As a technician I've learned from experience, always do a visual and try the simple things first. some people would have dived into tearing apart the carb, when all they needed was 5 minutes to clean it. Good job!

Thanks. That did it for me too. Like you I am really careful about fuel cleanliness and with not a speck on the fuel pick-up didn’t suspect a blocked jet. On that air passage, there is a very thin slot the air has to get through….just after the bit you showed. Washed out the black plastic assembly and off she went. Cheers.

Thank you for the advice! I'm having the exact same problem with my little guy. I'm headed out to the workshop right now to give this a shot. I'll give you an update my friend! Thank you!

Good luck. That was 3 years ago and the saw is still working fine. I did buy a 2nd Styhl so that one isn't used as much.

@@EdwardHomerVIC it is running like a raped ape!! That screen was completely clogged. I wire brushed it off and blew off the rest of the muffler and it's running GREAT!! Thank you very much!!
*Edit* I did get a Farm Boss last year and it's an awesome saw! Super powerful and makes short work of firewood and trees.

By the way, these little Stihl saws, like the MS170 and MS180, are notorious for blocked spark arrestors. If your saw just doesn't run right check it: you'll find it under a cover on the muffler. Oil often blocks it. Wire brush it vigorously , then reinstall it. I run my saw without the spark arrestor in the fall, winter and spring, then put it back for summer use. Easy.

Yes I should have mentioned that but the point is this was such an easy fix.

An easy way to clean the spark arrestor is to hit it with a torch flame to burn off the carbon and then a gentle brush to get the ash out and it's nice and clean!

hi thanks for your quick reply,I took it to my local workshop for mowers and chainsaws and he tried to fix it by adjusting the fuel mix screw, and yes it runs a lot better,i already cleaned the suggested parts before

Great video. It's pronounced "Shtill", by the way. "Steel" is something that American dealers started saying fairly recently. They think it sounds more masculine, but Andreas Stihl disagrees.

When I undid the two nuts holding the black air filter holder on, it wasn't that tight. I think the carb was getting air around the back through a tiny gap. Putting it back on and tightening it up got it screaming again!

these little 170's are like a rabid beaver on steroids! The little black grated cup comes out of mine, I cleaned it, but think some sawdust got up into the carb.,. will honker through this tank of fuel and see what happens. Thanks for sharing!

@@EdwardHomerVIC I just saw (pun intended) local advertising for a newer Stihl (MSA120CBG) Battery Operated saw advertised locally at $239 . Everything is going to battery - hopefully battery is included at the one price. I am looking at full conversion with all - weed eater, saw, blower.. I was quite impressed with the Milwaukie blowers sheer force (problem is it only BLOWS and does Not SUCK! lol) -- seriously - not sure on the battery life with that one..

I don't have any fancy answers for you. How old is the saw? Maybe someone here can help. Failing that look for a forum on line. Hope you get it started.

Check the compression - it should be at least 120psi - if it's too low it won't start ever.

Sgouldn't. Lots of guys take the screen out. It's a spark arrester.

my 170 starts ok but as soon i pull on throttle it wants to stall especially if i do that a normal speed, it,s only a couple years old and not doing much work but regular , air filter is clean , is there another filter, on carburator ? thanks

    • @EdwardHomerVIC
      @EdwardHomerVIC  6 років тому

I'm assuming you checked out my video where I clean out the plastic grill over the carb intake and that worked for me. The other option before you tear the carb apart and clean jets is to look at the spark arrest screen located behind the muffler. They can become glogged and effect performance. Be advised, when I took my muffler off I broke one of the studs and stripped the other. Easy to replace and fix. good luck.

I've gone through everything got it clean new filter etc. still bogging. I think it was the gas pick up hose got soft over time and when I hit the throttle it collapses. New hose, now it works great. Maybe the ethanol in newer gas does that, I'm not sure. I run premium gas that is not supposed to have ethanol but it is sneaking in even at the higher octane levels. I'm an occasional user so the saw sits a lot. Will try running pre-mixed gas, research on the net says Aspen is best, even if the price is kinda stupid.
