  • Sheba has had a cough for years, especially when pollens counts are high. Benadryl at 1mg per pound and childrens robitussin( Robitussin DM) help reduce the inflamation and soothe the throat. Coughing can also be due to pneumonia, asthma, heart problems, and kennel cough.

Thank you for this video. My Cavalier has an enlarged heart, but her hacking has recently been extremely bad, just all of the sudden. We are use to living in Southern California for 12 years, but were in Ohio now and all suffering from allergies. Even my other Cav without a heart murmur, is coughing some. Staying on top of her heart condition (MVP), but will try Benadryl to see if that is main cause right now, since it came on fast since being in Ohio. She does pant at night often, and I assume that is the heart :(. Had recent xray, but left without much direction

Hello Dr. Martinez. I love all your videos I wished I lived in your area to take my three babies with you. I had a question about my 5 yr. old female Dachshund. After delivering 1 puppy 7 months ago she has become very antisocial in some aspects, she runs or stays in her kennel when it is time to go the restroom, she pees when you hold her or pet her, as well her reverse cough has worsened. I am not sure why this happening to her because the other to rascals are perfectly fine.

I think it started when we fired up the wood stove....I also have horrible allergies and asthma in this area but only in the fall...I am wondering if maybe he is having an allergy issue...

We had several Australian Terriers (or Australian Terrors lol) ....aka 14-20llb Little Cairn Terrier type dogs (think "Toto" from Wizard of OZ). One thing common to every one of our Aussies was that they choked/coughed "on demand" like sheeba ...we actually could not even walk any of them on any regular collar because the moment it pressed their throats even a little they started coughing/choking ...turns out VERY common with the breed and the answer was to use harness rather than collar to walk em.... very sensitive larynx is what the vet said as I recall... lousy leash walkers!

I have a St. Bernard puppy who is 10 weeks old and she just started a cough that sounded like that of kennel cough but she also has a runny nose. Her cough is random throughout the day and has been going on for a few days. It also seems as though she is not eating as much as she has been. I just want to make sure it is nothing serious and if I should use the coughing medicine for her even if she is a puppy. Our 2 other adult dogs have not coughed or anything yet.

My 1 year old 5th generation Labradoodle seemed to start losing energy 3 weeks ago. A week ago he started serious wheezing where he sucked his stomach practically up into his chest cavity. After several wheezes he spits up some white, seemingly digestive opaque white to digestive phlegm. The episodes last about 30 seconds and happen 3 to 4 times a day. His lungs were shown to be clear, heart fine, pees and deficates in a healthy manor. I would appreciate any feedback on treatment I can get.

Weirdly my yr and half old pom I've had for a few months just started coughing and gagging at the end. She's been doing it on and off all night. Then some days nothing. Definitely not trachea because she's got no issue breathing and there's no visible stress. I keep them in a fenced in yard and they have not been around any new animals or dogs neither have I. I stay at home and my husband works at a hospital and all have had their vaccines like bordetella so I'm just thinking or hoping atleast that it's allergies and not some heart cough. I have a white pom named Rascal that's my dream pom and he is getting to be 7 yrs old soon and sometimes he gets little fits and notice it when he gets real excited buy no issues breathing. He breathes fine and don't hear any weezing or anything. His air way seems and sounds clear just has these fits from time to time.

My 4 pound dog suffers from acid reflux, as per the doctor. Every single time that she regurgitates, which is like 7 times a day.. she makes this “reverse sneeze “ kind of sound. Do you think that could be allergies ? I took her to see three different doctors and they just say the same thing, that the reverse sneeze has nothing to do with the regurgitation. Could it be food going thru the wrong pipe everytime she regurgitate? I am scared she is going to get pneumonia.

Other than that nothing seams to be wrong with her. She has plenty of energy and is always hungry. Any ideas what this could be? Don’t want to miss something that could hurt her in the long term. She is an 11 year old Aussie.

I gave my friend a 200mg capsule of co-q-10 for her dog with CHF. Instead of giving the lil guy a couple drops, she gave him the whole thing, squirting it into his mouth. They left, the dog had unbelievable diarrhea all over when they got home BUT NO cough since. What is the max dose of claritin I give my 90 lbs lab with severe seasonal allergies? This is the first time shes had a hacking, dry heave kinda cough. She'll be 19 next July so I'm going to give her co-q-10 to be safe, vet if it doesn't clear up.

Thank you for posting this video! My 11 yo puggle, Sammy, has been coughing for over a year now. It's a wheezing, gag-like cough, like he's trying to get something out of his throat. Kennel Cough was negative. X-rays reveal "thickened airways" and recently our vet said his lungs look a little denser than normal. No signs of heart problems or blood levels to indicate cancer. Lipomas are confirmed fatty tissue. Treatments of antibiotics and Temaril P reduce lessen the cough, but it comes back. He's been on an LID all his life - he throws up regular brand dog food. No treatments to date have stopped the cough. I think he's allergic to something causing the reaction in his airways/ Do you have any suggestions. Thank you Dr. Martinez!

I have a 13 year old English Lab that has a cough kinda thing. He will make a "huh" sound followed by a cough. He and another dog live outside on our property and have not been near any other animals (besides wild critters) in about 6 years. I need to take him in, I just don't want to hear that I'm finally losing him... I know the day is coming but...

My 8 1/2 year old Newfoundland has started to cough a couple of times a day. It is a dry cough and sounds like he is trying to clear his throat. We changed his food a couple of days before this started. Is this likely to be an allergy?

My 6 year old Bichon Frise has that deep cough that Sheba did, but he gags at the end. I don't know what it is and I don't have money to go to the vet. He's been doing this for years, but it always gets worse in the winter. Now that Imoved to Florida, the cold and humid winter is taking a hard toll on Max. Should I give him some Children's Robitussin or should I try the Benadryl to see if it's actually allergies? I'm thinking about he Benadryl since there are a lot of plants releasing pollen right now and there are plants that Max nor I have been exposed to before. He's 15lbs, so I'm thinking about giving him 15mg doses for a few days and seeing if it helps. Only question is how do I dose him? The only Benadryl I have is in 25mg capsules. I'd love some help.

Afnan Sabbagh awe man that sucks...you should consider getting her on a wellness plan at Banfield...its the pet hospital inside of petsmart. u will be able to get unlimted vet visits and the prices are much better. you pay a monthly fee. you should really look into it..i started with my older shitzu years ago before he past..he had constant issues and it saved me a lot of money when i switched to them. n you can travel and go to any banfield n her be seen. i hope you find a solution though and she feels better soon.

I would change her food to cooked or raw and only 1 protein at a time. Fish is usually good to start with. (chicken and beef usually are most allergic) if she keeps throwing up amd diarrhea then switch the protein but slowly. Hope she feels better.

My dog has been having a harsh cough for like 4 years now. I’ve tried everything natural and nothing works. It’s mostly when she moves around or they pick her up. It’s like 5 coughs and then one big one and a gag at the end. It’s every day. She still eats her food. Drinks her water. Runs around. She a miniature pincher. She’s 13 years old.

Omg so does my 14 year old boy he has a high pitch cough especially after water and water and one big gag at the end nothing comes out. His breathing is fine he eats plays is happy but has a heart murmur and on tablets im conceived tho it’s the throat or allergies

@@anastasiabeautyy1864 my chihuahua too! He’s 8. He JUST started this two days ago. He did pull really hard on the leash 3 days ago. He hacked right afterwards but that was it. Next morning he started hacking with the gag at the end. But I thought his throat already seemed irritated for a week prior to this. He was doing a lot of reverse sneezing (more than normal) and he’s always suffered with runny nose, red watery eyes, and now this. Plus, on the same day that he pulled, I was running the AC window unit and I am thinking maybe the filters need to be changed due to all the pollen we have. Vet said she thinks it’s tracheal collapse or his heart murmur. But I honestly think it’s just allergies. I’n really hoping it goes away and it isn’t something serious. He eats, drinks, and is still playful. Lots of fast movement does make him hack. His second day of this hacking though has been a lot less than the first. So I’m hopeful.

Maybe you can help me, please. We have a senior age cairn terrier. We have had him for over five years. We adopted him from Austin Pets Alive! out on Lavander Loop. On his papers, when we brought him, no sign of kennel cough, but ever since that day, when we got him home, he has been coughing. It is sporadic, harsh, but mixed. It can be a goose-honking like cough; other times, hacking and forceful...sometimes, it is just small, short coughs. Sometimes, sneezing and reverse sneezing also happen with it. He will also notably just look at me and cough. He will do it also for attention or if he wants something. Notably, he does not do it at times outside and definitely not when he is eating, sleeping, or drinking. We've seen his symptoms...other than the cough, nothing heart-related or kennel cough related. He eats, he drinks, he goes outside, and shows zero signs of respiratory distress. Is it allergy related? Is it an attention cough? There is no phlegm behind it; so, it is not a moist cough and it is not persistent either. However, it is chronic enough that we think he has either asthma or chronic bronchitis. No sign of nasal mites either...Any help would be helpful here. We've been using Benadryl and, at times, doxycycline to treat it as we are not sure whether it is an infection. Believe me, any help would be helpful and we would be grateful for it. His cough is getting us frustrated and we just want to know what we do for him to get the fur baby feeling better. That's it.

Hey, did you find out what that cough was? My dog has been doing exactly the same thing.

    • @amandaalvis5958
      @amandaalvis5958 Рік тому

@@Ssandyyy-- Well, it turns out it was multiple things...part behavioral, part actual thing. The actual thing was allergies. He is allergic to cedar and juniper which are in abundance in Austin. Hopefully, with the move, those allergies will go down considerably. As to the behavioral thing, can we just say that, after his cold last winter, he got smart.
Turns out, especially after that, he figured out he can manipulate his humans by coughing. Now, this is my little guy; yours might be different. However, he got clever and has been using it as an attention cough/a fake cough to get extra things around the house. Turns out dogs are clever and can be trained to do that. He does it for chicken soup (just plain chicken broth, no salt or anything) as well as for anything else he wants...extra walks and the like.
So, turns out, the only thing that is actually wrong is allergies. The rest he has been playing us for five years straight. It''s like barking with him, but without the bark...he gets his point across. Separation anxiety from me also plays into it as well. Right now, we are all dealing with cedar fever and that's what has been making him feel worse and snotty, same thing with me. So, that's the story. However, turns out that we cannot train him out of the attention cough. We tried; so, now, we just adapt to it. Since we figured it out, he has toned it down as he has been found out though.

My vet told me I could give him Zyrtec every day 10 mg, my dog only weighs 6lbs so I worry its going to cause damage in the long run. But it does help him. Also he has had two X-rays of his lungs in the past year, the vet said his lungs look like a 10 year old dog :( I worry it could be something more serious but I don't know what else to do for him. And the vet seems to be guessing and trying to treat everything.

It can be food intolerance, it is like allergy but symptoms are not so violent but still bad. Hard to diagnose. My dog suffers the same problems - coughing with foam/ mucous. There are also pancreatic problems and I suppose it can go towards IBS. Prednisone does work for my dog when cough gets worse (by the way 5 mg it is not a big dose as for 100 lb).But in the long run the diet is a crucial thing. Try to find what makes your dog ill - it can be really tiny thing like a piece of egg for example, or gluten, or fish. Or too much fat or fiber if pancreas is bad. Remember that symptoms in food intolerance can be late - might appear up to even 72 hours after eating, so it is very hard to find the culprit.
Try herbs. Licorice root is good for soothing stomach - make an infusion and give your dog (use syringes if he doesn’t want to drink). 1 g of licorice powder per 200/250 ml of boiling water. Let is stay for a while then strain.
I think the dog can drink even as much as twice his weight is- 100 lb means some 50 kg -so some 100 ml maximum daily dose. But start carefully with same smaller doses , individual intolerance can happen - lets say - first day 15 ml, second day 15 ml, third day 15 ml- after 72 hours probe/test increase the dose. Licroice should not be administered very long as it leads to potassium loss, I usually give it for a few days, then take a break . You can also give chamomile tea daily and from time to time infusion of mullein flower (Verbascum) and agrimony flower or leaf ( Agrimonia eupatoria) - flower is milder than leaf, use less of leaf in infusion than flower.
These 4 herbs keep my dog alive, and from time to time prednisone but I try to give it only when it is really bad. Be careful with other herbs, a lot of them is choleretic-promote bile secretion and in case of my dog and his pancreas it makes things worse.
