36:00 Taking the easy way back
Crawford Priory is an incredible abandoned, ruin of a former mansion house in Fife. It was originally constructed in 1758, as a hunting Lodge for the 21st Earl of Crawford, George Lindsay Crawford. Though the Priory really came into its own under the ownership of his daughter, Lady Mary Lindsay Crawford.
Mary was a very interesting and strong willed person, she stood out from the women of her time both because of her compassion for less fortunate people and for her incredible devotion to animals. Mary chose not to marry and so she marked the last of her direct lineage. It was Mary who chose to dramatically alter the more modest hunting lodge that her father build, and to turn it into a architectural fantasy, mirroring gothic styling and fashioned in the appearance of a priory. The building has never served a religious role, it has always been a place of opulence and indulgence.
When Mary passed, the property as inherited by the Earl of Glasgow, who added a chapel to the building. Debt forced another change of ownership, though, as before, the property remained within the extended family - property seldom moved far from family ties, though, as was the case here, the property might shift from paternal descent into maternal inheritance.
Now in the hands of the Cochrane of Cults, the house changed shape again. This time the front of the building was moved from the west side to the north face of the house to present the facade we feature here.
When the 2nd Baron Cochrane of Cults died in 1968, the house was in need of extensive and very expensive repairs. In such condition, the family chose to abandon the property. The fixtures were stripped and sold off, then the roof was removed from the building, which hastened its decay significantly. To date, the building has been central in a series of ongoing disputes, between the owners and Historic Scotland, concerning whether or not it should face demolition or renovation.
While researching the building, its past and its occupants, Mary Stands out for her particular character and, not least, for the fact that, when she passed, she left a large sum of money to the poor. Her obituary notes that, among her "eccentricities" were that she "lean'd to virtues side" and to the cause of Humanity". In a period when political thought was heavily influenced by Thomas Malthus, 1778, An Essay on the Principle of Population... Mary shone a bright light on the plight of the poor and the voiceless. The publication of Dickens, A Christmas Carol, would popularise the idea of charity in defiance of Malthusian economics ten years after the passing of Mary Crawford, a woman very far ahead of her time.
Many thanks for watching, we look for ward to seeing you on Christmas Day!

Update:
There have been a few changes in Scotland recently - many areas on the West coast have relaxed though here on the East Coast, things remain unchanged and we continue to be in a regional lockdown. This effectively means that no one is allowed to travel in or out of much of central Scotland. As before, this does not cause us any immediate concern as we make most of our videos without leaving Fife
Your story about Mary sent a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes.
WE could use more people like her even today.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Mary really stands out as, quite the person, and one not to be messed with, in her letters and the other little bits I could find! We certainly could use more like her! Thank you so much! Best wishes, Craig & Nicole
What an amazing outing; so much colour, gorgeous scenery and wonderful history! Thank you so much for taking us with you.
Very kind, thank you so much for coming along! So glad you enjoyed it! :D
What an incredible building. So beautiful in its disrepair ❤️
We share those feelings 100%!
Thank you so much! :D xo
Hello from Washington state. Thank you for taking us along on this fascinating adventure! I love your channel!
Hello from Scotland! Great to have you along on our wee adventure, Thank you so much! That's very kind! :D xo
Loved going on this adventure actually felt like I was walking along side you both. Very interesting bit of history. Thanks 😊 x
That's great to hear! Thank you so much! Its a great place, were so happy to be able to share it - its a real privilege. Best wishes! :D
So sad to see such a grand building turned over to nature.
Beautiful History and video.
Take care and be safe.
🦋
It really is! We hope that some arrangement can be made between the owners and Historic Scotland, it is such an amazing building!
Thank you so much! Hope all is well, you too, take care and be safe! We hope you have a lovely week ahead! :D xo
Love the social history on your channel. The location you chose this time was great. Many thanks. Rob from Adelaide
Very kind, thank you so much for that! Social history and cultural studies are very close to my heart! :D
So glad you enjoyed the video - best wishes from Scotland! :D
What a beautiful place. Kinda sad to see such a building in ruins. Thanks for sharing it with us.
It is sad, we hope something gets done to preserve it and maybe make it more accessible. Thank you so much for coming along! :D
🥰 What a beautiful grand lady that priory was in her glory days. Even as time and Mother Nature steal her away, she has this elegant and stately look about her. So regal and timeless👑. I'm siding with Historic Scotland👍🏻. She should be left as she is, albeit protected from vandalism, for everyone to marvel at, and appreciate this stunning piece of historical and architectural wonder. And bless Lady Crawford for her altruism on behalf of those in that timeframe who were in need and had no voice in this world.
Those woods were very evocative of the forests in the Johnny Depp movie "Sleepy Hollow"😳😬. Kinda dense with old growth, and big trees with gnarled branches. I was waiting for a coach to come barreling down the road you both were walking down...or maybe some highway men 🙈🙊.
It was truly a magical place with the priory, forest and Craig's haunting beautiful music to set the feeling and mood.
Stunning filming, editing and just the way you both interact with each other and us makes me feel like we were all personally invited to go exploring with you.🙌🏻 Thank you so very much 👏🏻👏🏻. ☮️🕉️😉🤗🤭😘.
Oh, we so hope that some arrangement can be reached between the owners and Historic Scotland - it is possible to fully renovate, though I expect at a huge cost... Preservation would, I think be a good option - there are many historic buildings in Scotland that are shells of their former selves, though magnificent - this could be one of them!
Now you mention Sleepy Hollow, yes, I see it! Might have to dig that out for another watch too - its good fun! :D
I really love finding out about people like Mary, it just fills me joy to know that, even in times where it was considered "eccentric", there were those who saw a problem and broke with convention... Her care for the wild deer, that her brother had fed, just describes a side of her that is so remarkable and moving. Apparently, she was one to get on the wrong side of though. ;-)
You are so kind, thank you... that is such a high compliment! So very glad you enjoyed it! Stay safe and well, and all the very best of the season to you! :D xo
What a wonderful bumble through the woods. It is a shame that at least part of the Crawford Estate can't be saved. But at least we have the photos and your video. Thank you for taking us along!
Thank you so much, great to hear you enjoyed it! I like 'bumble', good word! :D We completely agree... its good the stables still exist, but there is so much more - if only some arrangement could be made. Thanks for coming along! :D
My favorite show yet! You are both amazing together!
Thanks so much, Kerry! I'll get to your other comment - no long winded at all, its good conversation and some good questions in there - I'll need to do a wee bit of thinking before I answer! :D
All best for now - I'll get back to you! :D
Lovely historical walk, and the Lady was a treasure!
She really was... She seems to have been a remarkable person! Thank you so much! :D
That was so interesting!
Hi! So glad you enjoyed it... it was really enjoyable filming and researching it! :D Thank you so much!
Such a stunning building in its day.
Awe inspiring! The letters between Mary and her architects make interesting reading! :D
Thank you so much!

What a wonderful soul Mary was, and maybe still is
She might be watching over Crawford Priory ....
What a fascinating place, Oh the stories those walls could tell? The stories of peoples lives, how they lived, who they loved the things they did and how they left this world. Thank you as always for sharing your journey with us all. Take care, Dena. x
So glad you enjoyed the video - it really is an amazing place, I'm always stunned by the way estate homes were almost constantly changing with fashions... very much a thing of the past! Yes indeed, if only the walls could talk! :D
Thank you so much for coming along! Very best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo
For a place I've never been, it looks so recognizable.
I grew up in the shadow of another of the architect David Hamilton's buildings, Lennox Castle. While Lennox is far smaller in scale, the layout and design are very similar, and the interiors were obviously 'from the book'. Even looking at the grounds and trees that are at the priory you can see striking similarities. We'll definitely have to pay it a visit next year
That is so interesting! I've just looked at a few photographs and, wow! The similarities in the design really are apparent! That's amazing! We've never been along there, so we'll have to get along there when we can... Might be a wee while! Lets hope not though! :D
Thanks for pointing that out, really interesting to see!
Thank you so much! All best of the season! :D
We really enjoyed watching that video. Amazed that the building has escaped being covered in graffiti and has so many of its beautiful architectural features in situ. That seems to happen so often to abandoned buildings around here. We've said it before but you are both such warm and natural presenters. Merry Christmas to you both from Andy and Josie 😀
Very kind thank you so much! :D
It is remarkably clean but not unmarked by graffiti... I'm glad its not, we've been in places where the graffiti has been, erm, very imaginative in its description - certainly not the kind of thing I could post on YT without getting unwanted attention! All the very best for a fantastic Christmas to you and yours!
@@scottishmudlarking there was zero Graffiti when I was there on 2014 and again 2015 for an overview with a drone , such a shame to deface such a nice building , you never mentioned the Fire which caused a lot of the damage to the structure or did I miss that part ? . subbed :-)
that was so enjoyable, thank you
So glad to hear you enjoyed it! Thank you so much! :D
Hi from Florida. I just love your channel, especially videos that you tell the history of where you are. No abandoned places this big in Florida. If you're ever near Shrewsbury I'd love some video and history of that. My 12th great grandmother was the Countess of Shrewsbury and a live video would be awesome. Thanks for the wonderful video.
Hello from Scotland! Thank you so much! That's very kind!
How interesting! That would be a great trip... quite a long one by UK standards, but we're really looking forward to getting out and about when we can, so who knows! What interesting relatives you have! :D Thank you so much for your support! :D xo
Loved watching your outing today very interesting even though it wasn’t mudlarking , it was nice but sad to see such a building then and now. Well done x
So glad you enjoyed the video - it is an amazing place! We are keeping our fingers crossed that, by some magic or other, an agreement can be struck to renovate or at least preserve the building! Thank you so much! :D xo
We will get back to larking around, I promise. :-) We do a few periodical series type thing - this is for the abandoned places series. Very best wishes! xo
Wow! What a beautiful place, even it's disrepair is lovely. Thank you for another wander through Scotland's history. Great video Nicole and Craig!
Yes, there is something, I'm not sure romantic fits, but something special about a place like this that defies decay... I like to think it has something to do with Mary Crawford's influence! :D Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed the video! :D
Cheers from San Diego California....We Loved this video. Wife has ancient family history in Fife, so wonderful to see the area. This was so sad that it is left to ruin...hope someone saves the place! Look forward to more adventures with you. Thanks.
Hello from Scotland! So glad you enjoyed the video, and that we can open up a wee window onto Fife for you! :D We could not agree with you more - it was and perhaps could still be, magnificent! We hope the owners manage to come to some arrangement with Historic Scotland, that would be great! Thank you so much! :D
Wonderful abandoned site and story! Now I’m thinking of teeny tiny pine marten cakes :D
Haha! I love pine martens! Now, I'm thinking about cakes too!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video... it is an amazing place! :D
An amazing adventure. The history of such a grand structure is fascinating. The architectural details of the buildings are beautiful. Thank you for taking us along. Wishing you both a very Happy Christmas.
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it... We had a great time making this one with so many interesting things about the place. Best wishes to you and yours for a very Happy Christmas! :D
What a beautiful building thank you for taking us there 😊
It's such a shame it's falling apart... we must go back and take another walk around :)
Nicole proved you right, Craig -- that was a sequoia cone! Good spot. What amazing remains -- the stonework looks to be holding up in the Priory. I can believe the ghost story but the window to the right @ 20:10 looked like it was showing a large question mark...like the Eternal Why. As always, enjoyed every minute with a smile on my face, thank you.
Its an amazing tree! I had no idea that was the cone! Cool... Its currently sitting on our stairs trying to inspire a crafty idea, perhaps.
I just clicked on the link and WOW! How did I not see that before! It looks so much like a question mark.
Very kind, thank you so much! Really glad you enjoyed that! :D
I just found your channel. I want to thank you! I am half way in and in such awe of this video. The fact that you did so much research to not just show a decaying old grand building with it's outlying estate, but to put it in perspective with known photographs of what certain beauty it of would of been at the height of it's glory days. I am fascinated by these grand homes, the stories, the families and the downfall of estate, that leaves them irrelevant in today's current times! Adding the story of Mary, gave me "goose bumps". That she loved and adored the old house, but essentially chose, to me, to do right by the people around her, respecting the animals left in her care, and most importantly being an outspoken women, when a women wasn't to be heard.....goose bump worthy! I'm not a believer in haunted places and ghosts....but to each his own. I do hope that if it were haunted, it is not by Mary! Your story of her depicts a women who gave life what she could, with what she had, and was seemingly loved and adored for it. I have watched several documentaries on what it takes to upkeep and restore these grand beauties, and the bureaucracy that you touched on about how it works. Ownship and restoration on these is so controlled and governed that it, like so many others, would seem are doomed. That is very sad! In seeing it from the decayed piece of history, to what it once was, I would hope that like me, most people watching, would love to see it returned to it glory! Thank you for sharing, and I am looking forward to more of your adventures!
Thank you, that really is so kind! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and content. I always try, if possible, to put the things and places we visit and show into some context. Crawford Priory, like so many places, has so many stories to tell; Mary was inspirational! To my mind, Mary is the heart and soul of the place - it is a real privilege to be able to share what little we know about her and her life. We share that hope, that one day, some agreement can be reached so that this incredible structure can be preserved and its stories remembered.
So glad you found our wee channel, thank you so much! :D

thankyou....lovely video again! Was laughing at end with Nicole singing about teddy bears picnic......he had a picnic in our yard last night! .....they are not so funny if you have a rogue bear around! we have a black bear in our neighbourhood right now...last night he knocked over and got into our garbage can...despite bungee cords.....and he also knocked over and got the lid off our huge composter drum. .....what a mess and very heavy to get it upright again. ....they are not so cute and furry when they make a mess but they are interesting if they happen to pass the door when you are safe inside.....this one has been seen just walking down our country lane. ...the beauty of living in rural British Columbia.
Thank you so much! Oh, you're absolutely right - we can laugh about bears here because we don't have the reality of living alongside them... I can imagine it must be quite a sight to have one walk past the windows, though I confess, I'd likely start worrying about the window! We do take it for granted that we can wander without having to be aware of such things - when I was a child, the worst we had to deal with was the birds pecking through the foil on the milk bottles we had delivered each morning. Oh, what a wonderful and varied world we live in! I hope the bear keeps itself to itself or, better, finds its way into a more suitable environment for itself! Very best wishes! :D
Oh my goodness, such an amazing home lost to us all
Yes, such a shame... the times of these kind of buildings seem to belong to the past. xo
I'm the same way when I'm adventuring, so much to see and imagine

I really enjoyed sharing your exploration of this fascinating place. Very peaceful and poignant reminding me of the impermanence of life in a very beautiful way. Thank you both and very best wishes for a Happy Christmas period.

We agree, it is so sad to see places like this go... It seems an attempt was made to get a hold on the decay in the 60s - the building suffered badly from damp. By the early 70s, as you say, the owners were not in a position to maintain the property.. We think they should consider handing it over to Historic Scotland. Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it! :D

A pet/animal cemetry?? Waaw....It's becoming interesting !!
Once I was walking through the countryside and I met an old woman who told me the proverb I quoted in my previous coment. I asked her what an "evil eye" meant. She said in Darija that there are 3 kinds:" Al aïn charga wal aïn gharqa wal houajeb mfarqa" (litteraly: one with covetous stares, the 2d with enophtalmos, the 3d has large glabella). She added that the 2d combined to the 3d kind in one person is the most dangerous , because he/she is able to kill a herd of sheeps by a simple glance !! 😲😲
Now , if you find some sheeps or sheepdogs buried in that pet/animals cemetry, it will be interesting to look for a person with enophtalmos and large glabella who lived there a long time ago. 🤣🤣
Greetings from Morocco.
@@abdelhak6470 Yes indeed! An pet cemetery! The stone in the video where it says she cared for the deer her brother loved - that is actually a ‘headstone’ for the deer’s grave! We will have to get back along there for a follow up - we’ll make sure we find the cemetery... And we will be very careful of anyone with those features should we find ourselves surrounded by dead sheep! :D :D :D
Our best wishes from Scotland

It's amazing !!
Happy Christmas.
Thanks for the tour. Beautiful
Thank you so much for coming along... so glad you enjoyed it! :D xo
I think the US calls them Dovecotes or Pigeon coops. That one looks like someone had horse stalls thrown together on the lower level. Very interesting to see that. Did you know when flocks of geese fly like that, each V is a clan of related geese. The Geese in the back are the ones who make sure everyone stays together and flies in the correct direction. Thank you for a lovely tour.
Thank you so much! Very interesting - I had not heard that about geese! I just read a paper (skimmed rather than read) by William and Nina Elder about geese kinship and migration! Fascinating, thank you for sharing that! I'll never look at them in quite the same way again! :D
Happy New Year to you both
Looking forward to Sunday’s Video!
Thank you so much! Wishing you and yours a very healthy and happy 2021! Hope you enjoy it! :D
Really great video. Love all that history. Fantastic
Thank you so much! Great to hear you enjoyed it!! :D
Wow, beautiful!! Amo la vostra terra, piena di storia
Thank you so much! We are very lucky to have so many historically interesting places around us! :D Best wishes, xo
Happy new year,Nicole and Craig . Let’s hope for a great year with lots of new adventures
Thank you so much! Fingers crossed its a good year for us all! Happy New Year, and lang may yer lum reek! :D xo
New subscriber here from Nicola Whites group. Beautiful music to go along with an absolutely phenomenal video. I’m really excited I subscribed.
Thank you so much! So glad you found our channel! Wshing you all the very best of the season! :D
At or about 20:22 there is what appears to be a question mark exposed in the vine covered window. As if to offer no answers to a traveler’s query!
Videos such as your are invaluable for folks planning a trip to unfamiliar lands. The adventures that lead one off the beaten path feel more representative than places designed for the casual tourist. Love the respectful exploration and bits of history sprinkled throughout!
I completely missed it, Nicole saw it and so did you and a few others! I agree its kinda appropriate! So many questions I'd love to find answers to about this place! That's really great to hear - so many amazing things to see and places to visit, though as you say, some tucked away and hard to find, Thank you so much! :D
Is a real beautifull place and very sad sería distiraiting like that.
It is such a wonderful place - it would have looked incredible before the decay - yes, very sad to see the place left to go this way.
Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
Yes it’s an old butler, Belfast sink, Nicole’s right! They used to reuse them as water feeders for domestic animals
Thank you so much! Its a pity that one was broken - I think they're making a bit of a come back! Many thanks! :D
Sometimes it’s worth metal detecting the roots of old trees. You never know what was there when they first burst out of their seeds.
Interesting! Nicole loves having a poke around in the roots, but a metal detector would certainly make that easier! Hmm! We may have to look into that! Thank you so much! :D
@@scottishmudlarking Not sure about your gold deposits in Fife, but here in Aus' Ive heard of people finding gold nuggets in the root systems of fallen trees by using a metal detector. Good luck !
@@stevenorwood8075 Oh! That would be amazing... oddly enough, I read recently that a the first commercial gold mine recently opened in Scotland! Very many thanks!
Lordy, Lordy that is some beautiful forest. The fog adds to the mystique. The sunken hole aka "hermit house" reminds me of crypts in the old south (US). It was a beautiful place in it's day. Mary Crawford sounds like an amazing woman. I bet she is a kind ghost if your not up to mischief. Wrong woods for Winnie the Pooh...
I say it so often, but we are so lucky to have places like this so nearby us! That sunken hole is a mystery - it has a shape, which suggests intent, but what that intent meant is bewildering... Interesting, I'll have a look at those crypts. I agree, if her presence is here, it is in the life of the place, the sound of the birds and the wind in the trees... having said that, she was not a person to get on the wrong side off in life, thoughtful and kind to the voiceless, but a strong person. Love the Pooh ref! We'll have to search out a 100 acre wood for that portly lovable wee thing! Thank you so much! :D

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 🥳
Congrats on the subs guys, and what a great video great video GREAT VIDEO. Am l right when the roof is removed you pay less taxes? The Leslie castle l think was similar. No larking but what history. Cheers 🇦🇺........
Thank you so much! We're so greatful for the support! That is very kind - your comment put big smiles on our faces!
Yes, you are right... taking a roof off a building made it exempt it from tax - post WWII tax laws accelerated the practice, but it had been happening or some time. By 1968, law demanded that permissions had to be obtained, whereas before that, it was far more common... It is still an issue to date! It is such a loss. You are spot on regards Leslie Castle, and it is a fantastic example of excellent restoration - it was in a terrible state.
We'll get back to the shores for a bit of larking, I promise! :D
Thank you so much!
@@scottishmudlarking Hi again guys I would like to thank you for remaining on the Leslie castle 🏰 I googled it and found heaps. Cheers 🇦🇺........
@@rogerleslie4282 Excellent! Thank you so much! :D
Very interesting - just incredible how transitory we really are - all that ambition, those dreams & money invested in such a huge edifice, yet within a couple of generations, Nature is reclaiming her domain. Would be great to don hard hats, with the necessary permissions and have a good explore & rummage around, to record what remains before it falls down. Thanks for sharing a fascinating story. 👍🐾🦘🎅
That's a very nice way to put it... :D I agree, it would be great to have a good look around inside... Though, as you say, with some protection and permission. Its quite sad that, it seems, there is very little remaining from the house, some documentary materials are in Glasgow university archives, but most, if not all, of the interiors were stripped out - it would have been great if someone had been of the mind to fully document the building before that took place... It would still be interesting to get in and take account of the place now! Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed the video! :D
was at primary with Michael and thomas from the priory mid 60,s
Thank you so much... it must have been amazing in its day, what a place to grow up!! best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
, @@scottishmudlarking, i remember we had a class visit there one afternoon , there was a miniature railway that we all had a shot on sitting astride the mini coaches , can,t recall much else , mind you it was 54/55 years ago now !!
In the woods there is also the family mausoleum
Thanks so much! We must visit there again :) It's been so long! And go to the mausoleum this time around !
Maybe kennels in the bottom.of the doo coot!?
Lovely video by the way. ☺
I think you are probably right about that - they look about that size... Fairly recent too by the look of the wood. Thank you so much! :D
Very many thanks! :D So glad you enjoyed it!
Job well done but for some reason it seemed foreboding .
Thank you so much! The building itself is wonderful, though it does have an air of mystery about it!

The reason those are ruins is because of the over taxation bye the British government after WWII. Inheritance tax is one of the worst inventions of man.
Quite so, Ninfa. It drags everything into mediocrity and destruction.
It seems, with this property, that damp started the process of abandonment. A lot of money had been spent to prevent the decay in the mid 1960s, though it had failed. When it was inherited, no further attempts were made to prevent the buildings decay - by the early 70s (I'd love to find out what happened in those few years), the choice was made to abandon the building and remove the roof, such a shame, and as you say, the heavy tax bill certainly helped persuade the owners to make that choice.
Since then Historic Scotland have prevented the destruction of what is left - as that is currently at the heart of an ongoing legal issue, I cannot shed any light on what the future might hold for the Priory. We hope that some arrangement can be made between the owners and Historic Scotland, its an amazing and important piece of Scotland's architectural history.
Thank you so much! :D
We myss bricks.
Happy New Year! Wishing you a very healthy and happy 2021! :D
it is a shame beautiful testaments to architecture and history are left to decay because of stupid government taxes and laws!
It really is... There surely must be a better way!
Thank you so much... Wishing you a healthy happy 2021! :D
I prefer “bat houses” over “doo coots”.
Oh! I love walking at night in summer and watching all the bats darting about - I think we had one living in our roof a few years ago! :D Thank you so much! :D
