In this episode of The Router Bits, Patrick takes us back to the basics, the beginnings, the roots of routing. So, if you are new to the process of using a hand held router, this is right up your alley.
Very informative video - learnt a lot with that. Thanks.
You're very welcome, Peedles! We are always happy to know that we have helped someone along with their woodworking. Thanks for watching and for your kind comment.
Really great tips and advice there, Patrick. 👍🏽
Cheers mate.
I got to say, the router is probably the most freaky tool in my shed.🤔
Doesn't get a whole lot of use, and is probably why it get my hackles up when I do use it.
Thanks Bill. Well, here's hoping it doesn't stay idle anymore. The router is a great tool in the workshop!

I whole heartedly agree, such a handy versatile tool.
But scary as all get up!
😂😂😂
Thanks for that. I think I've been working with some bad info. I was told to put the bit all the way down and then raise it slightly before tightening and then don't over tighten as it can destroy the collet. I have the same router. Just a beginner so would appreciate your comments.
Hi Caspian of Narnia! We asked Patrick, and his response is:
That all sounds like reasonable advice actually.
Raising the height of the bit prevents any blade edge contacting the collet - which is good to look out for. The bit I was using had a collar protecting the bearing so I didn't need to raise it. But! Good catch and good advice in general! As for over tightening the collet, I have had bits slip or move due to the collet not being tight enough. So now I make sure its pretty tight. I have had this router for years and I have never destroyed the collet with tightening. But, I have had pieces ruined due to slipping bit height. Hence my enthusiasm with the spanner.
Timbecon thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I’ll be sure to tighten the bit a lot more than I’ve been doing. I really don’t use my router enough so I’m very thankful for your videos.
@@caspianofnarnia You are very welcome. Keep us posted on your progress. And hey....if you haven't done so already, check out the entire Router Bits playlist as Patrick suggests in this video. There are some excellent videos outlining setups and techniques for different router bits and processes. And be sure to subscribe. There is much more to come. Again, many thanks for watching and for commenting. Always appreciated.
