Great video. I lived in Manchester for many years and the changes have been astonishing. As others have pointed out, 550k is only the population of the bit that’s The City of Manchester - which is equivalent to a borough. Indeed quite a lot of your footage was actually taken outside ‘the city’ in Trafford and Salford which share sections of the urban centre. The true population is closer to 3 million. Tellingly the population stats for London always cite the ‘Greater London’ figure, but this same principle is almost never applied to the big regional cities - as though to minimise their status when compared to the capital.
I'm considering to move from central London to Manchester due to the renting mad cost, but the city looks really "empty", not lively, not great in terms of architecture and layout. I fear that I could fall in depression there.
@@LucaPhotographyLondon Manchester is culturally and socially very lively, it’s a very energetic city. Architecturally it’s a matter of taste I guess. The centre is a mix of 19th, 20th and 21st century buildings, with a lot of high rise being built at present. It is not conventionally beautiful - ‘gritty’ would describe it. If you are considering moving but not to the centre, research the better areas to live carefully. I lived there for 27 years and loved it - I visit whenever I can.
Thank you. We did end up capturing a lot of footage in Salford as we walked around without realizing it but not wanting to use all stock footage of the touristy city center of Manchester. - Josh & Kalie
@@expatseverywhereexplores Its to do with way our cities have evolved. When you visit the city centre in London you are actually in three cities and several boroughs, but you think of it all as just ‘London’. The historic City of London is actually tiny. Manchester’s centre in similar in that whole sections of the centre and inner areas are in Salford and the borough of Trafford.
My words exactly.
Manchester is a fantastic city. I spent a weekend there last summer. The weather was fine and the people were great too. I'm sorry some people have had a negative experience there, because it was all positive for me.
This vid just got recommended by the bots. I was born in Manchester and still live here. Your review is extremely accurate and very fair.
Geez, the bots are at it again! Thanks for sharing your take on the video.
I worked in that area for about 16 years. You missed the Docks by years it was a sea feed canal the Manchester Ship Canal and the start of the Bridgewater Canal in Worsley in a Coal and lion Stone mine with Orange coloured water
Thanks for sharing!
@expatseverywhereexplores Manchester was much rougher in the 1990s and early 2000s, there was even issues with some gun violence in certain districts. The Downtown/city centre has had millions of dollars pumped into it in investment to revitalise it, however although some areas have been gentrified there are many areas of high poverty and nearly half the citys districts are among the top 5% poorest and economically deprived of all neighbourhoods in the UK.
Great video-you covered most things, including city construction. Greater Manchester, though, is the metro area, with a population of 3 million. All the best. Mark
Some of the old brick mill buildings were called fireproof because of the iron supports and when trying to demolish them by burning the oil impregnated flooring it burnt but the structure was still safe
I find the people of Manchester the friendliest in the uk
Thanks for sharing.
I'm from Manchester and... fair enough. You got it about right. You either don't know, though, or didn't mention such gems as John Ryland's Library, Manchester Town Hall, World's first passenger railway (at Manchester Science and Industry Museum) or the beauty of Manchester Cathedral. Not to mention the Town Hall. Stunning building (I worked there for 2 years).
...Castlefield... Roman ruins.
Great video - good to have an insider's perspective - I would of said the suburbs are more suitable for families and the inner city is more suitable for young professionals.
Good call! Thanks, Nathan. - Josh & Kalie
And the suburbs are very integrated as well
You briefly visited and make a wildly inaccurate video. Manchester is a great city. I live here. The climate is mild and it is not always rainy. It is no more aggressive than any city with a population of 2.7 million.
Hi Sean, are you talking about opinions and impressions of the city or something factual that you are upset about. Like we said, our British friends all questioned why we were going to Manchester and what we found was pretty good. Good and great are obviously a matter of opinion. The city is definitely more aggressive in a subjective manner than other cities in the world we've been to. We've visited over 80 countries and well over 100 cities and it's certainly more subjectively aggressive. Objectively speaking, Greater Manchester ranks 3rd worst as far as crime rate. www.statista.com/statistics/866788/crime-rate-england-and-wales-by-region/
@@expatseverywhereexploresthat doesn’t include metropolitan London, which comes top. So are you saying that Manchester is more aggressive than London? Wtf 😂😂😂
How many people get shot and killed in America every year. Seems to be a great deal more than in England and of course Manchester. That's what I consider to be aggressive.Your English "friends" might be Arsenal fans like you. They are very jealous of the two great Manchester teams and therefore scathing of our boys.@@expatseverywhereexplores
As someone born and raised in Manchester it is undeniable that there are plenty of scrubs around looking to pick a fight, particularly if you're a solo male. You have to keep your wits about you and low key be on the lookout for potential trouble, which is something you don't necessarily feel if you visit other cities. Is it any more dangerous than central London? Well, there are 184 crimes per 100k people in Manchester, and 344 per 100k in Westminster (1 per 3 people) so you'd think not, but for "violent" crimes, the rate in Manchester is 65 to 51 in Westminister and an average of 34 in all other London boroughs, which is almost half that of MCR. People get used to it and see any criticism as unnecessary, but the truth is Manchester is a far more violent city than most in the UK. Residents are blind to it because they've lived with it their entire lives but it's about time they woke up to the fact that they don't have to, and encouraged the law to actually DO SOMETHING about it. My first reaction to this video was "oh f off, it's just a normal city". But when you put your local pride to the side and think about what's going on, it is very clear that there is a problem. Spice heads are everywhere, addicts are begging all the way up Market Street for a fix, teenage gangs in hoodies and masks are riding scooters around trying to snatch peoples phones and using angle grinders outside the Co-Op to take people's electric bikes. It feels normal when you're from Manchester, but it's far from normal to people who aren't.
@@expatseverywhereexploresIt is Lancashire Hot Pot. Lancaster is a city, Lancashire ls a county.
We have good memories of the university tour, the older parts of town, the neighborhoods..., but the airport... OMG! Crowded, understaffed, security way too strict, and to make matters worse: not so many flights to Porto. We missed our flight and that was a terrible end to our journey to Manchester. It probably would have been better if we watched a match live.
The airport now is back to pre-pandemic levels. Flew in and out of Manchester Airport two weeks ago and security took 10 minutes. The problem was that during Covid, the owners of Manchester airport got rid of a lot of its staff and once COVID ended, they needed to rehire a lot of positions.
@@colegriffin4142 , good to know it has gotten better.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Veronica. - Josh & Kalie
You two did a great video considering you don’t live there, it’s hard when you just visit but your video is awesome and really great. 🎉
Thanks so much! 😊 We always try our best to mix in the things we research, personal findings, talking to locals and foreigners living there to make a well-rounded video. - Josh & Kalie
Great video just a point a lot of the stuff shown was in Salford a city in its own right I was born in Manchester as was my late wife.
Thank you. Yes, you're absolutely right. As we walked around, we ended up filming a lot in Salford and getting footage there that we ended up using as opposed to just using stock footage of the city center in Manchester. - Josh & Kalie
You only quote the population of the City area. Greater Manchester has about 2.9 million now...There are 10 local authorities in the conurbation and the whole area has a Metro Mayor..Andy Burnham who leads The Greater Manchester Combined. Authority.
These are the City Population figures not Metro County Council figures
I’m always curious to hear the puritanical attitude which Americans often display towards alcohol consumption. It’s also curious to hear an American describing Manchester as being “rough”!
Having visited major cities in California and North Carolina, all of which have areas which are almost post-apocalyptic in comparison to anywhere in the UK, it is puzzling to hear Manchester described as rough by anyone.
Additionally, Manchester is incredible in spite of its weather - not because of it!
Love your videos and great content, thank you
Would you consider having a look at Rovinj or Split in Croatia?
Yes. Please take a look at Croatia. Thanks!
It's on the list for sure! We're going to plan something for Croatia soon. - Josh & Kalie
I'm not going to disagree that the city doesn't have a drink issue but that's most cities in the UK to be frank.
For kids in restaurants that really depends on where you go as some are obviously more family friendly than others.
Crime has been an issue here. There is no denying it but to be frank, it's better than it used to be 😅
It's my home and I'm staying here!
The Manchester climate is no different from most of England, there are far wetter cities in England than Manchester . You need to do your homework before you come out with ridiculous comments.
It’s always raining in Manchester
Are you joking! It rains here all the time 🙄
Guys, please stop complaining about every little mistake they might have made. Please give them the benefit of the doubt. I love the fact that they’ve made a video about Manchester. It’s a great city. Thanks for the upload guys. Very informative.
Thank you. We really liked Manchester and literally don't understand the hate from our London friends towards Manchester. - Josh
Great job, folks! Thanks, as always. 😊
Thank you, Seamus! We appreciate you watching over here. - Josh & Kalie
Manchester has a lot of professional UA-camrs, some of whom look for confrontation to make their content look good. If you walk around without a camera permanently on, you wouldn't get the angry confrontations you mentioned.
I am a proud Mancunian and lived in the area for 70 years, Your views are totally inaccurate. It is the greatest city in the world. Better if you don.t return and leave it to the Brits.
It's "the greatest city in the world" only if you haven't travelled the world. Let's be honest: it's a shithole, and this video is right about the aggressive culture. Gangs everywhere. Lived here all my life.
I wana move from the us to manchester 😩😩😩 1 day 🙏🏽
Children not out past 7PM…sign me up! Sounds perfect to me 😜
HAHA. you'll fit in just fine there. - Josh & Kalie
FEW hours north?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!
Driving ..yes sadly...Train just over 2 hrs thank God.
It’s interesting that you mention a hostile vibe coming from male passers by in Manchester; I had the exact same experience living in London, from Eastern European female passers by. They always made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe.
On a positive note, any Mancunians that I have ever met in my life have been very friendly and easy to talk to.
Your suggestion that Manchester has a population of @ half a million is misleading. Manchester has a sprawling conurbation, with aome areas aomewhat cheaper than the city and some areas to the south somewhat expensive. But really you have to think of Manchester in terms of the conurbation as people do with London and the Manchester conurbation has a population nearer to 5m
Thanks, Steve. We choose to talk about Manchester from a city of England perspective rather than a metropolitan area.
@@expatseverywhereexploresbut then when you looked at the crime rates so say it comes third (on another thread) you used the metropolitan area. You need to make your mind up and be better st this. You are misrepresenting peoples home city.
Sorry the officiaal population size of the City of Manchester is arround 580,000 citizens, comparing London is incorrect as the bouroughs of London have been caleed London since Victorian times and call them selves Londoners, but people living in Greater Manchester Towns and Cities such as Salford, Stockport, Cheadle, Hythe staley Bridge may live in Greater Manchester but they are not Mancunians or live in the City of Manchester.
Eh have never felt that Manchester is aggressive, I lived there for a few years, visit 3 times a year, love the place, not so keen on American accents, perhaps that’s why they don’t like you!
Thanks for sharing, Caroline. We didn't feel any anti-American sentiment. - Josh & Kalie
Why are you disrspecting them because of their American accents? I'm a manc and have no problem with Americans! It is an aggressive culture here. Can't see much of an appeal for foreigners.
I lived in Manchester for 10 years (uni, early adulthood) then London for 20 years. I totally agree with your point about the aggressive vibe. I have always felt this about Manchester compared to many other UK cities (maybe Glasgow has a bit of that too). The alcohol thing is a shame. It's really overt and contradicts and diminishes all the work that has gone into trying to make it a stylish and grown-up city that has come of age. It goes hand in hand with the aggression where you find yourself forced to smile and laugh along with behaviour that really makes you want to make a run for it. These aspects of the city's culture give it an unhealthy and "only when you're young" feel; not a place to live in middle age.
Being fairer to Manchester, he weather issue is a bit overstated. It get's much less rain than New York (av. 1250 mm annually), The UK has a maritime climate....Manchester (av. 867mm annually), like London gets liberal amounts of drizzle all year round..as does London (av. 585 mm annually). This means mild, cloudy weather much of the time across the UK. I have lived rurally for the last 8 years and wouldn't choose to live in either place again..but for city life, London is "grown up" and a confident city.
That's in North West England
Most places in Manchester children are welcome until 9pm
We didn't experience that but that's nice to know. - Josh & Kalie
It’s actually Lancashire Hotpot , I was born in Middleton in Lancashire and Lancaster was our capital of the county but they took that away and made us part of greater Manchester .
Sorry, we misspoke and missed it in the edit because both words are similar. Good catch.
@@expatseverywhereexplores thanks for that it’s easy to mistake names , I make mistakes all the time in other countries, just didn’t want you to maybe order with the wrong name at some point .
Good luck for your future and happy days.
Its 'Lancashire Hotpot' Not 'Lancaster Hotpot'
Sorry, we misspoke and missed it in the edit because both words are similar. Good catch.
Best city in the world
Sorry but I found this all too disjointed . Shots of where ? Would have been better even if you talked over scenes of Manchester .
The weather alone would be enough for me to say “no”.
Fair enough! - Josh & Kalie
As I grew up in the Middle East the weather in Manchester is great and so relax the best northern city I ever met ! I hate sun therefore in choosing Manchester
population of manchester is 2.8 million pls get it right
No the population of Manchester the City of Manchester is officialy only 580,000 citizens, typical of Manchester folk getting mixed up between Greater Manchester and the City of Manchester, Greater Mannchester is not the City of Manchester
Interesting travelogue. But that dish shown at 1:22 looks absolutely disgusting, lol!
Thank you. Welcome to Manchester. LOL
You haven't got a clue what Manchester is like, you're showing videos of Salford and old Trafford and calling it Manchester, as far as I'm concerned you're not welcome here with your attitude
Greater Manchester then. :-) We stayed in the city center but had nice walks out in Salford and Old Trafford. We saw a big but old stadium that apparently has some history out that way. ;-)
I have lived and worked previously in Belfort in North East France for 2 years. It rains more there than Manchester per year. Manchester is smaller version of London (The capital is a world city). The airport is in the top ten in Europe for passengers. numbers The sport and music are world class in Manchester. It also has the largest student population in Europe. Lisbon has some very dodgy poor areas where drug addicts are rife. Greater Manchester population is 3.3 million is the same as the whole of Wales, and larger than the whole of Northern Ireland. The rainy city name is a myth also as it rains more in Southampton, Brighton, Belfast, Plymouth, Glasgow and Cardiff.
2.8 millon.
The population of the City od Manchester is only 580,000 citizzens, Greater Manchester is not a City.
@@peterwilliamallen1063 Yes it is.
"multiculturalism" okay yeah nevermind..

Man United itself should be enough to ❤ Manchester, right!!??😅 - and with climate change - “rainy” is a good thing!!!

No its not. It is full insecure people with victim complexes.
I have been to both Liverpool is miles better than Manchester 🖕🖕
I liver near Liverpool and Liverpudlians are obsessed with Manchester and have been for generations🤣
@@wirralh770 Your talking crap no one would be obsessed of that shit hole Manchester
@@paulhanafin9798 Manchester is a much better city. It is progressive, more cosmopolitan and loads more opportunities. Manchester had a Gay Pride in 1991. Liverpool’s first one was 2008. Oldham had a Pride before Liverpool. The place has a few nice buildings but Liverpool always has an air of menace about it. It’s the only big British city I never feel comfortable in. Even Birmingham which is a really ugly city doesn’t have that Liverpool feeling that it is about to kick off. Each to their own I suppose. Nobody in a minority would choose Liverpool before Manchester.
