I had a different spin for the good Metal. Instead of Eggman being the creator, it's Neo Metal Sonic from the IDW series. Issues # 1-12 However Metal Sonic comes to the conclusion that he has evolved and no longer needs to put on the facade of being Eggman. Leaving this Metal Sonic "incomplete"... Years latter Dr. Tails finds him and re activated him. Most of Metals memories, but lack soo much of him.
theres 2 sonic bots that turned good: shard from the archie comics like you mentioned, but also mecha sonic MK2 in the IDW comics, scrapnik island to be specific "i am done being controlled by yesterday. i'm going to live for tomorrow" -mecha sonic MK2

I thought Metal Sonic was a future Sonic Roboticed. Which I think would be a better origin story for Metal then just Eggman builds him.
