- Calculus Implicit Differentiation: How to solve problems in calculus when a function is not in the form y=f(x). It enables us to find the derivative, or rate of change, of equations that contain one or more variable, and when x and y are intermixed.
The video contains a lesson along with detailed examples which illustrates the method or how to of implicit differentiation. The practice problems provide a good overview of typical exam or quiz type questions.

My left ear enjoyed this video.
haha - yeah during the editing process only one channel come through...
oh ok i thought my headphones were messed up.
Honestly couldn't even watch because of that.
THANK YOU! Why does nobody tell you how all of a sudden this y derivative has to be included where it wasn't before (even though it was). It is 100 times more confusing when teachers never explain that fact. Great Video!
Wow, a real teacher! Excellent teaching! Truly wonderful. If this country would have teachers like you in every classroom then we would be way ahead in advancement and I am sure our future would be absolutely promising. A society begins to fall from the moment when intellectuality, art and good teachers are not being respected enough and elevated to a certain high level of importance. Many people downplay the fact that a great teacher is an imperative milestone in the intellectual development of the students of any educational institution. The method, the passion and the cleanliness of how you teach should be exemplary to all who want to teach others. Your channel should be watched by millions of people and for that I will definitely spread the word. Respect can only be earned they say and you have earned my utmost respect with only this single video. Bravo and my hat is off to you!
Thomas Parker I am truly overwhelmed by your kind words. Teaching is my passion, and I aspire to teach in such a way as to make learning fun for my students. I truly believe that all students are capable of success, and that all students can excel given the right resources and encouragement. Thank you for encouraging me, as I continue to strive for excellence in all that I do.
oh my god, you explained what i couldnt learn over 3 semesters of retaking calculus within 38 mins. you are saving my grade rn. thank you so much!
I don't know if I should be happy or sad that a free UA-cam video taught me x1000 better than a class I paid $3,000 dollars for at university.
Sock .... I feel the exact same way.... I look at how my professor takes us around the mountain and back when all he has to do is be this straight forward.... smh.....
at minute 23;00 or so you did a small mistake, you subtract (y) instead of adding. but thank you everything was very clear and know i am able to understand implicit differentiation, thank you
+Anderson gonzales gutierrez Yes, good catch.....
+Anderson gonzales gutierrez yeah, I also noticed that
Did you guys also notice that there is a correction notification at the top to show this?
YUP SHE SEND ME A MSG FOR LETTING HER KNOW
jaja i was going crazy about that also i was hoping for the correction on the comments, thanks.
This is the best explanation I've found on implicit differentiation on UA-cam. I'm watching Professor Leonard's videos, which are great, but I didn't really follow his examples on this topic
I love how you explain every step. I found that your process kept me focus and not wondering how you arrived to each step. Thank you!
i'd be ecstatic if there were multiple choice calculus questions on my tests.
I wish my professor was as good as you !
6yrs later, still the best of the best tutorial on implicit diff. I can’t thank you enough 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I'm getting all my A level kids to watch your videos. They are great and beautifully taught/ explained. Tidy :)
I am a retired teacher who decided to learn calculus as a personal challenge. I truly appreciate your methodology. Your clarity is amazing, and as a senior citizen I really need it. I can't thank you enough for making your videos. I believe that I am going to take advantage of your full course. I'm not in a rush, as I have the time.
Hey +Alex Chmil - WOW, Thank you so much for your kind words. It's interesting because I have a few other retired teachers taking our course. Some are tutoring, but some are taking it for fun like yourself. :)
Hands down best implicit differentiation lesson on UA-cam.
I wonder why High School teachers teaching AP Calculus can't teach calculus like you. You're superb. One of the best on the net. Please post more videos. Regards
This is simply the BEST explanation that I have seen......
I am currently enrolled in a Calculus based physics class at my college and it has been a while since I have actually done any calculus. I was considering dropping my physics course because I was lost whenever we got to the calculus parts. Your videos help me so much with my personal calculus review. Thank you soooooo much.
Hey +Nathan Lewis - You're most welcome Nathan. Thanks for taking the time to provide some great feedback. :)
I have watched so many videos on implicit differentiation and this is by far the best!! So clear und understandable!!!
It's only been 40 years, but I finally understand implicit differentiation. It's a shame it can't be presented your way all the time.
Seriously thank you - This video made me realize I was doing the product rule wrong and helped me understand implicit differentiation.
why can' t we have teachers like this in College that can read students questions and not stop the lesson and just teach the Aristotle method. excellent information and easy to follow
The way that this subject had been explained, the clear video picture, the nice white board with a simple nice background. Everything was simplified and clear.... It is obvious your versed and skilled from the Math material... THANK YOU
This is so great! I've been struggling with Calc since the beginning. I wish I would have found your videos sooner. Thank you for posting!
You just saved me so much headache and made me wonder how my professor has made this so complicated to understand. I've been trying for days, to grasp it how it's been taught and explained to me, and within 20 minutes you've taught me.
Thank you so much!
Kyle Haines .... my professor does the exact same... I sat in class the whole period wondering how and why he did something and she explained it perfectly.... wish all professors were like this.....
you're the best! i watched this vid once and i am breezing thru questions i could never answer!
Good lecture, so clear without any fumbling. Now I know why Y changes to dy/dx at the beginning of a derivative equation without just assuming. Thank you Miss x
You and your wonderful clear voice and careful explanations are EVERYTHING! You are a calculus angel!
Thank you ! :) I will share this to my friends - I love how you repeat the process again and again and now it's stuck in my head :)
Good teaching! A whiteboard, a marker, a knowledgeable, enthusiastic teacher - who needs more. Thank you!
thanks!
Best explanation on implicit differentiation. No other person has made it simple to understand like you THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
You are an excellent teacher, thank you !
I took AP calculus in high school and going into calc 1 I didn't understand anything... she just refreshed my memory! Absolute genius!!
I wish I had found this video sooner. You're such a great teacher. I was able to grasp the concept very easily. Thanks a lot.
Fantastic teacher. 10/10 for clearly explaining.
I learned more from this video then the past three lectures in college, thank you so much!
I'm enjoying this video. I love the way she teaches it.
I know it’s 9 years later but I’ve got a calculus final tomorrow and this is very helpful so thank you
This was the most helpful video with implicit differentiation I've ever come across. Thank you so much.
I have watched a dozen videos on this, but now it finally clicked, so thanks.
The fact that experienced experts can sometimes subtract when they're supposed to add shows you that you've really got to watch your p's and q's (or x's and y's!)
I like the way you threw a trig identity into that 2nd to last problem. I ❤ trig Id's!
The best most in depth tutorial ever
thank you so much!!!!
teacher has been teaching this for two weeks now and you just made me learn it in 40min....... thank you so much
single best explanation I've ever seen. Thank you.
Thank you....now I understand implicit.....big up big up...everything is clear
God blessed the day i clicked on your channel, now i know the foundation of what i was doing for years. Long live the queen.
Yours is the best Implicit Differentiation video, good job and thanks!
I will say that this is the most perfect explanation i never met. Thankyou Mandam.
Two years later and you're still helping people, thank you!
:)
This in incredible. I have been struggling with implicit differentiation for almost a week now, and after this video I am able to understand it completely. You are an amazing teacher!!
Hey +michael bailey - so glad we could help. :) Thank You SO much for the kind words!
Wonderful, Ms. Jenn. You have undoubtedly chosen the correct profession. This is fantastically clear.
Hey +jpdemont - Thanks!!
This was the most helpful video on this topic by far! Thank you! :)
I love the way you teaching. Its clear and understanding also make the work so easy :). Thank you!
Thanks so much !!! This video saves me so much time!!
I don't think anyone else can make it as easy to understand as you did.
Thank you so much, you literally saved my time and taught me something new. May you live longer to keep educating the world
THANK YOU. I have no words to express how well you presented this lecture. Excellent. Just wow.
Great lesson. Thanks.
Thank you for making this. One of the only things on youtube I appreciate so much I let the ads run.
you're welcome!
Thank you for this video, I was absent from my class unfortunately and my professor isn't the greatest at teaching, so i'm in the process of catching up and this video was a godsend for me.
Moving forward, i hope to be able to find more help from you.
thank you so much!! i have a quiz tomorrow and I feel ready now.
I was skeptical about this video at first because of the length, but wow. Thank you so much! You slowed things down in a way that I could understand. Best, simplest explanation that I have found. Please post more related rates videos!
Hi Hannah Downing - Thanks for the wonderful comments! :)
As for the related rates, you can see another example on my site along with a lesson on the sidebar concept as well. See the links on front page, Calcworkshop.com
Owwww its so clear i need a teacher like her
Thank you so much. You're an excellent teacher. You're very clear and to borrow your own words, your methods are "so much nicer and cleaner" thus making it MORE UNDERSTANDABLE for slower students like myself to grasp.
Again, thank you!
Hey there - I really appreciate all your kind words. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
thank you so much! this helped me a lot
Great communication skills. Easy to follow lecture and all the work is fully explained.
That was great - bravo professor!
this was so clear and thoroughly explained. Thank you so much!
+Olivia Nyoni :)
Clear and to the point! What I aim for in a math tutorial! I also appreciate that you did not just do easy problems but you made them more challenging as you did more examples, a lot of other videos I watch only show easy problems but on an exam, professors are NOT giving easy problems. Thank you!
Thanks SO much - I'm glad you like the "exam" type problems too!
I really, I enjoy all this video making me raze the scare thing there I always skip away. Thank you.
Very easy to follow! 👍
Truly great lecture and very user friendly way of teaching... thank you :-)
You're awesome!!! You put calculus in a way that makes it so much more understandable. Thank you for your help
You are a perfect Prof!!!
you are honestly one of the best on youtube!!
Thanks so much Dan!
I love caluclus. Such an interesting world.
Thanks for doing these videos they keep me motivated and they offer me a place where I can enhance my knowledge further hence they do not teach calculus for ninth graders.
Good work!
you're brilliant! and i love your teaching technique. you've helped me soo much!
Wow! My favourite teacher.... I LOVE YOU!
Great examples!!
Best explanation ever!
This video is truly Helpful ... Thank you Jenn , all examples are clearly explained and understandable. It was a best choice that i watched it and worth my while
Have had a bit of trouble getting a grip of this until now. Your "just multiply with dy/dx" rule made it click, thanks :D
Hey +Lars Li - yep that's the key... :)
That was very helpful. Thanks a million
i really likes ur lectures. thank you so much mam .
Wow. You are the best. you make me feel like a smart guy.
