As a lifelong Dbacks fan, a 90's kid in AZ. I remember all those contracts and how excited I was for them! Then how let down I was by basically all of them... 😢 Thanks for another banger video Jolly!
Tbh I wasn’t too familiar with your content prior to joining up with JomboyMedia, but I’m glad your personality and Ball Knowin has shown me what I’ve been missin.
Lifelong Dbacks fan here. One piece to consider too though is the fact that along with Pfaadt, Ryne Nelson is 100% deserving a spot in the rotation as another young ace. 10-6 record and a very stout overall 2024 campaign, especially late in the year. I had the privilege of watching him shutout the Dodgers for 5 innings in May. dude is going to have a very solid future in this rotation 👍
Yeah Nelson definitely should have a spot in the rotation. I think Yilber Diaz also should get another chance to start, but I would rather him be in the MLB bullpen than the AAA rotation.
Its amazing the bad luck in some of these contracts...Bronson had never any injury prior to signing and then... Thommy John surgery...Russ Ortiz was a mid rotation pitcher at that point and he just completely lost it. As a lifetime fan of the dbacks i do remember all these movements. Great job here Jolly
A lot of the pitching struggles Arizona has faced as a whole throughout its history can be attributed to the fact that they have always played in one of the strongest hitters parks in baseball. Only the addition of usage of a humidor in 2018 caused the offensive favor to drop to league average levels. Pitching has always been hard there, especially for non-strikeout guys. It's the same deal with the Rockies, but the Rockies never try to acquire big K guys.
As much as I am excited about Corbin Burnes, as a Dbacks fan, I’m also nervous as AZ is where pitchers come to die. I want to be optimistic that this is a good signing, but the Dbacks history of signing good pitchers only to have them disappoint has me traumatized.
I havent watched the video all the way through but i often think of brandon webb when i think of this team and ben sheets when i think if the brewers and my childhood
I almost forgot Russ Ortiz was on the D-Backs! One think i did not know was he was given over 30 million for 4 years!!!! Wow, definitely not worth that even when he was on the Giants for there WS run lol anyways, very good video man
Nothing to take away from the video, amazing, but Burnes is at home, his natural home at the moment where he lives and has a home, with his beautiful family, and his beautiful set of twins, if anything gives him more motivation to hit the bump every 5 days and be the elite pitcher he is. It's a tough N.L West but regardless he is an elite MLB pitcher in the big leagues, top 5 easy!
14:01: They better not hope the jinx continues. Look at the trends in WAR and SO9. His H9 has also trended upward, again in the wrong direction.. He is not missing bats like he used to.
As an AZ fan I'm hesitantly stoked. We always seem to suck even if we have great talent on our team, and pitcher signings are super duper cursed. I've affectionately called it the "Johnson-Schilling Curse", we're paying back for one of the greatest pitching duos baseball has ever seen by being unable to get a legit pitching staff despite the management's best efforts. Even last year, our pitching staff was one of the worst when on paper it should've been one of the best. On paper, DBacks should have a brutal pitching staff next year, but will it be, or is the Johnson-Schilling Curse still in effect? Guess we'll find out.
They still have better pitching than a lot of organizations. With that being said they should go back to the black purple and gold unis . Everyone wears red
Thanks Jubilant Okra, truly painful video to watch as a lifelong DBacks fan, also why Gallen is my second favorite DBacks ace ever. The rest besides him and Big Unit is pain
11:58 Thats amazing that the GM took accountability for the mistake publicly. I'm an M's fan so accountability from up top is foreign to us. Our GM gaslights and insults us and our owner has been in hiding from the fan base.
The dry desert air and 1,000 feet of elevation makes Arizona a bit challenging to play in. Easily the second hardest place to pitch besides Colorado, but it’s a distant second
-1.4 WAR for Monty on a team that missed the playoffs by 1 game. I know there were many other factors that went into that collapse but it stings more when you look at it like that
One downside to the Greinke deal is that it put the DB's front office in a "win now" frame of mind, so they traded Dansby Swanson AND Ender Inciarte for Shelby Miller. Miller's WAR with the DB's was -1.2. Swanson produced 15.2 WAR for the Braves, and Inciarte 10.1 before he fell off a cliff in 2020.
Still wonder if Bumgarner stays with the Giants like Posey and Crawford if he never hurts his shoulder in 2017. He was good in 2016 playoffs. CGSO against the Mets in NYC.
In my dreams. Arizona lands Sasaki. Signs Santander. And trades from their plethora of outfielders and pitchers for Duran. They win the NL West and World Series. In some universe that would be fun to watch.
I personally view the Big Unit's resurgence as a revenge tour against the Mariners who all but said he was too washed for another big money contract. Real ones remember he started it in Houston. Pretty sure there's a video about that on this channel even
I will never forgive Russ Ortiz. Also i know this was only about bad contracts, but a special shoutout to the absolute disaster that was the Shelby Miller trade.
The issue is that the dbacks too often go dumpster diving. They sign guys that they think they can get on the cheap. They always stay on the periphery of the really good, big name pitchers and sign guys like E-rod or stottlemeyer. Or declining superstars like madbum. But when they actually spend big money and get true aces like RJ or grienke, it works.
Not sure why everyone in the media has Montgomery as the 5th starter instead of Ryne Nelson… seems obvious to me that Nelson is going to be in this rotation.
Mad Bum completely lost his command. How is he supposed to follow a pitching plan when he's throwing meatballs down the middle. He legitimately lost his mechanics and was too stubborn to get them fixed. When he was great he didn't consistently throw right down the middle trying to challenge guys.
If they wanted Bronson to be their 3rd MAYBE 2nd, i could absolutely see it. But as an ace? Yikes. Dude was am effective innings eater but at no point should he have been top of any staff
Have to disagree there, he pitched more innings and walked way less people. Yes the strikeouts are down but they always will after anyone has a 243 strikeout season. He has great command and has been incredibly healthy.
If you are Gallen and you see your team hand out these contracts without giving an extension, i’d want to leave as well. There’s not a good reason why Gallen wasn’t extended to age 35, unless the office is concerned about his arm.
@@travis6694 It's also that Gallen is a Boras client and won't agree to an extension before free agency. If you're the DBax you have to look long term. They would have the money for Gallen if they didn't give out those horrible contracts to ERod and Monty.
One thing people need to remember about the Greinke contract is that the DBacks were taking his offensive production into account.
Especially once they added Jeff Mathis, who actually has worse batting stats for his career than noted *pitcher* Zack Greinke
😂😂😂
That’s hella funny
You would think that this is a troll comment. But it really isn't 😅

Always makes me happy seeing a Jolly Olive video

A video for Dalton how nice of you Jolly! As always great watch!

Perfect. We need a video about our closers too. Worst WAR sin all MLB since 1998 and incredible bad luck and bad results
@ Chad Qualls, Adisson Reed, Heath Bell and most recently Paul Seaworld… man, this is painful

MLB TS 19 legend
Him hitting a home run on National Beer day is peak baseball
Love Jolly's approach to this video and so glad it's worked out for him.
That is awesome how you waited and this is how things ended up 😂 great topic to cover, first person I’ve seen string these all together.
as a dodger fan, kudos to the diamondbacks to continue to be a pain in the ass. The NL West is easily the most competitive division in baseball.
Jolly nailed this video, 1000% perfection 🐍🌵
Earliest I’ve been. Thanks for the great content

Would love to see a David Littlefield trade video. He might be the worst GM in history of sports

Amazing pitcher and brought a lot of life during those years. Could hit decent and has his gold gloves.

That contract was a huge bargain. Wow! I had forgotten about it. A lot of gms wish that's what they could pay pitchers now.
11:58 Thats amazing that the GM took accountability for the mistake publicly. I'm an M's fan so accountability from up top is foreign to us. Our GM gaslights and insults us and our owner has been in hiding from the fan base.
I will never understand why Arizona didn't just keep Greinke and/or Corbin if they were going to immediately sign Bumagrner to that type of deal.
I was wondering Burnes was mentioned as an ace
That ownership stake in Chipotle probably is worth more than his actual contract

Great video
Todd Stottlemyre would be an excellent hard mode refguess
1:36 what is on that guy’s chin?
The fact that Bronson Arroyo was the last active 2004 Red Sox player still surprises me
Here's to hoping Corbin Burnes breaks the cycle!

8:07 i love grinkie
its like signing a pitcher in their 30s, to a substantial amount of money, is going to pay off in the long term
I wonder what they would've given Randy Johnson if he were around now... I'm throwing high 30s low 40s
D-Backs are where pitchers go to die.. or leave to thrive. there is no in between.
I hate that we lost Burnes bro
The history is so confusing that Jake thinks he’s a Yankee fan when he reps the d backs
Go D'Backs life long fan Corbin Burnes signing will be huge
Randy Johnson is the King of Arizona
Wow I didn’t realize they made this many bad signings 💀
Is it just me or does Madison Bumgarner kind of look like Rodeo star, Mason Saunders?
"This was the same Dan haren"....who also pitched in chase field then and knew chase field now. Dumb move by bungarner
The owner should just shut his mouth and let Jordan Monty do his thing
Or, Burnes's declined 2024 was a harbinger for things to come and this will be another in a long string of bad overpays.
Have to disagree there, he pitched more innings and walked way less people. Yes the strikeouts are down but they always will after anyone has a 243 strikeout season. He has great command and has been incredibly healthy.
Not Madison Bumgarner
Don't they have a really good pitching coach? Brent Storm? Why do pitchers suck once they get there?
