I used cranberry juice to dye some Aida and it looks identical to this color pink. Love using natural dying elements from my kitchen...beet juice works but the color doesn't hold despite using salt, which yes, is important to set the color.

With Procion dye, the darker the color, the more salt you use to get deeper color. So salt quantity does matter. What you are doing is fine for your purposes. The puddling of dye on the bottom of the pan makes the blotches. when you turn it the puddles move and you loose the blotches. Your color will be smooth.

I have never had a problem with overdyed floss or fabric washing it after I’m done with stitching. I put vinegar in the water and no dye comes from floss or fabric when washing it. I never frame or finish my stitching with out washing it first . I don’t want oil stains from handling it why stitching it to remain on it once it is finished. I don’t want it to end up becoming deteriorated after all that work.
