M54 is really realible engine, even more is m52, but its lack of power requires turbocharger or compressor. These engines are well build and can be really reliable if maintened properly. But in the diesel world, m57 is total goat. I personaly own an e39 530d and I totaly love it. Power, torque, even the sound is nice. But for me, I can´t have only diesel bmw knowing it´s not real bmw in some way. BMW is primarly about petrol inline six cyl engines. However, I don´t recommend it in the heavy five series. Six cyl is best for 3 series (e46,e36,..), 3.0d or v8 is for me only reasonable choice for 5 series.
Totally agree with you about everything you said. M52 and M54 are great, they just need a lot of money to make them super fast (turbo, etc.). Even the N54 and N55 are ok, but I will go with the more reliable M57 diesel. Looks like B58 is a great engine in terms of reliability and power, if we only consider petrol BMWs.
