Recycling 3D Pen Waste

- I show how to recycle 3D Pen plastic waste into fun and useful objects using silicone molds and a toaster oven.
This method of recycling works well when paired with 3D Pens, because it easily provides a solid PLA shape which can then be penned upon.

I did this fairly recently with some heart shaped silicone chocolate moulds, made them in to really pretty necklaces for my girlfriend. A few tips -firstly your temperature is way too high! 205c is the temp needed to push through a nozzle, but I used about 100c for 40-50 minutes and it melted fine - NO BUBBLES! It's not a race. Also, you don't need any oil. I keep my plastic waste separated by colour, I think it looks much nicer when it's only 2-3 colours.
Thanks for those tips- I was definitely trying for speed! Glad to hear that lowering the temp gets rid of those bubbles.
@@PotentPrintables I found a picture of my first test one...

@@jasonshallcross2741 that is a nice heart.
@@PotentPrintables I have the exact same moulds for my resin projects but what I did was used chocolate in r2d2 mould stuck them together to make one whole droid
I have to say. This is one of the best videos for recycling waste pla that I’ve seen. Great job.
Thanks, appreciate that!
Something I only learned very recently - spray oils contain dimethyl silicon (anti-foaming) that can break down at least some silicone rubbers. Check your molds to see if they start getting sticky after a while. You could always use plain bottled oil with a paper towel if you have issues.
Cool video!
Thanks for sharing this Dan, I'll keep an eye on it!
Just ordered the LEGO molds and a $25 toaster oven. Can’t wait thanks again.
Awesome, have fun with them! Some good comments on this video on baking at a lower temperature for longer, to avoid bubbles so check those out.
When smashing the pieces down, the first thing that comes to mind is... Will it Blend?
Finally I can do something with all the waste that I can't bring myself to throw out! Brilliant and thanks for doing all the testing too 👍
I haven’t used my 3D pen yet. I love that it can be recycled like this!!! I can make things as gifts this way or make something for my daughter. Thanks!!!
Life hack for 3d pens: if u cant get a wood burner just use the end of your 3d pen with out dispersing any filament
the tip it hot enough to smooth out the plastic.
Loved those time lapses! I’m definitely going to save my waste!
Nice, have fun with it!!
Loved this video. The time lapses are amazingly relaxing to watch and great idea too.
Awesome, thank you!
I have been 3d printing for almost a year. What a great way to use all my pla. Something to think about I saw a UA-cam video on making silicone molds. Thanks for the great video.
You're very welcome, glad you liked it!
I always keeping filment scraps, but i dont know why, and this what i saw in video best way to use it! Thanks!
Ive n
Been 3d penning for a couple of years now and ive never thought to try this with my waste.
I love this, defo some fridge magnets gonna be appearing in my furture now.
Thanks for all the great vids, huge fan!!!
Well this did not dissapoint and them time-lapse WOW this is amazing i need to try this. Great work mate as always really want to try sculpting a solid block.
Thanks, glad to hear you liked it!
I usually just use the leftovers for a simple skeleton
Great tip! Thanks.
Awesome to know i can repurpose failed/ test print filament ,btw I just got into 3d making , got a 3d pen a few days ago for my birthday and i must say your videos have been verry helpful! :)
Glad I could help and have fun with your new pen!
I think if you trim the material even smaller, less bubble will be made.
Why not use a small food processor that has a coffee bean or whole nut setting to finely grind the waste into a semi fine texture. For me coffee bean setting works great to create a fine texture with less air. You can tamp the fibers too in a mold. I also seperate my colors as best as I can. But I rarely use multiple colors. I prefer to paint on a neutral color. I also use 3d doodler pro pen.
I swear the first time I heard you say "flush cutter" I thought you said "flesh cutter" and was like "what?!"
Lol- you're like what kind of video is this!?
it's really better than throwing it in the trash
These videos are very inspiring! You might find it useful to build a paper hopper above the cavity of the mold to hold extra filament waste chips. Have you ever used a household iron to smooth larger flat areas?
Hi, thanks for the video. I just bought a 3d pen 1 week ago. 😀
You're welcome- have fun with your new pen!
Really amazing you know
Nice Video, its good to know that PLA can be recycled like this, just a thought to try and stop the bubbling, try a smithing approach, melt the PLA down into a melting pot and pour it into the moulds?
This channel is underrated man you deserve more views and subs. I watch all of you're videos
Thanks, really appreciate that!
Amazing 👏 where did you get those star wars mods
I wonder if starting with a small amount of plastic in the mold would make it easier for the bubbles to escape, then adding more and melting again.
Good idea 👍
Nice idea to try, thanks for suggesting it!
Thanks! All I can say is BLAAAAAAAADE!
Awesome! ^^
You are really a motivation to others
Thanks, appreciate the kind words!
If you were to use a blender or grinder of some kind to break the waste into smell pellets I bet you could pack alot more into each mould, perhaps have less air bubbles
I already have a dedicated toaster oven for my polymer clay work... and well, that's just another form of plastic, right? I've also been keeping the scraps and shreds of not only my 3D pen, but my less -than-a-month-old 3D printer as well.
Hmm... and I already have and know how to use oven-safe mold putty...
Oh the ideas, the things I can play with... =broad grin=
Cool- we are thinking along the same lines...I may have some videos in the future that you might like :) Have fun with it!
After a year, have you had any success with combining polymer clay technics and PLA scrap recycling in your craft oven?
u should have at least 1 million subs you are doing great so far i’ll try this technique
when i will get a 3d pen😞
I just want to say when you use things that small there is going to be a lot of air inbetween the pieces
Great video
Thanks!
Nice technique. I am curious tho if you can eliminate the bubbles by shredding the plastic into powder with a blender to cover more density inside the form.
Thanks. I think shredding plastic waste is a whole subject in itself, that I've seen other channels look at.
the first darth vader has eyebrows
Hahah like a unibrow! Can't un-see that lol
haha
would it be okay to do this with ABS filament?
The only reason my mom bought a 3D pen is cuz I need to use it for school😅 but I did not know how to use it and your video taught me a lot and now I'm excited to make more the things with it. Thanks!
What I do with my 3D pen waist is if I have a hole and I could take some of it and then just melt it onto that hole using the tip of my pen
Nice video! Yeah, I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable mixing food and plastic either... I just don't like it lol
Thank you!
cool
Haha i also keep all my 3d pen waste and just melt it with a wood burning tool
Glad to hear I'm not the only one!!
consider melting down the plastic with acetone instead of heat.
Отлично!
Теперь знаю куда деть отходы.

Maybe could be done with hdpe plastics
I don't have a oven☹️☹️
👍
😍
I save mine. Those coils weren't to small for 3d pen. And your going to make me, to make a vid.
it looks like a cheese. good dea~^^
