  • Pruning of fruit trees is vitally important to their health. To prevent disease and help fruit ripen it is important to open up the center of the tree and spread out the branches. If left alone the tendency is for the branches to grow straight up. We discus a few ways to train the branches on your fruit tree such as Apples, pears, peach, plum etc. The trees in this video are in the horticulture class garden at Woodland Middle School. These donated trees were cut back a year earlier. Then Covid hit in March and we were told to stay off of campus. The trees sent most of its branches straight up because we were not there to help train them. Now a year later we are getting them back to the open vase shape that is preferred.

Wow! I have to go and do this tomorrow to my 11 fruit trees I planted in spring. They have all grown really big. I am scared because I just do not get the concept of how to prune them. I have watched a bunch of videos. Your video was great and you make pruning look so simple.

Glad to see someone else using a sawzall, makes quick work and probably cleaner cuts too!

@@FlanaganHomestead Thanks. Does the pruning and limb training in this video hold true to pears too? Your video description suggests that it dies.

Question, does it cause water sprouts to prune so heavy? Thanks

That is a good question, and yes pruning can be a cause of water sprouts. Admittedly I had a bad problem one year with water sprouts. Upon meeting with an orchardist he said my trees were getting too much fertilizer for how mature they were. The extra energy was sooting off new growth especially waterspouts. I was told not to fertilize any more.

@@FlanaganHomestead thank you for the reply. We only use worm castings so far. I still don't know what I am doing ha. I tried to revive an old pear tree that was on the place when I bought it. I made it shoot up a lot of them
      Thanks again.
