Hey Dom. I have 1140 and 1060 BSC's that I've been using with my two FD motors on flat water... only used the 1060 once because it felt a bit small but I'm wondering if the 1050 HPS might go faster and be more fun and still good for turns with the extra speed but you said the BSC are already fast... not sure if the speed of the FDs are maxed out... thinking I would need to keep the speed up more for turns with the HPS...BSC is fun practising turns... hoping to focus less on flat water and get out in the waves. I'm 120kg :)
You totally need to try that HPS880 it's my favourite one for wing foiling! Also loving the HPS700 as it's super loose but requires serious wind. I'm 78kg. But you got me curious about trying a BSC. Cheers!
Amazing review Dominic. As a beginner wing foiler / intermediate windsurfer in super light wind which of these foils would you recommend? I plan on starting with a 100 liter board with a 6,7, or even 8 meter wing in sub 10 knots flat water. Thanks!
As a beginner I would definitely recommend the BSC range over the HPS range. The HPS are high aspect ratio which need experience to use. The BSC are mid aspect ratio and are very use friendly as well as suitable for well past the beginner stage. Which size to go for depends on your weight. Usually in some under 10 knots i would recommend going for the biggest foil in the BSC range (i think the 1120) but if you are around 70kg then the 1060 will be fine, or if you're super light weight then the 970 will be OK. Again, if you are 80kg+ then an 8m wing would be best in sub 10 knots, but the lighter you are you can get away with a smaller size.
@@dominichoskyns9091 thanks Dominic. I am 75 kilos and 6’2” so was planning to use an 8 meter strike. Would you go for the 1060 in sub 10 knots? Cheers!
@@neilsimon6871 yes I think the 1060 will work for you in sub 10 knots with the 8m strike, probably down to 7 or 8 knots. The 1120 will let you get on foil in 6 knots but it's so much less maneuverable and slow I would only recommend it for people 95kg or heavier who need the extra lift
@@dominichoskyns9091 awesome thanks Dominic. Are there any other foil set ups for these conditions you would recomend looking into other than the Axis BSC 1060?
@@neilsimon6871 a lot depends on your weight. I'm 85kg and I prefer the Axis 1300 for super light wind winging as it is a bit faster and has better glide, but it's a very different style to the BSC foils as it has a much higher aspect ratio than the BSC range. The 1150 is an option for light wind that a lot of people like and is very user friendly for a HA foil. Again it's more HA than the BSC foils but not as much as the 1300. You really need to consider the style you want to ride. The BSC foils are great for the beginner stages of winging but after that personally I think the the big BSC foils are better suited to SUP foiling than winging, as winging benefits from the speed and glide you get from a HA foil.
Dominic thanks for the videos. I’m about your size and thinking about my next foil after the 1020. How do you rate the BSC 970 vs 1150 for speed and pointing upwind in medium to higher wind conditions? And alternatively, is the 980 that much better that it’s worth shelling out the $ for the black fuse? Cheers HB
The 970 is NOT a fast foil. For foiling its slow but for SUP foiling small waves its great, very easy to catch waves and very well behaved on waves, but I think for anyone other than beginners it would be boring for winging very soon. The hps 980 is AWESOME - very user friendly for a fast high performance foil and has a huge range. IMO its well worth the extra for the black fuse
Hi Dominic, have been loving your videos. I've been progressing with Wing Foiling through 2021 and am considering upgrading my kit (started with Naish 125L board and Naish Jet 2000 front wing). Listening to your review, I am getting interested in the Axis HPS980, but would like your opinion on keeping with Naish HA, e.g., 1800, which a local shop recommended. Any thoughts on the Naish HA 1800 versus investing in the Axis instead. Any comments would be greatly welcome.
Wow this is a big question - there's so much to consider. What experience have you got in any wind/water sports? What conditions will you be riding in (light/strong wind, waves, downwind swell, wake, lakes, open ocean...?) What foil discipline do you want to do (wing, prone, SUP, wake, dock start, kite...?) The equipment you need for a complete beginner (even with experience in other water/wind sports) is very different to what I'm reviewing in this video. DM me if you want and I'd be happy to discuss this more - Dominic Hoskyns on Facebook / Messenger
My local shop told me the BSC970 is the best wing for me. I live in central Fl and want to use a foil to kite in the summer when the winds are super light. I have zero foil experience. I’ve been kiting almost 20 yrs. Seems to me from what you describe in this video the 970 would be too big for kiteboarding. Am I missing something? Thanks
The BSC970 is wayyyyyyy too big for kite foiling. Too much lift and too slow. I don't know much about kite foiling but I do know that 🤣 Put a message on the Axis foil riders Facebook group and ask for options for beginners, they are a wealth of knowledge facebook.com/groups/axisfoilriders/?ref=share
Thanks for the content mate! Question for ya, if you’ve tried the 910 how does it compare to these, especially the 890? I’ve been Loving my 910/370 combo here where we get a 15knots and windswell, makes it “surfable” and so much fun! The 910 is quite fast on my 6m Smik wing especially compared to the 1150, but when I’m out there carving the waves I feel like I want a little more roll side to side (I’ve got a 660 gull-wing kite foil that I love but I never kite anymore!) to really drive home that surfy feeling. Thinking of upgrading to an ultra short black fuse and was considering the 890. If you’ve tried them both, do you think they’re different enough to warrant a purchase or maybe just enjoy the 910 for now?? Cheers!
I've not tried the 910, but from what I've heard the 890 is faster than the 910. I've used the 1150 (same PNG range as the 910) which feels almost identical to the GoFoil GL range, i.e. very much like a classic HA style foil. the BSC range have a different feel - they are much more snappy and have a much more surfey feel. They are more stable in turns than the HA shapes. I think of the PNG range as a slow HA foil, the HPS as a fast HA foil and the BSC as a medium speed, surf style foil. The BSC are medium aspect ratio and pump great, but the PNG are probably the easiest to pump. The HPS pump well but only if you keep their speed up but that takes more effort. The BSC are very user friendly. **Did you know Axis are about to release a new thinner version of the 910 that fits on the black fuse? Could be a faster version!!!!!!!!!
@@dominichoskyns9091 thanks for the reply mate!! Honestly the 890 sounds like exactly what I’m after.. if it’s similar speed or faster but surfier it sounds like my new “it” wing. I've not winged, but I have prone surfed both the 910 and 890 back to back. 890 is heaps faster. 910 has more early lift, but not sure if that's because of the larger angle of attack on the red fuse vs. black. To me, the 910 feels less stable in roll than the 890.
Hi Dominic, have decided to move to Axis and recently acquired an ART999 following its release, along with an 86 carbon mast and 440 rear wing. For early intermediate wing foiling, and in particular, light wind performance, would you say the BSC970 has sufficient lift, say 10-12 knots, keeping in mind that my pumping technique is still developing. Am trying to decide on the BSC1060 or the BSC970, and even the PNG range. But I must admit to being confused as to the best next wing to complement the ART999, particularly for lighter winds. Any advice appreciated.
Normally I'd say the BSC970 would be perfect for what you've described, but now the 999 has come out it's shaken everything up as when you get experienced you'll have too much crossover between them in terms of their range. Yes the 970 will still be more suited to lighter winds than the 999, but the 999 has such a wide range that I'd go for a bigger foil that doesn't overlap it so much. The 1060 would be a better fit in terms of a light wind specific foil to pair with the 999, but bear in mind the BSC range have very different handling characteristics compared to the 999. If you want a more surfy feel in your light wind foil then the BSC is a good choice, but if you want to stick to the HA style then the PNG 1150 is a light wind machine - there's nothing to beat it for low end, but you sacrifice speed for that low wind performance. There's no easy choice I'm afraid😆
