Most people would probably assume they're wax lined on the inside, you know, like a milk carton.
@@ZombieBarioth wax, or at least a thin plastic lining that uses substantially less plastic than a standard bottle, like a plastic bag having it's shape supported by the paper. Wouldn't be ideal if it was a plastic lining but at least it would be an improvement over the a hole design.
@@whitehuayra Waxed paper actually can hold liquids, but the permanence isn't great. So, the way these bottles SHOULD work is a thin plastic sealing liner rather than the big plastic bottle inside the paper casing.

The sites are still not profitable, so if you have an issue with ads, I'll tell ya UA-cam Premium works a treat, and a great deal of YTers have said the revenue from YTP is way better than Ad revenue.

The worst one I’ve personally seen is a milk brand which is labelled in large letters “lacto free” and advertised as being better due to lack of lactose HOWEVER it says on the back that it is in fact NOT lactose free but just has less lactose than usual. People who are badly lactose intolerant could die from this!
No, you see what they mean is you pay for the milk but get the lactose free! Aren't our corporate overlords good to us?

People that badly lactose intolerant shouldn't drink milk since its very difficult to remove all trace amounts of lactose from milk. I drink those lactose "free"(with trace amounts) milks and they don't obliterate me personally. And I'm prettyy lactose intolerant.
Lactose free milk seems like a scam anyway. They aren't removing the lactose, they just pump it full of the enzyme the body uses to digest it.
Truly Lactose intolerant people still cannot drink it.

The reason why I only ever purchase squeezable tubes of things like toothpaste and cosmetics - I use a tube squeezer. I squeeze every last drop out of the tube.
If I can cut it open, there is more inside to scrape out as well!
I just squash it down with the handle of my hairbrush against the bathroom bench.

@@chaoticneutral6288 They do, although, you can get a dowel for less, and if you're looking for a few inches, you might not even have to pay for it. You can then just wrap the tube around it until you've got basically all the paste out. If you're cheap, you probably could at that point cut the back of the tube and get the last little bit. But, in all honesty, the tube squeezer gets nearly all of it.
My university gives us free access to all of the materials we need. And yet, I still sometimes just pirate it, because sometimes they'll give you it on a website that will time you out and lose your page, or make you login every few hours. It's infuriating and not what you want when you're trying to study. Quick tip though. If you've pirated a copy of your professors book, don't share your screen on Zoom to show him an extract you're talking about. Not that I ever did that.....

@@irissupercoolsy I don't know if you can print them. I study distance. It's a masters though, so I'm not sure if they do it with undergrads. There's a big movement in education now for them to not use any materials that cost money. They don't usually send an entire book (unless it's open access), usually just the relevant chapter or article. Sometimes you have to go through a third-party website and log in via your university account, so they've obviously paid for a licence so the students don't have to buy it. Call me old fashioned, but that's the least I'd expect when I'm giving them over 10 grand.
@@joepiekl Uni Librarian here - it's the publishers. They won't let us make it available, and some of them charge thousands of pounds for access to one ebook. We really want to make it available but we can't. The publishers want to sell it to students directly and do everything they can to drag their feet so that libraries can't give good access.
@@lilaclurva1 I don't doubt it. But then that really comes down to the course developers choosing materials that are affordable, and let's be honest, a lot of them don't care because they're not paying. Frankly, if I was paying $50k a year for tuition, I'd expect that to cover the cost of the learning materials as a minimum. I wonder how many universities would continue to use ridiculously expensive books if they were the ones footing the bill.
My university's library kept copies of the textbooks for every class, and the scanner was free
I think UA-camrs putting a progress bar on their ads is brilliant. I would never ever in my life use it to be able to skip the ad to 2 seconds from the end so that I don’t miss the actual content but skip the advertisement

I just use SponsorBlock. Automatically skips over the sponsorship segments in any video in its database.
There's a Chrome extension called "Sponsor Block" that can skip over those ads inside videos.
It works by having people mark the ads, so those progress bars help even more.
Keep in mind that if you don't want to watch, you can skip and UA-cam often times has a histogram that shows when people skipped to, so you don't even need to work that hard to skip the ads if you want to. So, they might as well put the progress bar up, and annoy fewer people.
As a Brazilian living in Britain, I've learnt (more confirmed) that consumer laws in Brazil are invaluably stronger. Wording in products, goods quality and service performance are strictly legislated. We have a wonderful org called Procon which makes it very easy and FREE to complain (and win) when you're screwed by a company. Here in the UK there are basically zero regulations and the means to complain are convoluted and designed to make you let go of your rights.
That's actually really nice. I wish more countries could take this aspect from Brazil.

@@oakstrong1 We literally have the ASA, CAP, and Ombudsmen who you can complain to very easily and for free. The problem is we as a nation are content with just grumbling and having a whinge to our peers, waiting for the annoyance to disappear on its own, rather than actually seeking legal action and getting the problem solved.
It’s stupidly ironic how immediately after Evan says “stop pumping ads everywhere” I got an unskippable ad. And it was, unsurprisingly, the same company that’s been dogging me for months to buy their product, a “cheap” phone plan that doesn’t even cover the state I live in.
I've noticed corporations are cramming ads everywhere they can get away with and rarely are we given any compensation for the extra ads being shoved in our faces. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by ad supported content, but when ads invade spaces that were previously ad-free and I am not receiving any extra value for having to tolerate them, I see it as theft.

@@Phiyedough When you prepay for gas and don't use the full amount it either gets credited back to your card automatically or you go back to the till for your change (if it was cash). That's how you get the final receipt, too. Very common even in places where you pump your own gas.

Actually in Oregon the law isn't that it's illegal to pump your own gas. It's actually illegal for the attendant to let you pump your own.

The most annoying advertisements I saw at my gap year in China weren't the handles inside busses having ads on every single one of them, or the screens showing ads instead what the next stops are, or that one extremely large ad display at the subway tunnel so you couls watch the ad through the windows for a several seconds, nor actors/actresses and cartoon characters doing ads within the TV show or film. It was those monitors that showed ads 24/7 at private apartment buildings where normal people lived.
For some of those ads I was actually considering taking pictures and sending them to my former media and product design teachers because I was so baffled how shamelessly they were displayed. And all of those things in a country that calls itself "socialistic" 😅😅😅
Did you have a tv? That post about the tv ads on start up is so true. I’ll turn my tv on in my classroom and have to wait for 3 ads before I can use the dvd player. If you leave it on long enough, it goes into a “screen saver” like mode, 100% ads (those are usually silent)…. But sometimes I will forget to turn the tv off before bed and then it will change over from hdmi input and restart and I will wake up to an ad blaring at 3am.
No need to make me sad that China isn't actually socialist :(

I watched UA-cam on my sister's TV while dogsitting recently. Adverts literally every five minutes on a 20 minute video. I don't know how people live without adblock.
That price changing is the same on eBay. Was looking for a cooker, they introduced a 20% voucher and suddenly the cooker was 20% dearer.

The word you're looking for is "20% more expensive". Plus it needs to be 25% more expensive for it to equal out. But, even getting it at 4% off when they said 20% off still sucks.

@@evan Nah this happened on mine on Windows 10. I don't know if it still does it, because I switched to Mac shortly after. They put them all under some sort of Microsoft Games umbrella that they wanted you to subscribe to to get them ad-free.
And so my mom asked me to install on her computer a Hoyle card game CD she bought way back around 2005. Still works and is ad free (the resolution is crap but it's just cards.)
Alternatively, a real deck of playing cards is like two bucks.
Related to increasing the prices before sales: In Denmark a couple of years ago it was discovered that an electronics store was raising their prices before blackfriday so that on the day the "on sale" prices were basically their ordinary ones, they got so much sh*t for it but i can not remember if there was any legal aftermath
In the UK there is a law that to prevent fake Sale prices, the product must have been offered at the "before" price for a certain length of time.
There is an EU law now that says that sales must be calculated from the lowest price of the last 30 days.

I keep getting annoyed by the new 'old' kitkat ad, that tells me they're 'recycling' a old advert because they're now using sightly less plastic. If they really wanted to help the environment they could use the old foil and paper wrappers from when the ad was first one. (Pretty sure it's only less plastic because they've shrunk the chocolate bar).
Kit Kats are so tiny now, they aren't even worth buying.
Don't buy Kit Kat in the first place, because otherwise you're supporting Nestle

@Alfonso La Pulce At the time, this was just focused on movie piracy. The idea was that piracy is theft, as it is taking something that you hadn't paid for.
There was a great spoof of it, I believe it was on the British version of IT crowd. :D
@@zoeadams2635 Ashens has a good video on anti-piracy measures, and points out that equating two different things (theft and piracy) is a flawed approach as people can then justify piracy by saying "Well it's obviously not the same as stealing a little old ladies handbag, so this advert is just talking bollocks." Oh, and the music in that advert was used illegally, so yeah. Pirate all you want, even the anti-piracy organisations are at it.

Who buys one of those big bags of crisps to share? You buy it for yourself to pig out on while watching "guilty pleasure" tv.
Using a bluetooth headset? Ahh, the convenience of another device to charge, with non-user-replace batteries, where you can't use the mic and listen to high quality audio at the same time, nor change the DAC, nor change the microphone, are not guaranteed to be able to use while charging (extra fun at the end of the day), not being able to quickly change what device you are listening to/from - yup, totally better than a simple TRRS.
Oh, and dongles are a horrible idea for mobile devices with a single usb-port, since that basically is "oh, that main data and charging port? Let's put a mechanical load on it in a situation where you move around so you make sure the mechanical stresses always are there in exaggerated forms" (and don't get me started on "oh, your phone battery is running low at the end of a day of music listening - too bad that charging port can't be connected to the power bank while listening to music").

@@evan Even when I've borrowed BT-headphones in the 500€ range I've run into those most of those issues - the short battery life (still an extra device to charge) and the no-listen-while-charging disappears in the 80€+ range.
But the rest of the issues persist even in the way-overpriced-for-quality price ranges.
(Fun thing really, most BT headphones are being soundly beaten by a 50€ pair of wired (and once you hit 350€ wired then BT is not even getting close unless you start looking in the 1k€+ range))
But I'll bite, what BT-headphones have you met that allows you to listen to an opera in acceptable quality while meanwhile having a conversation with a friend in the same headset? (This for all of when cooking, in a roadway tunnel, and when out in heavy winds?)

I'm a dinosaur. I still buy CDs. Often I get the MP3s for free with the sale otherwise I make them myself, but I'm in control. And usually it's not even more expensive.

To share my own experience, the whole thing with removed content from digital libraries is the policy of the one who owns the copyrights, not the streaming platform/digital library/etc. I used to have dragon age origins and alice madness returns on steam but when ea decided to take their gamess off platform (to promote their own platform, origin), they removed all the games from store and, their games were also removed from the libraries of ppl who had purchased the games. I remember one day feeling like playing amr again and then I was shocked to see it missing from my library.
When they remove it like that there should be some kind of refund, feels illegal for them to be able to just take it away like that. Wish it were illegal.
But they shouldn't have the right to take the product you've paid for.
Apparently Steam is removing games, and that really should be illegal. Xbox never removes games from _your_ library. They will remove it from the store, but you can still use it. Of course online functionality might be disabled, but offline should work. This should be the default.
In the UK - Steam can delist games so you can no longer buy it, but cannot legally remove your game, or your ability to play it (They can revoke the licence if you breach the rules) - however the multiplayer parts of a game can go offline (which might render the game unplayable)
Elsewhere rules vary and they can delist games and remove them if the local laws allow
@@Liggliluff Steam delists games. But if you have bought a game, you can still download it and launch it as normal.
Steam is actually pretty good to their users. Valve is the company that rightfully pointed out that Piracy is a service issue. They understand that if their users are being treated substantially worse then a pirate, that they will go pirate instead of spending money.

My fave adage lately has been “If you can’t hold it, you don’t own it.”
And sometimes even then you'll need to wipe or mod the software if you want to use off-brand refills, other file formats, or operate it in a way that would be useful to you (and seems reasonable) without subscribing to their cloud resources/services.

The worst "up to" conversational arithmetic fail I've heard this week was the tv commercial that claimed the product would result in "up to 0%" [bad thing]. UP TO ZERO PER CENT?! Please occasionally put someone in a marketing meeting who has at least a GCSE in Maths.
And many of my favourite YTers switch to a new filming location and a new outfit for sponsorship segments. Love it.

I found a lot of my music purshased from Amazon would vanish off my phone over time. So now when I buy trachs (which is becoming almost impossible) I move those tracks out of the Amazon folder as soon as they've downloaded.
You have to watch a minute of ads to see the web broadcast during emergency weather on my local news site. Like, tornado sirens are going off, but they really want me to go to Big Jims Honda dealership before I find out if my house is in the tornados path right?
A trick to (usually) see past the different sizes of packaging for stuff like chips or glue... check the listed weight or volume of product in the package, usually somewhere on the bottom edge of the front.
It might be in ounces, or milliliters, or grams, or whatever, but the unit of measurement is *usually* the same across all brands selling that type of product in that location.
Ignore how much packaging it has. I've seen breakfast cereal that's $2 more for the largest package, but it only has eight more ounces of cereal in a box that's two inches taller, an inch wider, and half an inch thicker.

The New York Dems got accused of gerrymandering and the Feds redrew our congressional and state senate maps (meanwhile we have gerrymandered districts in the Assembly for the Republicans and the courts didn’t touch those🤦). 16:20 Evan, in every house I lived in when I lived in Australia, there was a laundry room. I now live in a neat, compact townhouse in New Zealand and my laundry situation is like yours- a cupboard next to the kitchen... and I love it. Every laundry room I've ever encountered was just a space to hoard junk.
In my country they sell yoghurts with paper wrap around Im like wtf, when you wash the cup, it gets wet and you still have to rip it off and separate into plastic and paper bin.
They do it here too, but the plastic is so thin that there would be full of dents before it gets into the store. The paper (it's a thick paper) works as protection and I think it does a good job.
On the piracy topic. Usually if it's a video game, i pirate it first to check if my pc can run it with my current specs. If its unable to run it, I will delete it and not buy the actual game. It saves me from wasting money on games which I can't even play.
Movies? ..Not so much. I think people should just watch/buy movies. Theres no 'test' like with videogames, and movies NEED the view count and the money to judge if they should invest in making a sequel.
2:44 There's about half a dozen takeaways with suspiciously similar menus and the same address on my local delivery apps. They have a near-permanent "40% off £40" deal going. You think "that sounds cool, I'll grab the set meal and throw in some extras to make up the spend". Then you see that the set meal is about twice as much as you were expecting.

So what do you use instead of chrome? If you're gonna tell people to stop using something you should recommend an alternative because every other option I've used so far has been crap.
Depends what you mean by crap... Chrome is no longer the fastest browser- that's Edge, but if you want secure you could look at de-Googled chromium or Waterfox (64-bit Firefox).
I use safari. It’s fast, clean, and the most energy-efficient browser. It has amazing features if you also use iPhone and Mac OS and I love reader mode for shitty sites with annoying ads.
Firefox also has a big place in my heart.
i'm not them but ungoogled-chromium has all the things chrome does but without the nonsense and it's pretty good
@@evan I think most people that use Chrome use a Windows pc... Why would you use Chrome on a mac?
Safari is problematic too. The IRS website doesn't work properly on safari, for one. And I switched from Firefox to chrome because it was such garbage.
Okay but the "You must win this game of Pong" is kind of stellar in a chaotic evil sort of way!
I feel with tv's and a lot of electronics some people will show up to a shop to look around at what they have and I guess if you get a pos salesman, they could convince you to get a tv you later realise is trash. Sometimes its understandable to do your research in the actual store but yeah, sometimes it does backfire.

I feel like many of these could be easy win law suits for practicing lawyers.
“Don’t use the tv’s OS” doesn’t make sense to me. The tv comes with it installed, it can’t be overwritten that I know of and anything plugged into it will always be secondary when it boots up.
I loathe my recent Samsung tv OS. They’ve added so much garbage it’s the classic ‘hit the sweet spot of design and then fucked it all up again in an effort to justify someone’s paycheque’. Bloated, full of useless undeletable and unwanted crap, a million options to scroll through before hitting the settings you’re likely to want, stupid app-specific buttons on the remote that - when bumped by accident - cancel whatever you’re doing to load the stupid app. Ugh.
My comment was essentially “buy an Apple TV”
The OS is smooth and intuitive and has features that work super well with iPhones
@@evan I googled it a bit then and have again now. It feels like it's something I'd still have to scroll through my current TV's hub to find and use each time I turned it on but... I haven't managed to find proof of that feeling. I guess I'll keep looking for videos showing how it works before buying. Cheers. Maybe one day I will have a much happier experience thanks to you. :)

I recently ran into this kind of thing after buying a new car, only to find out later that some features are locked behind a paywall... Some of which are one off payment (ok, I guess) but others are subscription based ones WTF!

This semester we're using English books for some modules and all of them have a huge batch on them saying "international student version" and on the inside it says that you're forbidden to bring it out of the country it has been exported to. Reason: US version is a lot more expensive (I forgot how much exactly but a lot)
Also we get them for three in our uni's library, like isn't that what you pay fees for (not that you really pay any in Germany...)
The International Editions I've used simply say "not for sale in the US", not that you cannot ship it elsewhere. In any case, US students are really getting screwed over on that one. On the bright side, the ban on sale in the US isn't actually enforceable according to my research, so students in the US can (and should) use grey-market international copies where available.

Evan, that pingpong thing is a series! I am forgetting the other ones, i think some were horrible scroll options, volume options, more unsubscribe/close options, and i saw one recently that was phone numbers! Essentially, one was a random number generator that said "Is this your number?" and you had to say no until it showed your number. Another you had to go up 1 diget at a time, but like, in single units, so to get the number 100 up took 100 hundreds clicks, so a 7-8 didget number would be 7-8 thousand clicks. There were so many! So yeah, thankfully not real, just sorta memes of how awful things could be haha

Innisfree is a Korean brand and I wonder if it’s to do with recycling. Maybe because you can recycle the paper then the bottle where’s some of the shrink wrap on the bottles is not recyclable as it’s a soft plastic.

In the UK we have flashbacks to the piracy ads we had to watch before every video we put on so it was drilled into us that piracy is bad hence the dramatic responses 😂

If purchases can be stolen by a supplier then piracy is not a crime against that supplier but simply recovering stolen property!

Flushable wipes don’t end up in the Thames. Search for the videos online of the massive sewer backups in London. They have to bring heavy equipment down there to scoop that stuff up and take it away. It’s crazy!
3.15 Sony patented a TV that stops showing adverts only when you stand up and say the brand name out loud. 🤔 So they are penalising those with mobility issues (unable to stand) and speach impediments? No more Sony products for me!
They havn't made such a TV yet though, at least.
There are lots and lots of patents for lots of stupid things, whether or not they exist, or will ever be made.
(13:50) That's why I think Microsoft does it better, and it really should be a legal requirement. If you purchase a digital product that you "own" (i.e. you don't pay anything to use it as much as you want), that product should never be made unavailable to you as long as the service is running. If the service shuts down, oh well. But if the license runs out, they should still be required to offer you the product ... as said, this is how it works on Xbox for example. If a license runs out, you can still use it, and still download it again, but only with the account you purchased it with.
Regarding buying movies... YES! DVDs are the way to go. Old school, baby!
