Bill taught my two boys to swim a decade ago. Gavin was around three, and he learned easily. Ro was 6 and screamed when taking a bath. He could not even get water on his face, he was so scared. 2 or 3 lessons in, Ro was swimming by himself across the pool. He learned autonomy, self reliance, how to find peace in an intense situation. Thank you so much, Bill!
Bill taught my 3 year old to swim. She's 9 now and loves swimming more than anything. We're so grateful he was her introduction to the water. We watched this together tonight then went back and watched our videos of her lessons! A truly inspiring and beautiful film, thanks for making it!
As a new parent and a swimmer I think this film by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack gave me all the feels for all the right reasons. Learning how to swim is definitely the right metaphor for learning how to live and be resilient and be independent.
My little brother was so tiny but he fell into the pool and he had a piece of banana in his mouth but we had both learned to swim because we grew up in Las Vegas. every house has a pool. My little brother held his breath and swam all the way to the other side of the pool and we grabbed him and he still had the little piece of banana in his mouth! We learned to swim really young and it was invaluable. It does give us a sense of inner power I suppose. Bless you for making this film
As a person who has done this for 13 years this is right on the money. I'm a little bit more animated and have a slightly different technique but Bill is so good. I'm NO where near the amount of kids, I think I am close to 800 but whoa this was so good to watch.
My mom took me to lessons at the original Lucile Cowle Swim School back in the day, in Burbank. Lucile Cowle pioneered infant swimming! She even designed the pool area to teach young ones to swim! In my time, there was even a mural of the Charlie Brown and his friends. Thanks, Mom & Lucile! I have had a lifetime of happy, safe swimming! 💖🩵💦
I grew up in MA with a pool. We had a safety hook on a 20’ long pole. I was the queen of the dog paddle. But one night my father said you’re gonna swim from the deep end to the shallow end. The hook will be right in front of you. I did at like 7 and then I watched Esther Williams movies. I still have a beautiful quiet freestyle stroke. Younger I had a styrofoam egg around my waist. To this day I can still shift my weight. Swimming gives kids so much confidence like reading.
I would love to hear from some of the parents in this movie. I'd love to know what they were going through watching their children through these lessons. The range of emotions must have been wild.

As a full time swim instructor this is it, this is how I do it and this is why I do it. And this film will become a tool in my tool box for parents!
Seems to be just as important a lesson for the parents as it is for the kids. 👊🏼
Yeah I was thinking that this must be so hard for the parents to see their kid crying and scared for their lifes.

He should do a parent class with parents who can’t swim!!!! ❤
this is magnificent, delicate and moving… bravo👏👏👏👏
Phenomenal. Bravo Rashida & Will. This piece is about so much more than swimming.
Absolutely beautiful! What a wonderful and meaningful contribution to the lives of children!

Here after it was shortlisted for the Oscar. Such a simple yet beautiful concept.
