This is what I think. They took his food probably cause they were starving and then after they ate the food (probably in one sitting cause they were starving) they then set their sights on him. They were waiting for him to come out of the tent at night so he wouldn't be able to see and it'd be easier to get him, they didn't want to go in his tent and risk getting shot cause they didn't know if he was carrying which is why they were trying to make him come out. Now the reason I think this is cause the first time they came to his tent they just took his food and really didn't do anything else, then afterwards they were after him specifically. Depending on how long these people have been out there without human food, They most likely ate the food,and started freaking out thinking that they weren't going to have anymore food after that bag, so they probably figured if they kill and eat him they'd have food for a while. I don't know, that first tent encounter where they just took the food and didn't mess with him, to them actively pursuing him makes me think that.

In my mind if they really live in the woods would be unlikely but they could have stashed a tracker in his gear somehow or more likely in mind, they are very very good at tracking. No idea why they followed / tracked him for so long or what they wanted. But I’ve seen comments before saying some ppl are more excited by the chase than killing. Having their victim in terror, running for their life etc. could be trying to get him off the land but they only stalked him according to police. Out of all the missing persons reports out there at least some of them have to be foul play if not a lot

They can’t have been ghosts though. What ghosts leaves tennis shoe prints wherever they go? I agree it’s a mystery how they kept up with the guy, which I’m sure he’s so glad he’s in excellent health and shape, but I don’t think they are ghosts. It could be they were professional trackers by following his own footsteps or they could have placed a tracking device on his stuff and it could explain how they always knew how to find his camping zone and, yes, I’m glad he escaped but it would have been interesting if they were able to locate him since he abandoned his gear.
