Jim Thorpe -- yes, that Jim Thorpe -- should be strongly considered for enshrinement........since he saved the Eastern Industrial Basketball Leagues that were teetering on the brink of financial ruin. In the Roaring Twenties, what was East Coast pro hoops struggled mightily due to play degenerating into cumbersome pacing and physically resembling wrestling more than actual basketball. Fans voted with their wallets and stayed away......until Thorpe spent the latter portion of the decade leading a wintertime travel team called the “World Famous Indians” -- which highlighted an uptempo offense and defensive athleticism (the Original Showtime, I gather!). Gyms became packed for their exhibition games versus area pro and amateur clubs and local all-star squads, while league officials and team owners received a hard hardwood lesson on how the game needed to be played. And change came quicker than a modern day NBA fast break. And that a younger Thorpe was courted by several Canadian hockey clubs to play at the pro level of that era is a story for another time.
🗿After work I threw out some fruit chunks from a salad bowl all over the parking lot to feed the birds. I wonder why the seagulls weren't eating it and then I thought to myself " oh yeah birds don't have teeth......yeah"
