My 14yr old shihtzu has enlarged heart as well. He’s on lasix, after doing the ecg X-ray and blood wrk. The blood wrk came back excellent but the cardiologist did recommend a medicine to help open the air way so he won’t cough as much. But I love my lil guy so I’m just glad I’m able to provide and take care of him to the best of my ability. But he’s doing good he has the most energy for his age and I’m happy tht he’s happy

We took our 15-year-old chihuahua to Emergency because he had fainted and was having difficulty breathing. They put him in oxygen tank and they thought he was in CHF. They gave him Lasix. Turns out no evidence of CHF so discontinued the Lasix but he did have pulmonary hypertension, not sure what the underlying cause is. He is now on sildenafil every 8 hours... very scary time. Haven't investigated further as the emergency bill really set us back. I really hope we have more time with him. (I am worried again because I noticed him coughing more).

My Chihuahua has a stage 5 heart murmur and pancreatitis. I rescued her about 6 months ago.
I've been to 3 different vets and emergency, spending over $3000. The vets got their money, but I still have a sick little Sweet dog. The medications are so hard to give her, and she doesn't eat much.
I am 73 years old, and live on a small social security. I feel so helpless and bad for her. She is only 6 years old. I am with her 24/7, and try to make her life as comfortable as possible. The vet says there are other tests they can do, possibly surgery, but I don't have the money. I pray she will be ok, or at least have some semblance of quality of life. I love her very much, and know many other people are going through difficult times with their fur babies.

I did not even get to be there because my mom was taking care of her while I finish my degree abroad. I was supposed to come home in just two months. My 12 year old chihuahua was diagnosed with this a month ago. He is on furosemide and sildenafil. He was perfectly fine in September. Then we traveled for month and a half to Europe and the coughing started when we came back in November. We live at a high in altitude place (2400 meters above sea level) but that was not a problem before. Could the fact of coming back to a high altitude after being around 1200 meters above sea level affect him? Would he be better if we moved to a closer to sea level place?

    I really like this video.
I had a chihuahua that had CHF we caught it just on time and she continued to have excellent quality of life for years. It was a bit expensive for me but it was worth it. But there was that time that I had to make that call.
So if you catch it early that's good otherwise with out the medications they are suffering.
CHF for dogs is just like it is for humans, dog are a part of the family.
The only thing I didn't like about this video is about the compound. It's hard to get, there not a lot of places that can make it. And if it has to get mailed to you, well think about it, the way the mail is these days bcuz of COVID you might not get it on time.
So IDK why the compound was even mentioned.
The medications are very easy to give either liquid or pill form.
    Thank you for this video

      Hi
The medications need to be prescribed by the vet.
The meds I got for my chihuahua was Lasix, VetMedin and a high blood pressure medication.
I caught it some what early but she lived 3 yrs on the medications.
I spent about 100.00 a month around there.
I would not spend all that money to do an echocardiogram especially if your chihuahua is 12 yrs you don't want to put her through that.
      I'm guessing she got an
X ray that showed her enlarged heart.
Remember, vets know we love our pets and we would do anything for them so they do try to take advantage of that.
I would just ask the vet about the medication and see how she does with that if possible.
I know it's a tough Decision, im sure she had a good happy life with you. Think about her and her quality of life.
Keep her calm & love her
      I hope this helps.

Oh BTW You can't just buy the meds because you need to know what dose to give her.
So every month you just pick up at the Vet.
Like I said to keep her calm like not to run around a lot and not get over heated.
Also, watch her diet don't over feed her.
keep in mind Dogs do get heart attacks.
So if she's just coughing & coughing a lot then that's when you need to do what's best for her.
But don't do the echo, its really not necessary unless you want to.
Maybe you can apply for care credit🤷‍♀️

A heart murmur is a result of something going on with the heart. It is not connected to all heart disease. So yes a dog can have cardiovascular disease without having a heart murmur. You are correct that I would wonder about potential syncope going on with said dog.

You can ask your vet or get a second opinion from another vet which would be willing to fill the meds. The only thing is you would most likely need to sign a waiver releasing the veterinarian from any responsibility since they would be guessing what they are treating instead of being able to do the tests and determine what is going on and then more precisely treat the condition.

Hi! My dog was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and the doctors told me he is between stage A and stage B. He does not have any symptoms, he is 9 years old, he gets tired when going out on long walks so in the past year we've been going out for short walks-15-20 mins. But when the weather is not hot he doesn't even start panting. At home he is playful, wants to play catch and he rests and sleeps a lot. He has a good life with minimum stress.
So the doctors told me we should start a little treatment just in case. 1 month ago we started Vetmedin 5mg. I give him one half in the morning and the other half in the evening. My question is what should I expect in the future? How much time does he have and is there a possibility that he stays in stage B for a really long time?

Months later it got more frequent but same pattern, only after she had been sleepy on her side. I was worried so i went to another vet who has biggerr office, more equiptment. The medications should not be making him cough more if anything they should be making him cough less. If he is not responding to those medications with reduced symptoms then you will either need to try treatment for potential lung infection or look into further testing or follow-up testing such as x-rays or ultrasound of the heart. That way you'd be able to figure out more precisely what's going on and treat with a higher chance of success

My Boston terrier is 10 and she has been coughing a lot but it sounds like the same cough that she would do every once in a while even years ago because she has a pushed in face and these breeds can have Trachea issues so idk if she has a collapsed trachea or CHF she is still eating good and runs around outside and right at this moment I can’t afford all the testing :( vets want the money right up front and it’s so expensive with inflation and having kids and trying to keep up on bills and our mortgage has been tough so I been trying to watch videos to see what a dogs sound like with CHF vs Trachea issue

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  2 роки тому

those drugs are to safe use in cats. they are drugs that are normally used for patient in CHF. If you don't help the heart pump better by giving those drugs, then that will lead to decreased blood to vital organs like the kidneys, causing kidney damage. So the short answer is, those drugs are fine to give to patients in CHF(assuming the xrays and echocardiogram on agreement) and you could cause kidney failure to develop faster if you don't give those drugs

    • @DrLera

As medical doctors we have to make recommendations based on what there is data available to support our treatment. I am more than happy to take a look at the data if there is data available regarding the effectiveness and safety of using said natural treatments for the safety of the heart. If patients are stable and clients are patient then we have more flexibility in the different treatments we can try. For example last week one of my clients told me that pumpkin seeds could be used as an anti parasitic treatment. I checked the literature and there was some data that said that it did have antiparasitic effects but even the alternative medicine veterinarian did not recommend it as a first line for treatment of parasites. So we just have to be aware of when and where to use different things. I think it's important to keep an open mind and to happen open flow of communication
