  • Radio Amateurs on 40 Meters
Listening in on a couple of ham (aka amateur) radio QSOs (aka radio contacts) on the 20 meter ham band (aka 14 MHz), with the Sangean 909X.
Note: I may have mistakenly referred to the 20 meter band as the 40 meter band in the video.

I recently heard an amateur station on 20 that said he was in Barcelona Spain. I heard that on a new Tecsun PL 330. I was fascinated because I live in St. Charles County in Missouri. Most of the time I cannot hear much past Mexico or Canada.

I heard some guys in Texas chatting with Indonesia and a boat near the Virgin Islands on the band in 7 mhz range. That was surprising. I`m in Louisiana.

I listened in on a conversation between a ham in Texas and another on Canary Islands, I'm in midland UK. Granted I use CW and tend to operate on the 20m band. I've also heard a ham in Sri Lanka once. It's amazing what you can achieve with the right weather conditions.

@@baneverything5580 Texas and the Virgin Isles are still not so far off at that wattage. Spain is. Still a very magical hobby no matter where from.

    I live in uk.
Love listening to amateurs on my scanner.
    Always picking up Europe.
It's a good hobbie, weekends can be very noisy on 20,40,80 metres.
    I have a tecsun s88.
Only been into scanning 5 months.
When I get bored I might listen to sideband 27.555 and if it's busy I jump on my CB and give s shout out.
    Happy days.

That`s a Sangean 909 I think. Great radio but needs external antenna to shine.

Don’t forget that field day is at the end of the month. SWL listeners would hear a ton of activity.

I really don't get the fascination with these radios; I have one $40 radio with FM, AM NOAA, and 2 SW bands...I never get anything on the SW bands but noise; the second radio is five times more expensive and includes Air band and SSB, and it is digital and full of fine tuning features, presets, etc. Still just static noise (and I have the extension antenna). Just hope it pays off in a national emergency situation. Which is why I bought them.

Some people enjoy listening to radio. That`s why I own more than I can count and and enjoy radio videos. They`re also useful in emergencies like hurricanes when all phone services including landlines are dead to get information outside the damage area. Perhaps you might enjoy watching cartoons or cat videos, instead of this intellectual and hobby type stuff?
