    What I find interesting about height and feeders is, their mums height never changes, the lambs height does, so why the need to make it easy for the lambs? Or, is that all you are doing, making it easier for them? Love seeing the lambs at the milk bar. Must get me a block holder, never had one. Love the independent woman. So could one flush the tubes each night and not put them back on till morning, or is that a hassle job? Sneechers on beaches, crack up.

    • @gennabird107
      @gennabird107 Рік тому

      Do you mean the milk feeder or the meal feeder? The issue with the meal feeder is more about them standing in it and pooing in it! They love jumping on stuff :-)

    • @kiwifarmernz
      @kiwifarmernz  Рік тому

      Just eayser for the lambs I think as the teats come straight out of the board not angled down. The block holders are so good.

    Have gotten a heatwave for lambing this year (due to start 3rd September) is the milkbar teat divider worth it?

    Genna did you say that non mother raised or lamb bar raised lambs can't become dairy ewes in the sheep dairy system about 28 mins in - why is that?

    • @deedawson6074
      @deedawson6074 Рік тому

    • @gennabird107
      @gennabird107 Рік тому +3

      Ah,no, when I said the 'lambs that can't be used in the dairy system' that was a really long way of saying male lambs!! Hand raised lambs s absolutely can be milked as ewes.... if they are girls 😆

      @@gennabird107 that makes sense - my thought was cattle dairy's only grow their calves on milk feeder very weird that the sheep industry is not the same - but saying the boys can't be used then yes they won't give milk only meat

  • @stewbird

    Do you have to monitor them so they don't over feed themselves on the milk as it is in constant supply or will they self regulate and not get bloat etc?

    • @kiwifarmernz
      @kiwifarmernz  Рік тому +1

      Its just like on the ewes, they will have a small feed then, play, sleep ect and come back for another feed. So its little and often.

    Hi, you are feeding 50 lambs. What is your ratio of orphans to lambs that are mothered? Is it like 1 orphan for every 10 mothered? Google didn't give me anything about the expected ratio. Do you think your ratio is about normal? Any thoughts on the mothering skills of different breeds? I have a few of mixed beeding for home meat and this year has been a bumper for twins and triplets and only 1 of a triplet that was rejected. My small flock of 24 has suddenly become over 60.

    • @kiwifarmernz
      @kiwifarmernz  Рік тому

      That's a big jump. We'll done. I would say about 1 in 50 of ours miss mother but maybe 1 in 25 for the milking ewes. The ewes we have are better mothers in my opinion. Definitely a correlation between breed and mothering ability.

      Hi Brent, we dont but Gennas family does so they did have some left over early on which we used. The Delavel Milk power mixing machine is a better system in my opinion, but its more expensive too.
