I think it was done partly because JW hated the fact that fans loved Spike. James made Spike endearing. If JW wanted people to dislike Spike, he shouldn’t have hired an actor with such, depth, charm, and wonderful bone structure.

He wanted to kill him at the end of the season but Dru and Spike performance was so good that the end was changed and Spike survived and betrayed Dru and Angelus. The season was going to end with Angelus killing Spike and running away with Dru from Sunnydale.

That’s exactly the same as what happened with Damon Salvatore- the creators didn’t like how much fans loved him (because somerhalder is the most talented on the show) because they wanted to use him as a villain for longer, so they admitted they intentionally wrote the scene where drunk Damon tries to force a kiss on Elena and then rips her brothers head off.

They did the same thing to Ian somerhalder Damon Salvatore, he was the ultimate talent most liked but the creators admitted they wanted to use him as a villain for longer, so intentionally wrote the scene of drunk forced kiss/rip brothers head off scene in hopes it would get fans to stop loving him when morality is not what makes a character loved-it’s the strength of the writing and acting of the character. They had already written him too human for us to not see the humanity in the terrible acts, irresponsibly portraying such themes

James is one of the sweetest, kindest people I know and he's talked about this before. How hard it was to do that scene. Seeing the person he really is, that's easy to understand. He's not 'method', per se, he always shows that genuine vulnerability in his characters. He's also funny as hell and that translates well, too. Coming from the perspective of Spike, he was out of his mind. I thought that was kind of groundbreaking, seeing him in that scenario, because who among us has not loved so hard that it made us a little crazy? Of course assault is never ok, and I honestly don't think he would have gone through with it. Something in him would have put on the brakes, but it really shows how maddening love can make us. How it can make things you would never do seem possible. How it twists and warps our rational.

What makes me bitter about that scene is the way their “affection” for one another unfolded to begin with. Both Buffy and Spike fought for control to the point of beating each other into submission before having sex. So to Spike, in that moment it was nothing short of the “love” making they had experienced before. The only difference is Buffy became emotional, instead of passionate, and there was a fine line, that was crossed. But he ultimately only cared about her consent. Which is why he went out of his soulless way to create a replica of her, to hold his desires for the real buffy at bay. Because even without a soul, when it came to Buffy, he still had somewhat of a conscience.

It to this day is probably the most difficult scene in any show to watch that I've ever scene. It was masterful, respectful, but ultimately uncomfortable. And it was a discomfort Spike and Buffy fans alike felt to the core. Spike was visibly disturbed by his actions, and possibly cor the first time - Buffy experienced true fear and vulnerability.

And the way it was described was just bad story telling. Whedon essentially said what would push Spike into getting a soul for himself, how bad can things get. And Whedon was quoted: "Well he can't kill Buffy. He can't rape Buffy. But he can almost rape her so let's go with that."
Praise to Charisma for sticking her neck out and calling that guy out, and props to Sarah and everyone else who came out in support. Terrific cast and terrific writers, that got dealt a bad hand of having to put up with a boss who put them in uncomfortable situations because he gets off on the shocking the viewers. I don't know who that female writer was the James referenced but to put that kind of personal story out there and have it used like that? Words can't do justice.

Paradoxically, it's one of my favourite scenes in the show just for his character development. It's ironically also the most horrific scary moment in a show full of vampires demons and monsters because its so human and vicious and possible to happen etc.
Also, I think it was very good way to show he was still a soulless animal and as much as he wanted to change he could only be what he is. And also a good way to remind the audience who spent past 4 seasons romanticising him what he really is underneath it all.
And the fact that that event makes him want to get a soul to try and be worthy of her love makes it even more powerful, especially in S7 and the finale. What a character.

I do happily admit that Mr. Marsters is showing darn-true manhood in the extreme: condemning things like rape- I mean, there's some real hope for his character as a man; an actor, as he truly hates what his character of William Pratt was driven to do; in part due to his character of Will Pratt's pride, and in part due to that character's extremely dysfunctional highly sexual relationship with a certain Miss Summers, who was his character's *lover* at the time.
One thing I do however agree with about that kind of event is that by far the most sexual assaults happen between lovers- however evil such a behavior is; and there's good arguments that she herself did exactly the same kind of felony against her own moral character regarding his character in their fictional characters' relationship: their relationship as fictional characters was rooted in lust, not love; so you better believe that they'd be downright evil- and that detail comes out of the staff of the show's remarks in the DVD commentaries!

I have known this scene existed because my friend told me before I decided to watch it so I was prepared. Okay, yes, the scene is terrible. I understood the purpose in the story and I decided to accept that it's a part of Spike's story. I get why some people were mad at the creators at the choice or hated Spike after that scene, it's their way to cope.
I only got mad after I found out that it traumatised the actors, James (obviously) and Sarah (even if I have never heard her talking about it). That is FUCKED. They SHOULDN'T have FORCED IT UPON THEM. The only reason to me why that scene shouldn't have existed is because the actors (or even if just one) didn't want to do it AND THAT'S IT.
Every time James talks about it, I get so nervous and uncomfortable because I feel so so so sorry it happened to him. Also it's, in my opinion, hypocrisy because there are consent issues all over the series and they were played as comedic.

I myself would rather die 100 times than be raped just once, if you asked any woman or man who has been raped how it feels they would tell you that it leaves a wound inside so big that it cannot be filled even with the greatest happiness that a person can have.
the feeling it leaves you with is cruel, exhausting, you can't think, you can't cry, you can't get angry, you feel robbed of your own person and your own humanity, I don't think James felt good performing the scene even though it was just an "attempted rape". and he was on the other side, imagine being on the side of the one who suffers it. When a show wants to denounce sexual assaults, this is exactly how it should be : uncomfortable.
And like it was the case here, actors and all the team of the show should hate those moments.
Unlike Game of Thrones that I despise. Showing a lot of awfull hardcore rape scenes, and not in order to denounce but to please pervert
The worst is that the writers (all men of course) thought all those horrible scenes were "hot".
    Seriously assh*les?! Come on!!!
And for those who don't know, I assure you the screenwhriters of GOT said they were very proud of this scene in particular : a brother raping his sister in front of a dead body (their father by the way, if I remember correctly) and they said it was the hottest scene of the show... I was horrifying to read that, how could it be... and everyone still enjoying such a show...
Reading horrible stuff in the original books is a thing, putting it in filming is another level when you take a pervert way to show it instead of chosing to denounce such behaviors...
And for the scene with the rape between brother/sister, apparently in the book it was consented, they chose to make it even worse...
Yeah, I can't stand GOT, even if I barely see anyone thinking the way I do about this show.
    For an opposite exemple
Millenium/The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, in both sweedish and american versions : it was a highly painfull rape scene to watch, and it was on purpose to denounce, and you feel that nothing was done to arouse the audience...
Anyway, James seems to be a very kind and honest man, makes me appreciate him even more 🥰

You are not going to like what I am about to say but it's way more complex than that. Spoilers for game of thrones but I don't think you care.
First of all, citation needed where you saw that the creators said it was the hottest scene in the show. I have NEVER seen that ANYWHERE. The creators made very poor decision but I have never heard that they film a rape scene because they thought it was hot and to please the pervert. I am not saying it's impossible but as I said "citation needed".
second, the sister you are talking about is Cersei Lannister and she is one of the most despicable person in the story. In fact, she pretty much cause a civil war WHICH causes things like plundering, murdering AND rapes all over her own country simply because she wants to stay in power. She releases all of those atrocities on dozens of thousands of innocent people and she couldn't care less. She only disliked sexual harassment when she is the victim but as long as it's other people suffering, she don't mind if the war-crime goes on. Contrarly to your description, she is not an innocent victim FAR from it.
So the sympathy for her character was very limited when it happened.
The same way in the Show Oz (1997-2003), at one point two rapist (Guenzel and Wintrop) are imprisoned. And quickly they become Prags (prison bitch), Guenzel is espically depsical because he BRAGS about the rape he commited and he only disliked it when he was the victim but he love being the perpetrator. So my sympathy for him being raped is kind of nonexistent.
Well it's not that different when it comes to Cersei.
Third, In the show Cersei as despicable as she is in the first 3 seasons she is not as horrible as her book counterpart because the creators wanted her to be more sympathetic (make no mistake, she is still a character written to be hated in the show just a bit more tragic). And it would have been difficult for the writers to continue on this tragic interpretation of the character Cersei if she was consensually having sex in front of the dead body of her son.
Now if I were the producer and I wanted Cersei to be sympathetic I would have just removed the sex scene alltogether which would be much more efficient.
I am not there to say that Got was perfect the way it handled rape BUT I thought it would be good for you to have the context. Now if indeed the producer film that scene because they thought it was hot... that is something else but for that I need to have some sources.

Playwriting as therapy for the most atrocious things one has ever done in one's life: you recast your worst conduct as a domestic monster- which if you study vampire literature: that's what they are: domestic monsters... things like how Dracula kind of became Buffy's mom's new boyfriend and then he snuck into her daughter's bedroom and the like: NOT GOOD BEHAVIOR, Count, not at all! *That* is the kind of aristocrat that we so despise: the type to engage in things like attempted teen rape of your crush's child- that kind of truly Hellish conduct that so many of them went for, sadly!
*That* kind of misbehavior, in the real world, is the exact sort that leads to the deliberate mass-murder of all those in the upper-classes; and, with the exception of the harm to the character formation of those who did the slaughters: rightly so.

There was another guy, who was on a soap, many many years ago. and them made him (a rapist🙈) an anti hero, but his character for some reason, became so popular. He quit when his contract was up. He DID come back, a few years later, 🤷‍♀️.he said he still had to be a horrible person. They did the redemption story arc, to an extent. But that was a different time. People need to understand this. We really saw things through a different lens. I’m not saying in ANY WAY that we thought raping, or attempted rape was ok. But we we still were in a mindset of bad boy isn’t REALLY bad, if he has a good woman to help him. 🎉

Why are you invalidating his experiences, the fuck? If someone who is very uncomfy with a rape scene in writing form, do you force them to continue reading? "It's only fiction, it's okay." NO. You let them drop the book. There are people who like reading it because it's fiction and don't condone it in real life and that's okay. As long as you can differentiate it with reality.
HERE, he had to do it, even if it's only a pretense, but he had to act it convincingly. He had to say the dialogues. He had to do it upon Sarah, who he knows personally in real life. He had to do it again and again in every angle they told them to.

I was proud that the show almost never went there--woman gets raped (or nearly) woman in peril. So I think it was pretty ghastly ---and ordinary--that a woman writer came up with this for
the storyline. Until then Buffy had nearly been raped by Hyenya-Zander in Season 1, And then Spike. It's disappointing that the woman writer had to go to that same-old as-everyone-else kind of scene. Just my thoughts.

Well, Spike was trying to violate his girlfriend- *if* you could call them boyfriend and girlfriend; I have my doubts: that relationship, as her character's "stepdad" Mr. R. Giles describes it in one of the books attributed to him, was extremely dysfunctional and self-destructive in its nature. Theirs was a relationship rooted in lust, not love at all; so no wonder they'd stoop as characters to things like sexual assault, Mr. Marsters... your fellow was messed up in the head at the time, and it does stand to reason that if a soul is malfunctioning, you can expect the insanity of evil.
Still, and I stress this point: *any* sexual scenes are to be condemned, and if they happen, they're to be fully clothed; for the sake of the virtue of the actors in question- yet the actions are to be called evil in the extreme!
However, that show did aid me in some ways as a young adult; and as revolted as I am about the conduct of the characters, I am grateful for the good I was able to extract from it in terms of perceptions of God, for however short of a time it all lasted before it was exterminated within me- for ironically the kind of acting up that happened therein, both in the spiritual realm of useless prayer to entities (the most civil thing I can say about the spiritual practices of the characters), and the physical intimacy, which by the way was flat-out *disgusting*. Those two evils: the animal self and the demonic self, as C. S. Lewis described them in a radio broadcast during WW2, are what is wrong with an awful lot of things today!
