Today is our anniversary, so we decided to do something different! We walk through a beautiful landscape with incredible hilltop views and we tell you about four of the features on our way. We are at the Hill of Tarvit - confusingly, the Hill of Tarvit, is actually the name of the mansion house here, the hill itself is called Wemyss Hall Hill, named so after the building that stood here before the current house.
We'll come back to the house later, our first stop, the Doo'cot at The Hill of Tarvit. A Doo'cot is built to attract nesting rock doves, or pidgeons, who provide a source of birds and eggs for the builders. People have been making Doo'cots for a very long time, early examples can be found in caves around Scotland. They represent an early form of semi-domestication of a species - a form of farming that relies of wild animals for its success. By the 19th Century Doo'cots were mainly being built as a sign of wealth; they had fallen from favour in the 1700s because they caused conflict between farmers, whose crops were reduced by flocks of birds living in nearby Doo'cots, and the landowners who enjoyed the Doo'cots as a source of fowl and eggs. We,ll take a closer look inside a Doo'cot on 18th Dec.
We leave the Doo'cot behind and begin our way across the Hill of Tarvit Estate, towards Wemyss Hall Hill. Its a steep climb, but we are looking forward to the amazing views from up on top of the hill. As we near the top, Nicole spots an interesting feature on the landscape - its a hill on top of a hill! Such shapes are often called Faerie Hills or Faerie Forts... Scotland, and its Celtic Neighbors, has a long tradition of faeries - we took a brief look at the subject in our Halloween Special. Today we ask, what is a Faerie Fort, and briefly consider archeological thoughts on the subject.
Leaving the Faerie Fort behind, we move onto wards a strange monument placed at the top of the hill. The first monument placed here was actually the Merkat Cross from Cupar's town centre. A Merkat Cross is a common enough sight across Scotland, and it is a symbol of a towns right to trade and hold a market. Cupars was won in a game of cards, removed to the hilltop here before being returned to celebrate the reign of Queen Victoria.
Making our way down the hill, we stop off to look at the history of the Hill of Tarvit, a house built on an industrialist family's success, though also the place were that family line ended. The last of the line passed the house and estates into the care of the National Trust for Scotland, ensuring that the family's legacy would endure long into the future.
As its our anniversary today, Nicole decided to make some snowflake inspired jewellery to commemorate our snowflake themed winter wedding 12 years ago today!

At the time of recording, we are in what the Scottish Government call, Tier 3 restrictions - this means that we are not allowed to travel out of our local council area, Fife, and no one is permitted to enter. I REALLY like the doo'cot. It looks like a tiny medieval castle. 🤔 I think I might like one for my very own...kind of a "tiny house" castle. Preferably with running water and indoor plumbing 👍🏻👍🏻😉.
I could actually tell the incline and decline pitch of the hill(heck it was almost like a mountain⛰️!!) while you two were hiking🧗🏻♂️. And the sound of the wind thru the trees was just so soothing and beautiful. So cool to see some pictures of your lovely and quaint town of Cupar👍🏻.

It was, for a time, the style to make them like wee castles! The accommodation would be compact, but I'm sure I've lived in smaller places! With the mod-cons installed, and maybe a wee extension, it would be such a lovely wee house!

I think we timed it perfectly - the sun didn't make the dramatic exit we hoped for but the build up was really something to see! So nice! It is amazing to think how that wee toon was once such an important location! And even until fairly recently too!

Another great video; shame the dookit (west of Scotland spelling) wasn't open! But actually, does anybody anywhere eat pigeon eggs these days??
Indeed, how many eggs would you need for an egg roll?! Dookit - good to know! I don't know of any big demand for the eggs these days, though pigeon was/is a fancy fowl for foodies! I think the squabs were also on the menu back then, though the whole dookit practice seems to have ended after farmers got sick of the resident pigeons at the estate filling up on the seeds they were sowing.
We've only seen that dookit open once - its looked after by the National Trust and, unlike many others around, ts in pretty good repair, though its blocked off to pigeons now. Oh We pop into a different doo'cot in a few weeks!

A Docoot how interesting, here in the states some folks see the pigeons as a pest. We have a lot of large hawks that we can see on power poles and fence post as we drive down the highway
Pigeons are no longer kept in the Doo'cots - somehow their eggs are not considered worth farming at this point in time... We have smaller kestrels and little hawks here, but not very large ones ...

That's such a lovely poetic image... When the snow falls it does blanket the village and surrounding hills - its very beautiful. We had a light covering of snow last week... it melted fast and the sun is out! Scotland has some very odd weather... Its set to get cold next week... we may have that blanket to rest under then! :D

@@scottishmudlarking I learned that song at 4-H(camp for farm based children) when I was little ,the place we stayed was in the Appalachian Mountains of Northwest New Jersey. lots of Rhododendrons and Mountain Laurel.
There's a song, which I have performed with our local Concert band called "In the Bleak MId Winter",,, quite lovely and lest we forget, "If Winter Comes, Can Spring be Far Behind?"

The last time I came here 15 years ago I’m sure it was very different and didn’t have a ramp leading down. It was just levels of wood like steps.

Yes it is indeed a style - like a little ladder and platform. It was our first time up that part of the Hill of Tarvit ( or Wemyss !) and I am sure the trees have grown quite a bit since you were here!! ??? Thanks so much Mallory :)
Wonderful history of the tower for pigeons...so the eggs was for human consumption. At first I thought it was a pigeon house
Thank you so much! Yes, the doo'cot was built to attract pigeons to nest and lay... We have a video coming out in a few weeks where you can see what a doo'cot looks like inside. The estate would collect eggs and squabs (young pigeons) to eat... These buildings often caused trouble with farmers whose seeds were eaten by the resident pigeons!

I used to live in a place in central Wisconsin USA, that (in summer) looked much like the scenery in this video (without the old buildings). By December it was buried under several feet of snow. Lots of wildlife there though. I stayed there a year, but then had to move back to civilization.
