Overcoming Anxiety about BJJ Training after a Knee Injury

  • Getting back to BJJ after an injury always sucks and there is often a period of nervousness associated with it. No one wants to get injured. So when you get back you're trying to avoid that from happening again.
Recently I received a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu related question concerning returning after a knee injury.
He said that he had an MCL injury but it did not require surgery, just physical therapy. As his injury is healing up he is becoming nervous about getting back into BJJ. The anxiety of sustaining another injury is there.
So the question boils down to, how does he get back into the right mindset for BJJ training after an injury?
In this video I discuss my most recent knee injury and how I experienced the same sorts of uneasy feelings. Then I talk about how I eased back into my Brazilian Jiujitsu training using a slow and gradual process broken up over several weeks.
If you're someone that has recently had a knee injury from BJJ training and you're experiencing the same anxious, nervous feelings that Eric and I have. Then I hope this video is helpful to you.
    Thanks!

I think I just tore my acl, my knee is swollen twice it’s size, can’t bend it or straighten it. Feels like it needs to pop and it’s very tight…
How long did it take you to rehab it? Are you back to normal or is there a clear difference before / after?

I got a Grade 1 to 2 MCL tear in my right knee. I have been out 2 months. I could probably go back now, but I am waiting until Feb 1, 2020 to be cautious. But no surgery. The key thing is is: DO NOT GO BACK TOO EARLY. I cannot stress this enough. You think you might be ok to go back? Wait another month. Also, do your rehab religiously. But don't do too much too soon. The worst thing you could do is go back and reinjure your knee. Another thing: when I inured my MCL I felt something go POP in my knee....but it wasn't;t painful. Because I was hot and sweaty - I didn't;t feel too bad. I stopped for a moment. I could walk on it - I almost said, "ok, I can continue rolling." But I am glad I was more cautious and did not. Because one I had cooled down and woke up the next morning, I had limited movement and some pain. If you feel something pop, stop.

@@paologallardo8869 Slight discomfort. But I knew I had done something bad as it was laterally unstable. I could walk in a straight line...but any lateral movement felt weird and painful. No swelling really. If you just have an MCL tear, it heals by itself. You just have to do your rehab. If the tear is combined with a torn cartilage or ACL/LCL/PCL tear, you may need surgery. But survey has fallen out of favor for all but the most serious knee injuries.

Hey, i wish i listened to my body more than the voice of me ego ...hurt my knee in last seconds on pan ams 2024. Limped off the mat, took a week of but continued with strength, cardio and flexibility. After a week off I reinjured myself during a warm-up, took 10 days off , felt strong, again could not even finish the warm up. Took two weeks off then the same story again, got hurt really bad just pushing a bit harder on PT. Now I can hardly walk. You are 100% correct DO NOT GO BACK TOO EARLy to anything and baby sit that injury. This sucks as it creates such a void in my life

Thank you for this video bud. Much appreciated. I damaged my knee and took a solid week off from training, thinking that was adequate amount of time, before returning back on the mats. I felt minor discomfort in my knee on my first day back so I took a additional time off but decided to continue to stretch and some how the stretching really did a number on my knee and now I have to take another week off from training.

Chewy, we all want to stay on the mat for a long time, and that is why we are doing the best we can not to hurt our partners, but how can I know if I'm being TO CAREFUL? I often (very often) feel like I am losing positions and matches just because I am not aggressive enough.

    • @fonz25
      @fonz25 5 років тому

IF you find yourself losing often, especially to someone you feel you shouldnt have lost to... then you were probably too careful. I understand youre in for the long haul but youre doing yourself and your partners a disservice by holding back too much. Do what i do...im pretty aggressive (controlled aggressive) through positional advances such as passing guard but i will immediately dial it down once i feel ive got a good position or I have a submisison to threaten with. Also, when i "lock" a submisison in, I rarely fully apply it. I let my partner know i have it and them let them work out of it.

Advise is please just listen to ur Pt and take it easy don’t rush a injury no sport is worth it. I have a question that s start to bug me.
I be been doing Jujitsu for 3 month now at one of the main nation chain famous Jiu Jitsu gym where I live.
one of the issue I m noticing that the instructor teaches a technique and he puts us through it ... great ...
but when it is time to put it to the test and we scrambling with higher level belts who know the technique and know how to counter it, it's mostly ineffective.
this is start to bother me....
example the other day, he showed us the back chock .. great ..
we put in training where we have to escape it .... he didn't show us the escape... so I got chocked every single time.
the day after it was the same chocking techniques... however I knew that, so I start getting on you tube and watching how to scape the rear back controll and rear back chocks and it worked.
my question is that normal method of training in Jujitsu?
is it OK to feel aggravated or just go with it and it will come to me eventually?
    any advice is appreciated.
a bit about me I am a heavy weight bodybuilder and black belt in one of the other main Martial Art. (when I was younger )
    thank you

Popped my knee a week and half ago. Initial it was too painful to stand on the first day. Now I can walk on it and move with minimal pain feeling nothing crazy. went to the chiropractor they did some range-of-motion they don't think anything's torn but I'm scared of going back. The idea of my knee moving side to side is cringy.

I did the same thing 3 weeks ago. Looks like a tear in the lateral meniscus, left knee. Go to an actual doctor not a chiro. Got some good antiinflammatories and rolled for the first time in 3 weeks last night. Still thinking that maybe it's to soon to train again but just have to make sure your partner is aware and you're going to spend most of the training concentrating on your knee not the roll. Bettet to give up positions and realise the normal sweeps just aren't going to happen with one knee so have to try something different.
