- Still struggling to turn scales into actual music? This Jaco Pastorius bass lick might help everything finally click.
Yet another gem from Jaco’s “Modern Electric Bass” video with Jerry Jemmott, this lick has some really clear and tasty examples of how to create tension and release in a scale.
When we first learn scales, it’s kinda like having a vocabulary list but not knowing which words are nouns, verbs, or adjectives. Studying these patterns of tension and release will help get you more fluent in a scale so you can actually have fun and express yourself!

"And you feel relaxation, partly because I stopped singing..." Okay, that's why you play (and teach) Bass! 😁
Thank you, Josh, for a brilliant analysis of how to play chord tones on the strong beats! There is enough material there for hours of practice and exploration!
Hey Josh, I was going to "scale it back" but then I realized that was the "root" of my issues. Great video as always. Thanks for this melodic scale video, un-melodic would be annoying. Stay safe and take care. 👍😷♥️
Good ole jaco, please do covers of his live stuff, or better yet, punk jazz, since i can't jam to that anymore, i wanna see someone like you do it.
Very well thought out lesson! 👏🤩
Great lesson. Good job pulling the points of tension and resolution together as an important part of scale study.
Fantastic stuff Josh! More like this please....!
After a long time
Cool! New video!😊
You’re such a good teacher, thanks for this video
Gr8 tutorial. Ur Funny!
Exstanded(LoL!)! - Say, Josh, does this lick qualify as an example of using triad pairs? - Also, is your Rant Singing available as a PDF?🎸 - Thanks for this great video!
