I would like to people to reach a consensus that Jack looks absolutely STUNNING in a Suit. (Edit: Thank you for the likes. Thank you contributing to the consensus)
As a french speaking person, the scene in the café had me dying, it was the epitome of the British cliché ! A gentleman with a tie and a suit, ordering with that particular accent and being refined XD
Ikr! Je vois déjà le serveur parler avec ces collèges genre " j'ai eu le docteur Watson aujourd'hui, j'te jure , tartan, tweed et tout. Puis parle pas français pour un sous, enfin il se débrouille, la même quoi "
My local library did this; they had a stand with wrapped up books to borrow. It was brilliant! More libraries should do this. It’s so fun when you don’t know what you’re getting!
Quote of the Day: “Where there’s a Heming-will, there’s a Heming-way.” These nuggets of wordplay should be documented. I want this to be the representation of my generation.
Jack, since Hemingway was such a big reason for you moving to Paris, it would be awesome to see a video of you recreating some of the walks and routes the he describes in 'A Moveable Feast'! Like spending a day as Hemingway in the 20s :)
Just wanted to say: I love the way you review books. You somehow clearly state your opinion and how you felt about it, while also never putting down other possible opinions. As a viewer, it somehow creates a unique balance between getting to know the book by yourself because what you say and still recognizing your opinion. Thank you so much for your videos!
"I'm going on a date.. No, not with an actual human being. No human beings were harmed in the making of this video" "Disturbing is kind of how I would describe my love life" Jack talks about his love life the same way he talks about A Little Life: a masterpiece, but you wouldn't want to recommend to anyone...
from a bookseller that sometimes gets to pick the blind date books: at least at our stores, it's not so much that we want to get rid of a book to but a book that we think people would like but not be the most hyped up! I tend to put my favorites on there lol. I agree though content warnings can be tricky, but our store let's anyone return the book if they already have it/are not interested. It's a fun concept but it can be difficult because everyone is so different!
Hemingway just didn't want to look for synonyms of words that would have described something worse than the actual word just to avoid repetitions, he wanted his writing to be as real and direct as life, which is why he repeats words constantly. He would actually go back and correct his writing by changing it to be like that, as in he would delete adverbs or adjective that were not that useful and got rid of synonyms. The concept is great, however, sometimes it's like reading something written by a child who has just learned a new word and has to put it in a context to show the teacher they understood it.
One of my literature professors had Welsh's book on a list of potential thesis subjects. I read it without any foreknowledge at all, and have still not fully recovered from the experience.
Jack please please make a playlist for books on a blind date, with your choice of the right key words (& trigger warnings!) of books you think we should just try.
yes!! appreciated by me as well! meant I could just skip those thirty seconds, rather than potentially lose an hour or two resetting my brain a trigger!
Having listened to the description Jack gave, I agree with him that it shouldn't have been in a "blind date" format, although the wrapping did give some warning.
I remember hearing someplace that old books aren't a good representation of how real people talked at the time, because dialogue in books wasn't meant to reflect that, unlike today when (at least in contemporary books, most fantasy/scifi book characters don't talk like normal people) realistic dialogue is often a requirement.
What a coincidence! I just bought a wrapped book just like these in a book store, or should I say, had a blind date with a book a couple of days ago. I turned out to be the White Nights by Dostoyevski which is a novella from his early ages and about a stargazer whom I resonated so much with. It was such an interesting and fruitful date that proved me that I should not be attracted to the looks but the soul of a book.
Jack, I would love it if you could do a video on reading tips. How to read more, how to get the most out of what your’re reading, things like that. Love you so muchhh thanks for another video
Ohhh so excited for this one!! I have seen bookstores selling wraped books to read them in a coffee table without knowing anything about them and really wanted to try this out. Really want to see your experience
That fit is amaaaaazing perfect perfect perfect. Also I agree with what you said about how it seems like blind date books are the books they can’t sell and they don’t put vetted and good books in there. But these two were great. I love this video, thank you!
I guessed A Farewell to Arms!! When you read the description I knew it straight away. That's so cool you picked that one I really want to read A Moveable Feast. Love your videos Jack! I've been getting back into reading lately and your videos have inspired me and help me find good books. Keep up the good work. Loved the suit and another Dark Academia vid please! 🙏
I bought a book like this from a local second-hand store a few years ago. It was wrapped in butcher's paper and twine with the description "War, Politics and Love" written on the front. Well I couldn't resist...sadly it was Fall of Giant by Ken Follett, a book I already owned and loved.
This video is top notch oh my goodness. Looking cool in a suit. Great concept, I've always wanted to see people actually opening and reading the Blind Date With A Book. Right away I laughed SO HARD at the "an avocaaado... faaanks" energy. The MONTAGES, OMG. So good. Flexing French skills. The hilarious wild story about breaking into the loch ness monster museum that in itself sounds like something that would happen in a book, delightful. All the suggestive jokes. And the surprises of how the books actually turned out, I could hear you talk about books for hours you make such an art of it, I actually think there's 3 separate book hobbies: reading books, buying books, and listening to Jack talk about books.
Hi Jack! I found out today that one of my city's bookstores also has this blind date thing and I was super excited to buy one of the books because I loved this video. I got a book by Susan Glaspell (I don't know the English title, but the Italian one can be roughly translated to "A female-only jury") and I'm really intrigued by the summary. I hope you are doing well, your videos always make my day better ❤
My absolute ✨dream✨ would be if Jack did a video on Savannah Brown’s works, maybe comparing her first poetry book and novel with her second of each. She is my favorite💕
What puts me off doing this is that the description raises expectations and ideas about the book. I prefer going blind into books, which is much more fun. I am guilty of being a huge cover buyer and also forgetting what books I added to my wish list are about. I also never ever read a blurb or synopsis
sir i might be falling in love with you. love a gentlemen who treats his books right!! though i am still quite disappointed with the way you "rate" your books? like hello? they arent just THINGS? Books are the moment.
My mum is an avid reader and me and my brother got her a couple of books from the Blind Date With A Book website a few years ago for mother's day. She loved it! Even though she said one of the books was kinda average, she loved the experience of reading the themes, opening up the brown paper, and reading something she probably wouldn't have picked for herself. She got really excited by it bless her loool
Dear Jack, Hi! i discovered your channel last year and it is the best discovery of the year. I can safely say that watching your videos it is my kind of self-care in the bad days. Nice video! I do personally love how you explore fiction (I normally consume fantasy, either YA or adult) and, your analysis on the style and the themes treated in the book you read are so on point. I must say, you have awaken my need to read Hemingway once again. As for this video, I must say that I always envy the people who find the date with a book type of boos but I must say that I am terrified of finding a book that I already own... I think that part where Heminghway repeats the word "road", expresses how the chracter is put on alert because of the war context. Like, I imagine that in that situation you would just focus on the concrete things like, the troops coming, the road, hiding, the river. It would be weird to use a metaphorical language, it's something that can only be done by a narrator from an outside point of view. I haven't read the book, it's just what comes to my mind.
jackary the music is so funny for some reason lmao it doesn't fit the vibe of your fancy suit at all but also just wanna say i'm so proud of you for your channel blowing up the last few months! i bet you'll hit 1mil before this year's halfway mark!
When I saw the thumbnail I was just SO sure that those books weren't the ones he chose lol. "Heartwarming" and "friendship"? No. "Disturbing" and "blackest humor"? More like it.
Maybe you could also do a day out, or cozy day in (blankets, tea and all that), with a friend combined with blind date book swap where you bring a book for her/him/them and vice versa. One day to read it, you can't know beforehand what book you'll get, have to swap back at the end of the day :) For some weird reason I woke up in the middle of the night, a few days ago, with this idea. Dream magic, now you have to think about it :D
Loved this idea and video. You seem so happy and comfortable with the choices you’ve made in life, which is so wonderful. Listening to you speak about books is beautiful. I’ve actually went to Ernest Hemingway’s home in Florida, and it was beautiful and simple and full of cats. Glad you were able to have fun reading these.
