I practice for 30 min at a time THREE times a day (two if it's a really busy one). I've found out is WAY more effective than practicing once a day in long sittings - plus it's convenient because you really can fit those little practices during your day. You guys should really give it a try!

I can confirm that this works. In the beginning I never really thought about when to practice so I just took my guitar whenever I felt like wanting to play right now. The conclusion was that I made very short practice lessons (sometimes I just played on verseand stopped again) but for multiple times a day and the learning curve was very steep. :D

I'm not much regular on my guitar, but on good days i can take my guitar in hands for maybe 5 minutes and do that like 10 times a day, it's really great when you just have an idea, where you relax for a lot of time, and still put out your max 150% on guitar and train what you need but in bursts. I can't sit on my guitar for an hour, 30 minutes is max and it's if i'm just doodling or playing songs and stuff
I'm thinking about buying an electric guitar, but i'm not sure what should i buy along with it, amp or interface or something else entirely, i haven't held any electric guitar in my hands
It doesn't help that i literally don't have a budget (and it would barely be enough to buy a guitar and amp, not much else) as i'm going to school, don't have a job and studying all the time and have another thing i'm doing (translating a book) along with playing guitar sometimes, full of stress. But playing guitar is nice, do it right now, whoever be reading this

Been playing for almost 50 years, and a few years ago I really felt that I'd hit a plateau and needed to up my game. I spend a lot of time in my home office, and so whenever I need a few minutes break, I pick up the axe and run some rote scales or fingerings I've been working on of late - something that distracts me a little, but not so much that I can't get my head back into the work I'm taking a break from. Since I started doing this, my technique has indeed risen to a new level. I'm faster, cleaner, and more melodic, all due to the increased repetition of technical exercises that comes from having the instrument in my hands a half-dozen times a day. Then a couple of times a week I'll do an evening fun-session jamming to backing tracks, and ride the thrill of expressive freedom unleashed by my technique gains. When you don't have to think about what or how to play, you can just play - and it's hugely satisfying!

Whats the point of learning the guitar if you dont push yourself? Yeesh... When i first started playing i played until my fingers were numb! If youre gonna do something, do your best. Don't short change yourself. Youre really just hurting yourself.

RC32 I face the same problem. I never had a teacher and in two years of playing the only proper (fast/technical) solos I can play are Fade to Black and Crazy Train. When I get to see a few of my friends playing an Avenged Sevenfold solo, it kinda makes me chop my fingers off one by one.

    • @RC32Smiths01

RG Indian ahhh ye I do also get the occasional self-conscious feeling when I feel that I did something fast and/or technical, feel pretty fine about it, then get overwhelmed by someone who does a shredding play that is like 5000x my prowess lol. Really everyone goes at their own pace, so it being that everyone is unique in how they feel to approach the 6-string. Just keep on trying and key is patience my man.

Your student is me, many years ago. I was taking classical guitar lessons, but almost never practiced. I was far too busy doing important things like partying and chasing girls. I wish I had realized that if I would have practiced and become an awesome player, the girls would have been chasing me. *lol* At least now, many decades later, I practice because I love playing, not because I want to get girls. Okay, maybe one every now-and-then.

Great mike.. just great! With you i started focusing on details instead of learning complex songs that over the years made me.. get bored. And just focusing on even smoke on the water but played to perfection made it.. amazingly rewarded. You make your adventure... sadly but funny for the ones willing to make it great.. This is something that applies to everything in life. Attitude is what defines your talent, and even if you are really bad.. keep GOING...!! Sun shines for everyone...

This applies to everything in life. Not just in our relationship with ourselves but with others. Most people in this life avoid struggle of any kind like the plague and as such do not know the gift that is perseverance which ultimately transfers into strength. Strength of mind, of manner and ultimately, a strength of character.

Ah yes, this is something I can relate to. When I was taking lessons I never practiced because I just wasn't a fan of playing guitar, then one day I forgot what song it was but maybe it was tornado of souls then I was like I want to learn this song and I went from practicing never to 45 mins a day doing what my teacher said to do and I then fell in love with guitar and now I practice for maybe a minimum of 3 hours a day and sadly my teacher passed away so I have to learn everything on my own basically and I have unlocked so much hidden potential within me.

Anyway, have fun when/ if you do. I'm sure I do.
Don't let the inevitable frustrating moments stop you - at some time you'll suddenly get that chord/ riff/technique/ whatever right and that feels so good.

Nedark, it's fun for a lot of people. You may have just had a different experience. I'm only 1 and a half years into playing but I remember the first time I learned how to play an Emaj and Amaj chord, I was sooo happy and I couldn't play any songs yet. I remember literally spending an hour per day just switching between the two chords because I (for some odd reason) found so much joy in seeing my transitions get faster and faster.

I'm self taught and definitely see where you're coming from. I practice 2-6 hours a day (with the occasional breaks, like a day or 2 off every few weeks) and every time I feel like I'm not pushing myself enough, I go and learn new songs that I would typically struggle with, songs with shredding, harmonics, tapping, or even just fast solos, etc.

I do wish I had someone to teach me the basics early on in my life like keeping a beat (which to someone only wanting to be a lead guitarist to get noticed for how many solos they can fit into one song, doesn't realize that all musicians, not only drummers need to know the beat) and to have taught me open chords and barre chords or at least power chords and teach me that they can be named a-g# and repeated in different locations and/or pitches on the neck. Instead I had guitar tabs which used string and fret numbers, so I always thought there was over 130 notes. And when you don't know where a song is played out of that many notes, it is extremely overwhelming to the point you feel like giving up. If people would just use the alphabet instead of those numbers and tell people they're mainly just repeated, it would be alot less frustrating. It would also have been nice to know that lead guitarists also need to know rhythm, and that I would end up being a singer who plays guitar (mostly fingerstyle) for accompaniment only. But only God would know that last one, but a guitar teacher would have been able to at least save me years off my life by teaching the rest. Stupid guitar tabs multiplying notes, and of course stupid arrogance that leads people into believing that lead guitar is the only important instrument in a band. It's not that it doesn't make music sound good, but it would be nice to know that people like hendrix, zakk wylde, and others started at the basics too, they didn't start with soloing, or finding their unique tone. This why you need to be thankful for guitar teachers, and listen to them when they are teaching you. And even more good news is, that even if I don't sound like the people I've tried to become, then thank God He made me unique and He doesn't make carbon copies. I wasted too many years also trying to be the next hendrix to realize that hendrix wasn't trying to be the next hendrix. Although I'm sure he had influences, If you here something that sounds like him, most people would say "that sounds like hendrix." Oh well... hope this helps at least someone get a revelation.

This is absolutely true I'm a bass player and I've been playing for about 9 months (self tough) and about a week ago I I wanted to lurn black dog by led zepplin and I was having trouble with the parts that are in the verses so for a week I went at it started with a few notes here and there and worked my way up to the full parts and no a week later I'm able to play the whole song almost by memory with out missing a note, this is a huge lesson that some guitar and bass teacher stint teach there student and it's that sure there are hurdles when lurning an instrument but once you get past thoughs hurdles the feeling of being able to play something that a week ago, a months ago or even a few days ago that you couldn't play anymore is such a good feeling and when you look back at it, it help alot with conference because you look back and say to your self i tough I couldn't do that and I was that mean if another hurdle comes in your path again you know you can do it you just have to work hard at it and not give up

100% agreed. When I started playing guitar, I got it and rarely played it. At a certain point I was like man, I really wasted my time and money. Then I hung out with my friend who sparked my fire to begin the guitar journey( and the journey never really ends) I give him credit for sure, but I also gotta say that day I pushed myself and never let go of the mindset. I was honestly really lazy and didn’t wanna try. But now when I think back it’s like wow I gotta give myself credit. Which I think everyone should do! One of my and I’m sure many’s faults is doubt. Don’t doubt yourself In this life!

Thank you for this. I’ve been taking lessons for a little while and I love guitar, but I just never seem to find the time to really practice. Like actual structured practice, not noodling on songs I know for a few minutes as a break from homework or something. I feel awful because my private instructor is incredible and i feel like i’m wasting his time. hopefully i can use this video as a call to action and make time for something i really care about. thanks again!

This is pretty true. I have been playing over 10yrs and stopped playing for a while,. I always wanted to play more etc but then I just left a guitar in the kitchen/living room (it's an apartment) so that it was at hand easily. I found that having it there it was easy to pick up and play while waiting around while cooking or watching TV and even just that, casually picking it up here and there helped a lot. Getting back most of my ability, shredding megadeth lucretia, tornado of souls and found it getting easier and more effortless. Was almost better playing a little bit more regularly than trying to sit down for a one off forced practice session.

I'm 35. Back in the day, i did not have any guitar teacher. I learnt the basics from my friends. Nowadays, I'm relearning the guitar with what's available in UA-cam. I'm so grateful to have guitar teachers like you and Marty who give great lessons for free. In the past one year, I have practiced almost everyday, and every day is a new lesson for me. Maybe I will be able to surprise you someday.
    Thank you.

Truth will not always be welcome and that is a fact, many will take this the wrong way but definitely the best people you can have around you is the people that pushes you and constantly challenges you . It will not always be nice but there is nothing greater than the feeling of overcoming a challenge as this is what I believe the real driving force of life itself. Thanks for this great advice I just wished I would had this mindset years ago

You’re totally right. 100%. I don’t think I’ve ever agreed with a video more than I have now. I’ve taken lessons for 6 years now, and I practiced a half an hour a week, if I was lucky. Granted, I had a ton of other stuff that over-saturated my week, but it’s no excuse for the poor work I’ve put into this beloved instrument. My teacher, he died awhile back. I respected him, and I still do. However, I don’t think that he was very impressed by my lack of effort. He probably died a disappointed man. However, I am pleased to report, that after two years of playing solo, I’ve had results that I never thought I could reach in the span of time that I accomplished them in. I guess it took the death of one of my role models to set me straight. I can confidently play in front of my relatives, where I before was “not good enough.” If I could have only told myself, those short 8 years ago, how much just an extra bit of practicing can go, who knows where I’d be?

I totally agree if you ever want to be better at something you have to put in the time and effort i spent every night several hours a night playing sweep arppegios for weeks on end to finally get where i was comfortable with my playing it was worth it to me and if you are serious about learning it will be worth it to you as well

Thanks 🙏 you really hit a chord (no pun intended 🤣) as of lately I’ve really been lacking in my practice and wasn’t getting anywhere. Last week after seeing this video I made it a point to do real practicing and ended up practicing everyday for at least an hour. Sunday I practiced for 2 hours straight. I went to my lesson today and blew my teacher out of the water with my playing. He even gave me more stuff to work on which not only made the lesson fun but I feel like I’m getting somewhere. Thanks for the reality check and keep up the excellent work with realistic videos!!

im learning to play guitar here on youtube, and what you say is happening to me, i learn a song, and im giving them my personal touch. also finding out on myself that you can play it in other ways. Its just some kind of motivation, trying different things and fooling around a lot on the piece. Its also about playing with feeling. Its not just all theory my opinion. Your a great teacher btw, wished i could get lessons by you for real. and everyone just loses his temper sometimes btw i practice an hour a day at least! Its just to much fun playing and learning new stuff everytime, its becoming some kind of addiction. Keep coming the challenges please

I have been playing guitar so much lately and i have noticed massive improvements over just weeks because i have been playing whenever i get free time which is quite often. I think that it is very important to practice at least once a day or maybe a bit less if you dont have the time to do it

I've only just begun to learn to play the electric guitar, which was recommended by my Neurologist as I have Multiple Sclerosis which has effected my right hand and arm. Evidently learning to play finger style stimulates the brain in different areas and repairs the nerves and muscles which have been damaged. Your website was also recommended to me and I would like to let you know, that I was so impressed with the quality of your lessons, that I have subscribed and now look forward to practicing the hour a day. Thank you.

This is very valuable information, I sadly was one of these types of students that was stuck on a song for a long time. I didn't quit but my guitar teacher moved away and i eventually stopped playing. After a few years I got back into it and really started enjoying it again. Such a large part of playing guitar is playing what you want to play/what you are interested in which will also naturally mean you will practice more and pick up some extra information along the way. Even now I regret that I even stopped playing in the first place. So if you are in this position right now, diversify your playing, don't exclusively play what your teacher is showing you, maybe pick a song you find impossible and work your way towards being able to play it and you will thank yourself in the long run.

I feel the 100 push ups concept.
When I was in the navy I made it I nightly routine to do as many push-ups and sit-ups I could within 2 minutes as I could, I would log my nightly progress and within 2 weeks I was over 100.

I've never had a guitar teacher, but at one time I regimented my practice for a particular aim (natural economy picker, but wanted strict alternate for PG style), and indeed, that bit of extra application gives great rewards.

I go thru ups and downs with my practice methods. I get backing tracks from 80s hair and metal bands. This makes practice so much fun. All of a sudden I am evh or dime, Satch, Vai I am a rock star in my studio. I do a song a day or two now. Mountain by Ozzy was the most favorite. Fall in love with practice, it's the only way for me.

I just started actually putting a lot of effort into guitar and I. Think I’m better now than I ever was but I’m still pretty new and I’m kinda getting stuck on how to practice and what to practice. I really want to play a full song one day. I’ve always been a riff master. I’m into the deep heavy metal stuff I’m just not sure what to do to get better as in generalized practice

As a fellow teacher this hits home so much! It would be awesome to have that surprise! Sometimes it's so hard to be motivated to bring new material to a student when I just have that sinking feeling that when ww sit down the next time we will have to spend the first 15 minutes of the lesson getting just back up to where we left off instead of moving on
