  • This week we begin Part 2: The Lady of Shadows, covering chapters 1 through 3 where we spend some time with Detta and Odetta before yanking them into Roland's increasingly crowded beach party.
Next week we'll conclude Part 2: The Lady of Shadows with chapter 4 and re-shuffle. Remember to check out the show schedule below if you're ever unsure of which chapters are covered when!
    Listener Discussion:
One of Odetta’s defining characteristics is being part of “The Movement” for civil rights for people of color, Why do you think King chose to explore this idea in this book?

Gotta say I LOVE this channel. One of the best. King is my favorite author bar none. So you guys going in-depth with my favorite author and favorite book series is like a dream come true. Kinda embarrassed to admit this, but my favorite series USED to be the Harry Potter series. They came out when I was 11 (same age Harry was when he got accepted to Hogwarts) and they came out year after year and I just felt like I was going to Hogwarts too. It was the perfect time for me to grow up with Harry Potter. That being said, I just wasn't ready for The Dark Tower series then. Harry Potter got me into reading. The Dark Tower solidified my love of reading while simultaneously becoming my favorite books of all time not even close. But I strayed from my point. Thank you guys for putting so much work into covering my favorite books thank you thank you!

And I love your theory that Roland was supposed to draw Detta instead of Odetta. I love the implications of that!

I also looked up on the webernet to see if that was a real plane crash. Just shows the power of King's writing, that he can make it seem so real, or make us think that it could have been something that had actually happened. And I never thought about the number of times planes are mentioned. That's a really cool realization and something I am going to pay more attention to for the rest of the story.

I've read/listened to the entire series off and on the past 20 yrs. I'm here to get a different perspective. Let's see how it goes.

I also think that Matt has read wikipedia on this franchise before hand. He acts like he's NEVER read any of these books and yet he has way to many "oh this is my guess at what's happening" and he turns out absolutely right. There is NO WAY Matt could have known that the brick that hit Odetta and the incident with the train when she lost her legs are connected. He couldn't have known that. Matt has absolutely read the cliff notes on The Dark Tower series before. No way he didn't lol

You guys are worrying about the racial stuff too much. All the N words are uncomfortable but part of the story. Don’t focus on every little thing. And the guns are .45s nothing special he makes that clear.
