years later the intro is still greater than what we have today
It was all automated.
Me too, from Sri Lanka. I was 12y in 1983
The show was very popular, among others like "Manimal", here in Pakistan. The year was 1990.
LOVE Y'ALL
Never noticed that little Cursor was kind of a perv.
My kind of perv. Lol
Cursor would not do well with the Me Too crowd.
Cursor as himself.
I guess cursor would be accused of having toxic masculinity
I did! Hahaha!
I ask everyone I know, have you ever seen Auto Man. " answer; no ! "
Had to look it up, just to know I'm not crazy.
you are not crazy bro👍
It's for real.
Crazy you are not.
I loved it.
I know what you mean.
The sparkly glow effect on Automan was done live on set. The suit had panels of retroreflective fabric onto which the sparkle/glow was projected and the cameras recorded it. So what we saw on our TV screens looked exactly like that on set. When Automan was wearing a normal suit the glow around sleeve cuffs and collar was done the same way. Strips of the retroreflective material and a blue light projected on them. Saved tons of money not needing any extra shots for the effects, no compositing of the effect etc.
What I remember was the glow disappeared from his cuffs and neck after a few episodes
The blue starfield effect was not filmed directly by the camera. It was added later in post. It is true that Chuck Wagner wore a suit with reflective panels. They had a special rig on the camera that projected white light on to the suit so the panels would show up brighter than anything else. They were then able to use that as a reference to replace it with the effect later. The special effects used on the show were very expensive. Every episode cost over 1 million dollars to produce making it the most expensive show that year. That's why it only lasted 1 season. There is a very good Automan documentary on Chuck Wagner's UA-cam channel where they explain all of this in detail.
@lovecraftarms the guy who did the effects had a website where he wrote that the effect was done in-camera
@@greggv8 Part of it was. The reflection of light was recorded by the camera. The blue effect was added later. There are episodes where video was displayed on Automan’s chest. It was added later the same way.
Automan, Street Hawk and Knight Rider....!!
No one can come close to these Amazing crime fighter tv series..!!!
Also, Airwolf and The A-team.
@@korren9920 and Blue Thunder and Manimal.
how about Super Force
Don't forget Misfits of Science.
@@tentringer4065 I loved Manimal 😇
I can just see the pitch meeting for this -- "So it's Tron as a buddy cop sitcom, get it??"
Yes, sir I do
As I understand it...basically originally Kushner and Locke wanted to just do the TRON sci-fi thing. And nobody wanted it, and nobody wanted it, and nobody wanted it...until finally Glen Larson was like "Why don't we do it as a cop show? Those are popular!"
And BANG! it got the go-ahead and got made. :)
The way they materialized things through the wireframe was very Tron-like, and so was Cursor (aka. Bit from Tron)
Buddy Cop show at least allowed for more relatable storylines than life inside a computer virtual world would have.
I loved that Cursor was a little perv - hilarious
And despite getting greenlit, it would ultimately get canned after only 1 season. I don't understand how Rotten Tomatoes gave it 83%.
I loved this show as a kid, but c'mon... 83%? Really?
@@robinchesterfield42 While that might seem a bit flippant and pandering at first glance to some, it was actually a good idea, I think. Otherwise, this show would have been nothing more than a _TRON_ wannabe/ripoff.
for years ive been struggling with a memory ive had from being a kid in the 80s about some blue glowing man who recharged through power outlets. this must be it
Same here. I knew this wasn't just a dream I had. Been wanting the answer to this for about 20 years now and finally found it! So satisfying.
🌝I never saw Automan; but I did watch Knight Rider.😁
Speaking of power outlets, I frequently had nightmares in my childhood over seeing the General Electric logo in my sleep!😱
Same here, I mean up to 40 and I had no name....-D
I have just seen this and it triggered a whole heap of hitherto untapped memories and feelings 🤣. I just know this series meant a lot to me however short it was.
Growing up, Automan was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Wow these memories. Glad to be from that era.
The memories?! There was only one season (12 episodes) fake nostalgia 😒
@@johnnyfonk999
So 12 weeks is not worth being memorable?
Right...🙄🤦♂️
The TV shows, music, & films from the 80s & 90s still mesmerize & awe-inspire both young & old's today, that was the quality of that era.
Truly the greatest

So neon. So 80's. What a great time to grow up.
Yeah, it was. Great 80s for kids and teens alike. Had great time back then.
Unfortunately, I never got to experience the 80's firsthand, because I was born in the early 2000's. However, I am trying to make UA-cam videos that look as close to the 70's and 80's as I possibly can, because I love it.
OMG THE 80's CHEESE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE
Cheese? This was the height of cool back then!
I'd love to see someone redo a modern series in this 80s style, right down to the music. Like, say Homeland or Daredevil in Miami Vice or Knight Rider style.
This is 2019. I know years later. But in response to Bill Kendrick, I remember this show well. As a matter of fact we would have a debate who was faster: KITT or Automan. Little did I know years later that Glen A. Larson created both shows. He stated in a interview that he was able to get Automan on the air on the strength of Knight Rider.
I would have to say automan is faster...look how he takes corners 😳😳😳😂🤣😂🤣😂
One of the most underrated 80's tv shows ever😁
TRUST ME! I know what I'm doing :-)
Indeed it was.

It deserved to be underrated. That’s why it did one series
Automan From the Creator of Knight Rider, Magnum, P.I. and Knight Rider
Glen Larson was a ground breaking producer in the late 1970's and early 1980's
Don't forget Buck Rogers In The 25th Century (I watched every episode in Season 1 especially when Pamela Hensley was a guest on it), and also Battlestar Galactica, watched it religiously also during its first season before "Galactica 1980" came on and ruined it, much like they did with Buck Rogers in its second campaign.
But yes, Glen A. Larson was at the top of his game, both he and Stephen J. Cannell (of The A Team, another one of my favorite shows from then) were TV geniuses who came up with nothing but hits, more hits than they used to play on 102.7 KIIS-FM back then (yes L.A. native here so I DO know about KIIS-FM, born in Panorama City, CA in 1966, but now have lived in my current home here in Port Townsend, WA since 1987.

Hahaha I loved this show! It was a hit in South America. I remember being in love with the actor who played Automan 😂😂🙈. I was 10/11 years old back then.
So did I. I had the biggest crush on Automan also.😍
This show blew my mind when I was a little kid in the 80s! I truly feel like it could be brought back today, and I have so many ideas!!!
Well, seeing as im here, you might as well pitch one of them to me 😂👍👍
I mean the effects would be easier. I recall hearing somewhere that it was canceled mainly because there was no way to have a large enough audience to pay for the effects budget.
@@Chokah the animation on his suit is insane
An underrated show, eh?
I can't believe I used to watch this. I was so into it. Lol
Automan and Street Hawk were my favourite shows as a kid.
How did I miss this show as a kid? Right from the mold of Street Hawk and Airwolf two of my favorite shows from that Era.
I found out about this show Oct. 17, 2022 and I want to watch it 😫!
You might be too late. It probably won't have the same magic watching it now as a kid in the 80's.
This was a very popular series in India, when cable TV first came to our shores in the early 1990s. Had the opportunity to meet Chuck Wagner in Pensacola, FL almost 20 years later while I was working there. Great show!
A show that was popular in Singapore and Malaysia. We got it in 1984 and 1985 respectively. Great show.
Short-lived but left lasting memories.should be remade for the current generation.
I’ve never heard of this show but man I bet it was insanely expensive to produce back then.
Saw Chuck Wagner in two shows on a cruise recently. Unbelievable singing voice and talent, and a personable, intelligent gentleman.
Those special effects from back then would give some of Hollywood's recent trash a serious run for its money. I loved this show as a kid. One of the best amongst classics like Manimal and Street Hawk.
This happened thanks to Tron the movie.
thank you.....that's what I have been thinking....yes.....everybody remembers KITT but not this iconic gem....
AAHHHH...MY CHILDHOOD. 😂
School days with your Commodore 64, Atari 2600 or Colecovision and this.

Man, special effects were pretty damn good!
I use to love watching this and was a fan of Desi Arnaz Jr, like his dad! I wish there was more than 13 episodes and 1 Season! At the time when it was on, I couldn't even tell until I watched the last episode that was left open for Season 2.

I loved this show as a kid, like so many others in the comments. I had a pet garter snake at the time that I named "Cursor."
I knew I wasn't crazy!! I remembered this show, and nobody else does
Even though I now know that the car was just a Lamborghini Countach, back when I was a kid, it was the coolest car in the world to me! The blue lights made the car look so cool and futuristic! I loved this show!
How much I love this series! I never missed it. Thanks for bringing back our childhood memories.
I'd love to see this as a feature film. Imagine Paul Rudd as Walter and Chris Hemsworth as Automan. It would be incredible!

I was obsessed with this series when it came out. I was probably 8 or so, and wow. I loved it.
I used to watch this on Saturdays when I was 5 and 6
After all these years, I stumbled across it!!! Thanks UA-cam recommendations!
love this show back then... it suddenly stopped airing one day and I was a sad little boy...
They rerun the show on the SciFi channel and it turned out there was one episode that was never aired.
2020 WHAT a tune music and that blue suit i really want it Still :)
Yeah loved this show "back in the day". A show few people seem to recall. Also, remember The Highwayman (I think that's what it was called)... semi truck that turned invisible and the semi's cab turned into a helicopter?
This show and Otherworld, two series from the early 80s that never made it but I'll always remember.
And now auto man is our every day life ! Great childhood memories 👍🏻
The main thing I remember was Desi's face plastered on that car windshield, on. every. episode.
IRL, he would have broken his neck but heh, TV physics.
I think I've seen an episode or 2 of this years ago on the Sci-Fi Channel, I'm not sure. But since I've heard of this and seen clips and the great intro of this, I definitely gotta get this! This is definitely an underrated 80's show!
Lego
Doyal Meadows This show had potential for sure. It got cancelled cause it was very expensive costing a million dollar each episode. However if you watch carefully you will find the acting and plotlines were appalling most of the times. Even compared to 1984 standards.Nonetheless it will always be a special show to me, bringing back memories from first grade.
Passing off Desi Arnaz as a nerd, saying "That's be SWELL?"

Thank God I was a teen in the 80s so many great shows
I remember the car but couldn’t remember the name of the show haha. Used to watch this in Puerto Rico back in the 80s it was so dope 🙌🏽
How could anyone forget Desi Arnaz Jr.?
That theme song brings back memories...
The seventies and eighties were TV gold - sure, a lot of it probably looks corny now, but growing up with the 6 Million Dollar Man, Salvage 1, The A-Team, Knight Rider, this show and many others, took the dullness out of things...well, that and playing outdoors all the damn time.
If you think about it, this show is reality now with 3D printers creating tangible objects out of thin air, cars being developed that drive themselves and virtual assistants/A.I. that can think for themselves and solve problems.
I'm surprised this show has this many views,...I didn't think anyone remembered this show except for me!
Automan, manimal, the A team, BJ and the Bear...best year ever as a kid
