Thanks Cody - this is exactly what I needed to hear - it seems that Muse may be losing a lot of customers (almost including me) at first base because they don’t clarify the significance of calibration - they need to say a little more I think. Love this discussion - but just wanted to touch on calibration for now - you are officially my Muse Guru - don’t stop talking about chakras - its awesome! Keep it coming 👍
Easily the best resource out there about the calibration of Muse 2. In the forums at muse, Amazon reviews and other videos no one has a clue about how to properly do the calibration and explain the excessive feedback that sometimes we get. After 12 sessions I'm still waiting to get feedback only when my mind wanders, it doesn't really work all that well as they advertise.
It's much more broad-minded and nuanced than how a typical new-ager would talk about chakras though. The human connectome diagrams were interesting. It would be good to see a video on these studies alone. I don't know much about the human connectome, but the idea of being able to map mental states like this is amazing.
Like Cody said, I don't know if it is external or internal energy or just plain imagined, but chakras or energy center meditation is by far the most effective I have ever experienced. Call it a placebo effect if you like, doesn't really matter iwhat you call it if it works! Keep spreading the word Cody, thanks.
Cody, your explanation of the importance of calibration and the possible different ways of approaching it is very interesting. Keep these videos coming. And I agree with Mervyn that it is a bit brave for a neuroscientist to talk about chakras.
Hahaha thanks. But you understand I'm not talking about energy flowing in from the universe, ect. ect. but more about different focus points activating different brain networks right? Brave or Crazy? Only time will tell....
Thank you for the video. I did not use the Muse for a month because I started to get lower scores and I felt worse after the meditation then if I didn't mediate. I will try out the tips like opening my eyes during calibration and focusing on the different points.
Hey Dr. Cody.. thanks for the excellent tips you are giving in this channel. I would like to know if you did any research on the possibility of using Muse to identify patterns like "The Awakened Mind" studied by C. Maxwell Cade and Anne Wise? It would be really good if we could use Muse as the hardware to feed analysis like the ones done with BrainBay or BioExplorer. Also... are you aware of what is the maximum Gamma frequencies we can detect with the Muse?
From what I understand, Gamma frequencies are typically low amplitude and best tracked with highly accurate equipment that is more expensive :( Unfortunately there are limitations to the Muse for now.
Am I required to sit STILL for meditation while using Muse? but meditation is a state that should not be limited by body gestures. We can achieve the meditation goal even while dancing, drawing, making tea, etc. Can Muse track my status by the brainwaves and other metrics even when I am walking?
Great video Cody! :-) The possibility to calibrate the muse headband that way could be the selling/buying point for me! I`m totally new to neurofeedback and i`m looking into this technology for about a week. Is there a way to use Muse or another consumer-product for dynamic neurofeedback comparable to what NeurOptimal does?
Hi great channel, I’ve just bought a muse 2 and have a question please. Can you tell me why I get much better results whilst in meditation if I keep my eyes open, I get a higher score more birds etc, should I be working on trying to improve it with my eyes closed ? Or just go with what improves the score ? Thanks
Wow, that sounds very interesting, I'm gonna try that calibration/meditation process with focus points. When you recalibrate after 10 minutes do you then use the same process again (3rd eye point during calibration, sacral chakra in meditation) or do you then use other focus points? Interestingly I've managed to have super calm muse sessions, like 95 to 100% calm with a "hard" calibration (meditating during calibration) but still nothing out of the ordinary happened during these sessions in terms of energy, they were "just" very calm. I never really understood what I might be doing wrong or missing to not have these more transformative experiences... Thank you for your videos:)
I think his idea was to meditate during calibration to make the season harder. Then during the session you will have worked harder and hopefully gone into a more meditative state. Then use the state gained from the session to keep that state while in calibration (start another session right after the 1st session) mode to make the next session even harder. The idea is to keep going by repeating the process, so eventually you'll be calibrated to a really high standard. This could probably be described as recursive calibration. I knew about doing various things during calibration before, just from knowledge and experience. I never thought before about doing recursive calibration. He also had some good science to back up his ideas. I hope you have fun practising the recursive calibration, if you're able to understand the process.
Hi Cody! Do you have any experience with neurofeedback software that is compatible with either muse or the Emotiv epoc? I am not a trained professional but i have been in several neurofeedback sessions throu the Danish VA and i would like to learn more about. I found Neuromore studio but it dosent seem to work anymore sadly. My scope would be to get a system where i could progress at home combined with my meditation practise. Do you have any knowlegdes of such? Best Jonas
Jonas, the Myndlift system is neurofeedback compatible with the Muse. Check it out at www.myndlift.com. Feel free to contact the company and they can get you set up with a neurofeedback specialist. FYI, I am taking on neurofeedback clients with the Muse at www.techforpsych.com/coaching. Thanks for the comment!
got my muse headband yesterday, first few tries app said I got birds but I never heard them. also I tried just watching tv during the session and still got birds, also never heard them.
you can turn up the overall session sound and the birds will emerge from the background, they are inaudible at low volume settings. if the background gets too loud when you do that, you can go into the settings for sound and adjust the birds relative to the background
cute intro!! You should do more videos with someone else in them. also, i just ordered /bought muse so this is helpful and should be titled "how to get the most out of muse or biggest mistake with muse" imo. i almost didn't watch this bc i didn't want to know how to cheat but that's not what it tells you. ;) Now i know to give calibration full time and attention (with my eyes closed)
Haha! Thanks. I'm planning on making more straightforward Muse videos with better titles. Thanks for your suggestions, how the Muse experience is going well.
Hi Cody, I'm looking at purchasing the Muse for myself and looking at applications for my clients as well. Can you use the Muse for more than one person? Would you suggest the Muse 2 over the original? Thanks in advance.
hi cody, i am confused about how muse works. are you saying that when you go into gamma the sounds get louder so you bring yourself down again to hear the birds (which i assume means your in theta or alpha)? why would anyone want to stop gamma when that is what can literally heal your body and send energy through all the energy centers bringing balance to the body and healings to it and the mind (kundalini awakening)?
It would seem to me that if you want to go deeper you'd calibrate while you are already touching the Alpha states. Meditate for 5 minutes and then calibrate. Otherwise it seems you're chasing the birds.
upon thinking about my reply above i think it makes no real sense. Aren't brain waves monitored as a specific frequency? And if so isn't an Alpha an Alpha is an Alpha? So doesn't MUSE know an Alpha from an Alpha? Trying to get around this seems counter to what meditation goal is, which is no goal, just sit? Oh well
Yes... I thought I said do grounding exercises before the meditation? That will enhance the alpha/meditation state before starting. There are plenty of variations within the arbitrary labels of gamma, alpha, beta, theta, delta. Alpha would be a range of about 7-13 Hz and will relate to different functions/states depending on where it is in the brain. There can be big differences between 7 and 13 Hz. There are differences within a frequency range, location in the brain, and relationships to other frequencies happening throughout the brain. In addition, Muse is using more sophisticated EEG signal analysis than straightforward brainwave frequency ratios. My understanding is that there are more complex EEG characteristics being analyzed by machine learning to design the algorithms. I hope that makes sense. This is all practice in explaining it better.
Great video, doc! This is the first video muse buyers should watch.
Thank you Francisco

I have a video coming out this week that talks about mind wandering in the context of Attention vs Awareness that may help. Stay tuned!
Really good Cody; it's a bit brave as a neuroscientist to talk about chakras.
Thanks. I aim to further explain my views by talking about recent studies on fMRI connectivity studies

Could you do a video to explain adjust the muse headband, please. I had several problems. ☹️
Don't they have a tutorial in the app?
@@CodyRallMD very simple instructions...

You should be sitting still. Any movement will affect the signal unfortunately
Thanks...i have inconsistent sesions. Sometimes 80% others 60% 🙄

How do you suggest to change those focus points and relating it to the calibrating phases?
Hi Bruna, did you read my Muse Meditation Guide?

Work on trying to improve with your eyes closed because the brain waves change drastically when you open your eyes :)
Enfocarse en el chakra de la frente durante la calibración y en la meditación enfocarse en el chakra raíz

Yes you can use the Muse for more than one person. If you are buying a bunch for the clinic, the Muse 1 is probably the way to go for now.

I think I'm referring to a more balanced and sustained state than transient surges in energy. All up for interpretation.

Thanks for the update...it helps that I know it's a fluid state that MUSE is looking at
What we should do while calibrating ? Calibration with eyes open.
Thats the problem i have. Im meditate with my eyes open...i can’t advance..
Yeah, that's why you are not getting birds. Close your eyes during the session.
