This was pretty nice. i'm always looking for anything to speed up painting just to get it over with faster. I'm guessing this might not work super great if you are trying for a half and half scheme. my inner masochist has been coming up and bugging me to try that on my own space marines when they get updated. maybe if one half is a super boring color like black. While i can't argue on Raven guard having a boring scheme I will disagree on most boring lore.

Raven Guard player here and I can confirm we have a very boring paint scheme. It is so boring that it burnt my desire to paint for a while. I just got back into it with my orks for 40k and Ironjawz for sigmar.
In a future video, I suggest you compare a single application of raw contrast to your multiple thin application technique. It would be cool to see the visual improvement.
Raven Guard can still be decently fun to paint I think. I shift mine more into the blue like you suggest. The odd white helmet or arm helps too, and some heavy weathering makes it interesting enough. The latter are not necessarily viable for speedpainting though, admittedly. But then, I usually spend way too much time on my armies anyway.
Love the Imperial Fist!! I like these different time frame videos. My personal sweet spot is somewhere between 2-4 hours. Would love to see more of your takes on doing a model in that time.
Oh, also, I would have love to have heard why you chose each undercolor, particularly how it would relate to the final color. I noticed you used brown, ivory, cold blue, etc. I guess you did to some degree, like the two blacks, making one cold and one warm, but I was fascinated in the final run about some of the choices (like brown.)
“Going full Richard Grey on this one”, got me laughing. Really nice job in a short amount of time. I’d love to see a way to tackle 2-3 colour minis in a speedpaint, like e.g. sororitas. I guess it’s all in picking the right under shade (under highlight?) colour and then just colouring in.
Love seeing tips and tricks related to Contrast paints! Curious how you feel about the drybrushing you showcased here vs. airbrush zenithal highlighting? Is one "better" than the other when it comes to speed-painting? I tend to avoid drybrushing because it feels more monotonous to me for some reason, but I can't help but look at your results and be impressed with how "bright" things can look compared to a standard airbrush zenithal. always appreciate your videos. Can't say Ill be embracing these techniques though. The result isn't good enough IMO for tabletop. That Ultramarine and the Iron Hands were probably the exception. I'd say an hour per model is the minimum, probably 3 hours for me because I paint so slowly. One thing I should take away from this video is actually trying to paint fast. See what I can get done in an hour if I really push.
Agree that the RG and IH are boring. The only cool black marines have crosses on their shoulders! The coolest Chapter from the coolest Legion But as always, a great job. First thing i thought when I heard you say 20 min per marine was "airbrush". A great no airbrush tutorial, and they do look good, especially for the time involved.
20 minutes just isn’t enough. I get that this is more targeted to beginners but some of these are SO patchy. I’d really like to see your method for a 30 or 40 minute speedpaint (preferably without contrast paint, which is very hard to make look decent on marines).
Oh my God I'm so glad I watched this video because well one it's not the dollar stores Dollar general brand and I know because just yesterday I bought some from there and since the drive home up until now I'm worried and wondered if they would be sufficient and was about to chill out 20 bucks for just a couple of name brand "makeup brushes"
I get what yoy are trying to do but some of those marines look pretty terrible, such as the Wolves and Ultras. Not your fault but Contrast paint really does not work as a basecoat as advertised at all. I mean I look at them and go, would have come out so much better with AP Speedpaint..

Thank you for this! I have been trying to find a quicker method for black FOREVER....Would you recommend this method with an airbrush instead of dry brushing for the first layer (the drybrush after priming)?
Interesting stuff Vince. Rather than drybrush why don't you just do a rattle can zenithal (or airbrush). Would be a lot quick that the drybrush. Also for some legions, like Ultramarines. Macragge Blue rattle can does 80% of the work then it's just black, gold and silver with red lens and you're done!!
The point here was to keep it as base simple as possible and lower all barriers of entry. Assume they have a black rattle can and brush. The issue with something like a rattle can blue (and I’ve talked about single color priming before) is you don’t get the built in contrast you get with this method (or an airbrush or similar) :)
Question. This is how I paint a speed painted grim dark. But how can I go back and improve my army, a white and green 40k death guard? Also do people pay for that style in commissions? People at the FLGS like my paint job and I could use a little money.
If people are willing to pay, then you're good. Most of the time, it's just a matter of people wanting to get some paint on the models. :) - As to improvement, you certainly can, you can always go back and add more shading and highlighting.

Loved the video as ever, plenty of ideas to take away from this; but somehow the contrast colours didn't give the hue I wanted to see - is it just me or did the Blood Angel look too magenta and the Imperial Fist look too cold a yellow instead of a warmer more orangey yellow. Maybe undercoating in deep orange/brown mixture highlight to pale orange and then ivory might have warmed both up?
ik u just did a SM speed paint but could you do a guide for super trim heavy models? I play CSM and tsons and its a huge pain painting all that trim even for run of the mill front line troops. Im wondering if you know any tips or tricks that could help out with "speed"" painting them

Hey Vince: I've been loving using Makeup brushes for dry brushing and stippling recently, but I've found that it's really really difficult to clean the brushes afterwards. They have SO MANY BRISTLES that color keeps staying deep in the brush long after I think it's clean. Do you have any advice?
I've been using your display Imperial Fist tutorial to paint my IF army and love the results but I have been considering switching from Iyanden Yellow to the new Imperial Fist yellow to pump up the brightness. Seeing these results and hearing your enthusiasm with the new color, I think I need to give it a try.

Great video - for thinning the contrast with contrast medium, is the reason for that to make the contrast effect a bit more subtle, but still give good coverage? So you don't get as extreme areas of shade that may need to be brightened up as much? Edit: nvm, was explained later on, ty!

Your top 3 is my top 3! Not so familiar with the lore, so basing that solely on the color scheme's. Have been enjoying painting space marines just to practice yellow red and white. Experimenting with different undershades and having a lot of fun.
I really liked the White Scar marine. Personally, I don't get what people see in the banana marines, but to each his own. The rough stippling definitely provides a much different look than the standard, crisp, and very clean marines we see on the box art. Thanks for the video.
The video's great, as usually, but I wanted to comment in particular that your ordering of the legions is pretty much spot on. In particular I would definitely put the Blood Angels, Imperial Fists and White Scars as the top three (not sure I could order them).
I use a similar approach when I need to speed paint. Although I tend tonuse contrast paints more as glazes. I wick the extra moisture off on a paper towel, and it leaves a wonderful smooth transparent look.
I'd love to see a vid where you speed paint more imperial fists in different ways and kind of compare them. So different base coats etc. I know if you use a pepto bismal pink as a base then white as your top down highlight you get this really nice orange. I've seen goobertown post about that originally but I was letting my 3 year old paint a few figs the other day and she did that on accident and it was just one of the nicest oranges I've seen and it made me really want to find more ways to apply that
Richard grey has been doing a bunch of recipes for imperial fist with the new contrast paints, its some fun ways of doing it there to, and this was great with them all. I could not do a model in 20min and be happy with it , but still fun to see
You could have used a pink under shade, then ivory highlight to give the Imperial Fist an orange shading after the yellow contrast was added. That usually comes out pretty well.
I have come to realise I just don't like Contrast paints even for speed painting jobs. The tiding is an issue but even without that things feel...washed out. Base+Shade+Drybrush highlight, then details I think gives a much better overall result and takes only a tiny bit longer and...if you use a suitably coloured primer (thank you Montana Gold!) it might even be faster overall.
How would you rate the other yellows in the range? I picked up some Ironjawz and have been satisfied with it, but wonder how it compares to Imp Fist and Bad Moon.

Something like the imperial fist yellow and leviathan purple plus maybe a touch of the Ork flesh could produce a nice color.

Basically laying down some neutral but appropriate tones that would give a nice temperature to thr color above, feels like a whole video for sure.

The drybrush gets you higher opacity faster, but has less softness to the transition.

Yes, those exact tones can be pretty easily varied to taste by shifting the undershade.

How dothe white edges survive the black? Is it the contrast - ness,or just avoiding the edges?

Is the Vallejo Steel color you use an airbrush color? It looks really good so i was trying to find it and all i can see is the airbrush paint.
Yes, it says airbrush but it works for either. I have several videos of it in action on the channel including a review of all steel paints.
Cool video although was the 20 mins including drying time or if not how did you speed it up? I find it can take a while
Hair dryer to speed it up. :)

Hey Vince: I've been loving using Makeup brushes for dry brushing and stippling recently, but I've found that it's really really difficult to clean the brushes afterwards. They have SO MANY BRISTLES that color keeps staying deep in the brush long after I think it's clean. Do you have any advice?
Winsor and Newton brush restorer will get the gunk out. Then just clean it with soap.

I've been using your display Imperial Fist tutorial to paint my IF army and love the results but I have been considering switching from Iyanden Yellow to the new Imperial Fist yellow to pump up the brightness. Seeing these results and hearing your enthusiasm with the new color, I think I need to give it a try.
Now the same again but with an airbrush? haha
Hey Vince, do you think you could do a guide for efficiently painting minis with a halved/quartered color scheme? I'm very comfortable using the airbrush for army painting but my Marines Errant take forever trying to block in the two colors carefully by hand instead
My simple answer is don’t do that. ;) - that being said, I’ll see what I can do. :)

The original has a little brown and isn't quite black, the new is more solid neutral black.

Great video - for thinning the contrast with contrast medium, is the reason for that to make the contrast effect a bit more subtle, but still give good coverage? So you don't get as extreme areas of shade that may need to be brightened up as much?

Your top 3 is my top 3! Not so familiar with the lore, so basing that solely on the color scheme's. Have been enjoying painting space marines just to practice yellow red and white. Experimenting with different undershades and having a lot of fun.
I really liked the White Scar marine. Personally, I don't get what people see in the banana marines, but to each his own. The rough stippling definitely provides a much different look than the standard, crisp, and very clean marines we see on the box art. Thanks for the video.
The video's great, as usually, but I wanted to comment in particular that your ordering of the legions is pretty much spot on. In particular I would definitely put the Blood Angels, Imperial Fists and White Scars as the top three (not sure I could order them).
Good video, next time show some airbrush techniques please. Speedpainting with brush is way less fun in my experience.

I use a similar approach when I need to speed paint. Although I tend tonuse contrast paints more as glazes. I wick the extra moisture off on a paper towel, and it leaves a wonderful smooth transparent look.
People underestimate the potency of a colour wash over black, super fast and simple and reads even from a distance.
I'd love to see a vid where you speed paint more imperial fists in different ways and kind of compare them. So different base coats etc. I know if you use a pepto bismal pink as a base then white as your top down highlight you get this really nice orange.
I've seen goobertown post about that originally but I was letting my 3 year old paint a few figs the other day and she did that on accident and it was just one of the nicest oranges I've seen and it made me really want to find more ways to apply that
I am very impressed with how the reds and yellows came out. Like legit looked good not just speed painted.
Richard grey has been doing a bunch of recipes for imperial fist with the new contrast paints, its some fun ways of doing it there to, and this was great with them all. I could not do a model in 20min and be happy with it , but still fun to see
You could have used a pink under shade, then ivory highlight to give the Imperial Fist an orange shading after the yellow contrast was added. That usually comes out pretty well.

I have come to realise I just don't like Contrast paints even for speed painting jobs. The tiding is an issue but even without that things feel...washed out. Base+Shade+Drybrush highlight, then details I think gives a much better overall result and takes only a tiny bit longer and...if you use a suitably coloured primer (thank you Montana Gold!) it might even be faster overall.
No issue, no workflow is for everyone. :)
How would you rate the other yellows in the range? I picked up some Ironjawz and have been satisfied with it, but wonder how it compares to Imp Fist and Bad Moon.
Honestly, I love all three. IF is my fav, but they are all wonderful

have you thought about next steps if you wanted to use this speed paint as a starting point to then improve at a later date? what would they be? Can the roughness of the look be improved upon? would it be easier to just re-paint it from scratch?

In the past, you’ve advocated using non-hobby primer cans. This time, you used the new White Scar. Was this part of a test of the new range, or have you found new appreciation or use for these hobby spray primers?
They sent me some and I wanted to give it a fair shake. Certainly not necessary, but it’s nice as white primer cans go.
Hey Vince. Thanks for the video. I’m trying to do an imperial fist army but I’m having trouble sourcing transfers for them. GW sells them for Horus heresy but not for 40K. Is there a trick to this or has everyone just been free handing their chapter symbols?
I am mostly free handing them or borrowing 30k, not that different
