YOu guys being mean...u just don't appreciate this instructor is giving you free lessons. You are "looking a gift horse in the mouth". if this isn't your level, find some videos that are at your level. I am more advanced but I can see he is a good teacher. wish i had this when i was beginning.
Amen he dont have to give the 1st free lesson. Somebody can definately benefit from this video. Even if you play at a higher level you can still appreciate pointers and outlooks of others. Part of playing an instrument is learning every day. Appreciate the knowledge shared by others
Thanks Luke. I found this useful, even though I've been a bassist for 24 years. I never had any formal lessons. When I was starting out I didn't have the internet.
Once again Luke - Thank You! A new world just opened up, and as with many of your lessons, I couldn’t put my bass down for hours after watching. PS - fortunately, I missed the beginning of this negative back and forth in the comments, but hope it doesn’t affect you...some people are just sad...I know I speak for a vast majority when I say thanks! And good on ya, mate
Great idea for a course. Other courses make you wade through tons of material and filter and organize specific information on bass chords by yourself. Very clear explanations and the info on cleaning the mud out invaluable.
Interesting lesson! I’m a guitar player that occasionally likes to play a little bass and these lessons open up new ways of approaching the bass for me.
Thanks, really good lesson. I heard Jack Bruce say that chords for a bass player were more useful the smaller the group was, like in Cream they were important but with a rhythm guitar (section) you didn't need them as much. I guess that is the reason that most bass teachers don't go into them. Thanks, I will check out the lessons. The "muddy" sound was a good topic to work on.
Thanks Luke, you make it look so easy, and the chord progression is so logical. But of course, my fingers don't stretch far enough to make any but the furthest up the fretboard. What am i doing wrong?
Not in all situations, but mostly its easier to do double stops on the D and G string (example, 7,9 = A5) Or outline the chord but don't play everything in it. Play a 5 on the low E string (an A note) and play a 5 on the G string (a C note), at the same time, then you have the most important notes to imply A minor, the root (A) and the 3rd (C)
Playing Thelonius Monk songs like Blue Monk incorporate this technique . I misspelled Theloius I think? lol I learned more in 4 measures playing Monk songs than with all my years of lessons. He's genius.
Luke, i can get my index finger on B on the E, my little finger on D on the A string but I physically cannot get my ring finger to curl or apply pressure for B on the G string. If I put my ring finger on B first i cannot get my liitle finger to even reach D on the A. Any ideas please?
2 points Luke……. Most beginners play with tab to learn from (at lest this beginner does) would be nice if you could add tab to this instruction. Next most lessons address the symptoms of the problem not the root of the problem. The problem is that we know nothing so a narrative up front in some form would set the stage for success. Thanks for considering these comments.
if your only playing on three strings, how do i skip over the d string since were not using it? im confused because mine still sounds muddy even though im using his fingering.
Hey Lavon - I'm using my thumb for the E and A strings and my index and middle finger for the D and G. You can also strum like a guitar player would as well. I cover all of this in a bonus lesson of the Bass Chord Pro series.
I'm confused...why move off the open D string to playing the D on the A string? Isn't it the exact same octave, there for the exact same sound? No clarity of sound would be gained from that would it? I feel like it's easier to just roll with the open D. Is it just for simplicity of keeping " like shapes," or something when working with other chords?
Callers Voice notes aren't _exact_ per se. For example, playing the 2nd fret of the D string (an E note) is the same note as 12th fret on the E string (an E note). Yet, its tone, and application are different. For example, you could slide from open up to the 12th (an ocatve slide, E to E) try doing that up to the 2nd fret of the D. Its just different, whether its called the same thing or not
It's true what JJWP 88 says, but that's not the point for moving off the open string. The aim is to get a shape that can be moved around the neck so you can basically do the same thing for any root note (on the E-string in this case).
No, you don't *have* to play only with the kick drum. There's plenty of examples of bass lines that don't always line up with kick drums. As long as the bass line and drums work together and *feel* good, then you're golden.
FYI , the strings are counted from the floor (top) up. On a 4 string: 1st G, 2nd D, 3rd A, 4th E. On a 5 string: G D A E B. On a 6 string: C G D A E B.
ummm ummm Awesome. I'm a nubie and didn't want to be playing (learning) in the wrong octave. I wanted to make sure I was playing the correct pitch, not too high or too low. Thank you!
hello, may sound muddy to you by itself (there is nothing I dislike about the sound of bass) but short of moving into the range of guitar, these lower beat frequencies are incredibly musical when playing in a band...you're really missing out on one of the greatest capabilities of the bass...
+Lucas Martinez - Strumming is one way of playing these chords but the method I'm using in the video is almost like a fingerstyle guitarist or a banjo player. I'm using the thumb to play the E-string and my index and middle finger to play the other strings. One advantage of this method over strumming is you don't have to worry about your other string ringing - you just pluck the strings you want to sound.
using pick is definitely fine. you can play the chord by using the pick to play the root note and your middle and ring finger the play other notes at the same time
***** And then you blame everyone except yourself if you can't get a good job. When one of the real problems is you can't even talk or write real words.
sjeverett75 No joy, and no little man - 6'2" 240 lbs and done way more than my share of backing up my chit and words. How about you little punk boy - that's hiding behind his computer. Just wish people that live in this country could actually speak and write english and get the hell off their ass and off the welfare rolls - all while they think they are impressing us with their bullchit gangsta talk.
SuperDrummer311 Read the whole sentence there wizzbang Jesse... "F off and go back tot he wizard of oz lion boy." the "tot he" was obviously a typo and you just move the "t" over and then it's "To THE". SuperDrummer311 Umm....now I'm not saying Scavella doesn't live in "this country", which I'm assuming you mean America, but if you're not aware, there are other countries in the world. Just a reminder...As an American it's embarrassing how many folks there are like you out there who somehow don't understand America is not the world...
well explained! after being bassist for years this has become pretty much basic to me though. and those chords are practicable in a band formation easily. some narrow-minded conservatives here on the other hand maybe dont get that with proper practise everything can become basic. dont mind them!

Good comment to silence all haters. there is so much hate & envy on youtube...

Hows year 30 treating you?
When I get going on your chord lessons the beauty of the possibilities is breathtaking
Once again Luke - Thank You! A new world just opened up, and as with many of your lessons, I couldn’t put my bass down for hours after watching. Thanks, Luke!
I'm just coming back to 'beginning' bass after more than 25 years! Your videos have been very helpful and fun!
And now you're almost at 30! How's it going?
Great idea for a course. Other courses make you wade through tons of material and filter and organize specific information on bass chords by yourself.
Very clear explanations and the info on cleaning the mud out invaluable.
"All The Chords You'll Ever Need On Bass" was expecting 8 minutes of a blank screen.
But seriously this was helpfull.
I love the sound of bass chords. Progressive jazz uses them. Thanks for the lessons.
Interesting lesson! I’m a guitar player that occasionally likes to play a little bass and these lessons open up new ways of approaching the bass for me.
how in the FUCK do you reach your fingers there
Foreplay
That was really helpful. I really like the sounds of the chords played out. Thank you!
THANKS Luke I just love adding chords in my playing this opened more doors for me.
Excellent tutorial - chords played on the bass sound like no other instrument.
XD that "oh fuck" at 2:44
+Fina1Verse haha I lost my shit at that
Fina1Verse lmao I just observed that
Incredibly- well presented and clear. great insights!
Glad you think so Joel! Thanks for watching.
Hey Luke, loves the series. Is there anyway you could put all these videos into a playlist so they're easy to watch? Thanks!
Thank you for this. Simple and easy to understand.
Thanks as a bass player i will take my chords where i can get them so i appreciate this
I know it's not likely, but I hope this series continues. Great tutorial, and very applicable to players of any skill level. :D
I appreciate the technique, it's very helpful
Great video, you dont see many people on youtube who actual know WHAT they are playing!
Verry nice lesson, coming from guitar this is different on one side and verry familiar on the other, love the explenation of it all.
loved the lesson, please keep posting
This just blew my mind haha. you got yourself a new subscriber!
Thanks, really good lesson. So move the third up an octave for brighter sound. Got it.
Thanks.
your video was very helpful. I will be checking our more of them. Thanks
Great, Thank you for taking your time to teach!
Luke, thank you for another informative lesson! My old hands can't make the high D in the last cord position, but it is a cool arpeggio (:>)
You are a GREAT teacher.
Thanks so Much, i Love The Chords on the Bass!!!
thanks you for your clarity and insight!
great start! really liked the video, great basics for major shapes. looking forward to the next 7 vids!
dude, thank you soo much,i really needed that info lol awesome video
Thanks Luke, you make it look so easy, and the chord progression is so logical. But of course, my fingers don't stretch far enough to make any but the furthest up the fretboard. What am i doing wrong?

Good to know.
This was great information. However, some examples in a groove or a track would have help.
Luke, i can get my index finger on B on the E, my little finger on D on the A string but I physically cannot get my ring finger to curl or apply pressure for B on the G string. If I put my ring finger on B first i cannot get my liitle finger to even reach D on the A. Any ideas please?
good job, very well explained. thanks
Very useful, man. Thanks
Great stuff - thanks Luke
Very helpful for beguinners. Thank you:)
Great lesson dude

great tutorial! Thanks for sharing :) subbed .
your vids are very helpful. thanks
I came here for calum hood and lemme tell ya he is amazing
Same lmao
Thank you - that's pretty interesting.
Thank you, very useful tips! Less is more.
So in technical terms, you would take the 3rd interval note in the chord and bring it up an octive, reguardless of the chord?
+Master- Baitor - Yes absolutely, unless you're intentionally heading for a muddly, jazzy sound :)
why is the picture in picture showing even smaller what´s alerady in the main one?
if your only playing on three strings, how do i skip over the d string since were not using it? im confused because mine still sounds muddy even though im using his fingering.
you probably do double stops, or hybrid picking
2:44 F bomb? Hahaha dope
LOL! Hey, Luke is human too and this proves it!!
I just started and it's hard for me to stretch my fingers to reach a C major chord. Is that normal in beginning?
Larry Tate absolutely normal bro. at first, I played using my index and middlefinger only. I just scooted my hand aaaal over the neck to play a riff
Sounds like you are truly bewitched Larry!
N.D Nn
Cool video, my friend
Thanks Jason!
I wish I could see how your right hand is playing the chords. Are you plucking?
Hey Lavon - I'm using my thumb for the E and A strings and my index and middle finger for the D and G. You can also strum like a guitar player would as well. I cover all of this in a bonus lesson of the Bass Chord Pro series.

Does the Bass have to play every time the kick drum sounds or can you play randomly as long as it fits with the drum?
No, you don't *have* to play only with the kick drum. There's plenty of examples of bass lines that don't always line up with kick drums. As long as the bass line and drums work together and *feel* good, then you're golden.
@@BecomeABassist thanks so much. 👍🏻
Good Stuff. Thanks!
What string and fret do I play for the "D" that is located in the middle of the staff on the sheet music?
3rd string (A) 5th fret. Also open 2nd string which is D.
Thank you!
Excellent!
Thank you!
I didn't think chords were played on the bass. So when I first saw it, I was confused
Thanks
Same!

Hi, does the sign up still work ?
I get an error when trying..
good stuff... thumbs up
I have a question, so to play chords on bass do you have to strum??? I never learned that:/
+Lucas Martinez - Strumming is one way of playing these chords but the method I'm using in the video is almost like a fingerstyle guitarist or a banjo player. I'm using the thumb to play the E-string and my index and middle finger to play the other strings. One advantage of this method over strumming is you don't have to worry about your other string ringing - you just pluck the strings you want to sound.
Lucas Martinez double stops are cleaner and easier to play. Similar to power chords on guitar.
(Take a look at RHCP-dont forget me)
Just go full on Primus my dude
Very Good!!
interesting approach to bass.....
Great, thank you.
2:44
So happy you noticed this haha
LOL .. part of the lesson ....
is there a proper name for a g major chord with the b up that high? g major non fangoso?
I'm not sure about a 'proper' name, but you could call it an 'open' voicing as opposed to a close one.
Thank you!
What's your opinion on the ibanez ATK ?
Flawless tone. I use it for my studio work, despite the availability of other more expensive basses. It is just too heavy for gigging.
I'm your 4,000th subscriber. Can you make your logo smaller, it's blocking your frets
So if I want to play G chord with a pick I'm not able to do that because how to hit E,A and G string without hitting a D string?
You can mute string D and then hit all four strings.
Gordan Bosic. I suggest not to use a pick on a bass. You get a cleaner sound with just your fingers
using pick is definitely fine. you can play the chord by using the pick to play the root note and your middle and ring finger the play other notes at the same time
Plenty of great bassists use picks, try Steve Swallow, Justin Chancellor, Cody Wright, Clay Gober etc.
Chris Brock flea uses one for some stuff.
ARe there minor, augmented, and diminished chords?
Very help full or those tht wnt to learn !
what skol goes you?

You're quite welcomed. Like Joe Satriani says, teach what you know. Good luck and have fun.
How can I keep my pinky from curling into my hand?
practice major and minor scales using your pinky to build up its strength
im good at moving my thumbs but the point is i dont know the chords😓😭😢
I'm from SRI LANKA please be kind enough to make a draft of the chords it will be a better understanding to us. thank you
what about your right hand???? I can't see it!!
well explained! after being bassist for years this has become pretty much basic to me though. and those chords are practicable in a band formation easily.

Christ. What gauge string do you use?
The song sober by tool uses all 4 strings as cords the wholes song
2:44 haha. Great videos though!
Ibanez ATK 300 ?
Wery useful PDF file
are you just strumming all 4 strings when playing the chord?
no he is picking each string very quickly
Your mad love
