How to adjust a chainsaw that dies (bogs down) when cutting!!! (ECHO CS-345 carb tuning)

- Hey everyone!!!
A friend of mine just dropped off this Echo CS-345 chainsaw for me to adjust.
The problem: the saw bogs and dies down when under load.
The solution: a 1/8th turn (counter clockwise) of the H screw on the carburetor to richen up the fuel mixture.
I also lowered the idle slightly by turning the idle screw (T screw) slightly counter clockwise as well.
Hope this video helps!

Finally somebody Somebody who tells you what you need to know without all the bullshit. Thank you
I also had a saw that bogged down in the wood and a carb adjust did nothing. Ended up the fuel line snapped at the filter and it sucked up dirt and clogged the fuel inlet screen! Good video Dave, keep them coming!
Good to know Ken! Cheers!
Love the channel Dave! I recently started my next chapter as a small engine mechanic about a year or so ago and I love messing with saws. Re-tuning the carb on a saw is so satisfying!
Hey there! Thanks for the kind words. I agree... although I work on more trimmers than anything, saws are the most rewarding.
Hope to see you back soon!
Like many others said chain sharpness and temperature play a role. That is why they are adjustable. Great Info though. I actually learned to tune chainsaws and trimmers from Steve's small engine Saloon. I know you, Dave and others have done great tuning videos as well.
That’s awesome Brian. Always appreciate your feedback in the comments! Cheers!
It's nice that you have all these friends to give you all these jobs ..
No kidding! Once a friend hears you do tune ups, everyone finds out!
typed in chainsaw stalling while cutting, your video comes up first and its the exact same chainsaw I have, what are the chances! thanks for the video
Hey Dave!
Great job. The right adjustment on a carburator is extremly important! But it´s also very easy if you know, how to do it 😉
Greetings from germany, Stefan
Hmmm hi bro
Thanks Stefan!
@@DavesSmallEngines dude you said the high but you didn't say which way and how much???
Easy fix dave!! Thanks for sharing it with us!!
Thanks Jose!
That’s exactly how it’s done! Good job Dave!
How are you bro
Thank you Sir!
Awesome tip Dave! I was expecting something a bit more complex.
Cheers
Easy eh Ray?
I was expecting the something difficult as well.
Good job dave. In warmer air some engine like more fuel.
Thanks Nash!
I have a 1980’s homelite. It is still going strong. I brought it out and it does what this one is doing so far I have adjust hi about 3/4 of a turn and it seems to cut small 2-3” hardly bogging down except nearing the end and larger logs it boggs down and will die even if I pull it out and try to give it gas. It will start back up ok.
I had the fuel line replaced once long ago it does not seem like this. My question is. What could a large “richer” adjustment indicate?
Thanks. As you say, has to be adjusted often here in northern Québec as we go from +18c to -6 often during spring.
Keep the videos coming, you are doing a great job.
Thank you Michel!
Maybe if I keep coming back enough times I,ll remember this
Awesome video! straight to the point. thanks for sharing.
Wow, such a small detail can make such a big difference, well done Dave.
Thanks Ray!
Hmmm beo
It seems like it should have been adjusted rich for the colder weather already but maybe my thinking is wrong.
Great fix it is running great job there Young Man 😎👍👍😎
Hey Rob! Thank you!!!
@@DavesSmallEngines your welcome young man 😎
That's exactly what my Stihl 031AV is doing.
I think the chain needs sharpening. Even a little 30cc saw should cut better than that. My ms 181 would cut through that round pretty good.I used it to cut up some 12 inch limbs for my daughter a couple of years ago. Usually when I go from cold to warm I lean out the saw a tad because cold air does not hold as much gas vapor as warm air. Now, +15 is a lot warmer than -15 F.but it is still cold. It as 72 degrees F. Here, today and 44 here this morning. The lowest temp we had this past winter was about 20 degrees F.
Hey John - if I had a ripping chain on it would go into the stump better with the grain of the wood. Look at how it tosses the chips when I cross cut! I think the carb was off to start, I’m glad it’s sorted out now.
@@DavesSmallEngines Dave, it just looked like it was dull to me. My chains are sharp and will generally rip and crosscut pretty good. I have a few ripping chains for my mill and they will crosscut pretty good, too. Not as good as my 30 degree chains but a lot better than that Echo did. Then, again my saws are generally twice as big as it was. My 35 year old Poulan Super 25 Automatic Deluxe will make that Echo look like a toy, crosscut or ripping and it only has a 91 series Oregon chain on it ( 3/8 LP). If you want a saw to get a good tune on, try the Poulan 25SDA. Or the little MACs.
Hey John! I will check those out. I tried it again off camera and it was throwing some good chips again on a pine. I’m wondering if this maple is really hard and the cross cut along with the small chain makes it harder for the little saw.
@@DavesSmallEngines Dave, I do not really look at Mapel being a real hard wood. If you want hard wood, try hickory or live oak. They will throw spark off chains. I cut down a 24 inch maple a few years ago with my 455 Husky and it did not even break into a sweat. Hickory or water oak is a different story. Water oak is what Old Ironsides is made from and British cannon ball just bounced off of it. I guess they teach you about the Uss Constitution where you and Don live? My degree is in American History. It took me ten years and a war ( Vietnam) to get it. In case you did not know I am a Marine.
@@DavesSmallEngines ripping chains dot cut as well as standard 30 degree chains. They kind of chip at the wood instead of pulling noodles. They are used to provide a smoother surface on the milled lumber instead of speed of cutting.
Somebody needs to put a file to that chain 😂
Good job Dave thanks for sharing
Thanks Jeremy!
Excellent! Thanks for the help
It is running real lean
Can't really tell if you screwed clockwise or anit clockwise.
Sorry this dumb question. Which way do you turn that screw? In or out? Thx
In the description he said CCW 1/8 turn to enrich the mixture. On my Husqvarna 55, I would turn it OUT to enrich the mixture. It helps if you print out the manual for your particular saw, or other implement of destruction 😊
EDIT; Just checked my manual and OUT is correct. The needle controls the fuel - not the air, so OUT would allow more fuel into the mixture.
P.S. Not a dumb question, it's necessary knowledge.
Thank you for the clarification 👍
Great video and tip. Presume if you had a tachometer, once the saw was warm, you could fine tune the rpms for WOT (High), and idle (Low)?
For sure. That does not always tell the full story, though. I find it best to tach tune and then dive into the fine adjustments when I’m cutting. The idle.. well... that can be preference based too.
@@DavesSmallEngines Good to know. I do not have much experience with chain saws. Again, really enjoy the videos. Keep up the great work.
The problem is that virtually no chainsaws can be adjusted using a small screwdriver now days. However, you can buy a kit on Amazon that allows you to adjust the non-adjustable ones although a mechanic said it is illegal.
😂😂😂😂illegal 😂😂😂😂
What are laws made for? 😂
Which direction is "to the richer side" for that screw?
Rich is counter clockwise
Exactly my question. Left out the most important detail. Also cutting g against the grain will dull your chains. Carry on! Lol
How many turns out from seat do you think is a good starting point?
I have same problem whit ms180 but i dont have H and l on my carburator i will take carbureter kit and change. And see will that help
Sharpen that chain before cutting and tuning , you are not going to properly adjust a dull saw.
It is sharp - keep in mind cutting down on a stump is rip cutting!
you could tell it was lean right away when you first started it , RPM's where fluctuating , do you think that low speed might need to be a hair richer as well ?, nice saw 👍
It could be. Maybe just a hair. I’ll give it a try. It was responding quite nicely to my throttle input so I left it be!
I would say it's slightly on the lean side at idle. I typically adjust my idle screw most of the way out and get the saw to run off of the low needled alone and then set the idle screw once I like where it is at.
@@CodyJohnstonbaugh I will give that a try next time!
My Poulan 2150 won't start. Does the primer bulb have to be full of fuel? Right now it does not fill..so fuel line problem?
Hey Lookup! Sounds like a fuel delivery issue for sure. Could be several different things, check valves, fuel lines, filter, gummed up carb, etc. I would be digging in and cleaning things up!
what kind of adjustment driver do you need for a 400e husk varna chainsaw to adjust the carb.
Flat head screwdriver, just the same!
Hai, please help me,
When the chain saw tilted (to cut horizontally ) the machine stops. Why it so...
Sounds like the fuel filter is caught inside and preventing it from staying in the fuel!
@@DavesSmallEngines hoo... point is noted. Let me check that 👍
Did you turn it right or left as mine av tryed both ways and it still bogss
Right is lean, left is rich!
For high power we need to lose it ????
Dave Please see Honda gx35 brush cutter carburettor rebuild
I’m confused Malik, what do you mean?
Thing the chain is dull too!
Could use some work for sure!
Adjust in which direction sir???
Turn in to lean the mixture, turn out to richen.
left
Did not show if you adjusted it to the right or left.
1:56 it was briefly shown, to the left. I agree though it should have been stated, or shown more clearly. Or a graphic showing direction.
The chain seems big-time dull.
Rip cutting on a stump will do that. Notice cutting into the stump the chips will fly!
now you need to sharpen it
It’s sharp - cutting down into a stump with the grain of the wood is a rip cut - not a cross cut. Watch when I cut horizontally - the chips fly!
You didn't say which way you turned the screw.
briefly shown at 1:56 (left)
The chainsaw in your hands look like a toy
Big hands or a small saw... hmmmm
Doesn't take much for a saw to go out of adjustment
No kidding!!!
Sharpen that chain for the love of God
den där är färdig
I wish this auto translated!
Too many ads I did’t stick around
Do you have any tighter clothes? I don’t know that I can trust the advice from a man with such loose fitting clothes
You ought to hit the gym once in a while… work on those arms! Joking. Lol😅. Looking good thanks for sharing
Little toy
Cool eh?
Not cool, toy
