I really appreciate that voiceover on the clip with Jonah. You said, "my farmer friend, Jonah". Not "My friend Justin's son" or anything else which positions him as anything other than your peer. Not only is Jonah smart and marture, and already pretty skilled at building things of his own, but he is a knowledgeable farmer, so it makes sense that you didn't refer to him like he is a child. But I think a lot of adults would not have spoken of him as a peer like you did, even ones who know him well. It's SO IMPORTANT for kids to have adult friends, especially through their teenage years. Adults who aren't their parents, who can be another resource for support and experiences. Glad to see you becoming one of those people for Jonah... I've always thought he would make a great apprentice for you!
I so agree that kid put lots of adults reasoning ability to shame he’s a great problem solver but then his seems to often ask his opinion on stuff they can do and how they should do it
I build greenhouses for a living, and I have to say I’m really impressed with how you built this! There’s nothing you did here that I wouldn’t have done myself, great job!
Jason: I have rolled plastic upward, as you have for this demonstration, but the rain pools on the roll and created weight that you probably do not need nor want. If you would roll it under instead, the rain will run off and keep it relatively lightweight. Just a thought, before you get the pigs in there and have a harder time accomplishing unrolling and re-rolling. Love your videos.
Love that sometimes you make it up as you go. It’s so encouraging to hear you say that you’re unsure and seeing you go forward anyway. You document whether it works or not and let us see that it’s ok to do the next thing even if you’re unsure. ❤️👍
I agree I think it will work out great for them. I actually like his idea better than the the pig port. Both of them are good idea's I just like this build better becuz it's multi purpose.
You’re gonna love raising pigs 🐖 🐖. We raised them when I was growing up. Me and my sister were in charge of “slopping the hogs” and taking the water hose and cleaning out the pig pen. It had a wooden floor. Got a lot of good bacon ham and sausage for sure. Those were the good ole days. You’ll be ready for two more pigs when you process the ones you raise. Loved the video!!!
Just one tip. Make sure you can bring a trailer up to the door. When its time to make Bacon they can walk in to the trailer on there own . One week before. Bring the trailer in and only feed them in the trailer. That way when it's time you can feed and close the door behind them. That way you and the pigs will have less stress. Good luck
(Andy here ) just want to say this is the best idea for a pig and green house I've seen so far on youtube , I will be doing this the way your showing me , when we find our homestead ,thank you very much for sharing your idea , great.! love it thanks.👍
You could move the tin and cattle panels after you make some compost to the other half and grow a garden where the pigs were. Put up greenhouse plastic on half, save some $. And grow pigs on the other half. Then 2 years down the line that whole thing would have great compost in it.
I've watched yours and Mr. Rhodes channels a lot, but I have to say the way you bent that tubing was the neatest thing since indoor plumbing, my hat's off to you
I just want you to know that this is one of the best how to videos I have seen on UA-cam. You captured all the little details of the build in a clear concise way. Thanks!!
You are headed in the right direction , one being honest with yourself and others and then learning from others. Love watching your videos , learning get so much. That ks
Jason, I strongly advise that you consider a darker cover over the pigs' section as that white tarp will definitely not be enough protection on the pigs against the brutal NC sunshine during the hot summer days. You need to at least provide them with some solid shade protection from the sun or else they might have alternative health issues popping up regarding skin issues etc.
You might be able to use a nontoxic stain or oil which would extend the life of your wood. Otherwise the elements will rot the baseboards in about 4 years. But if you apply an oil each fall they will last much longer. ☺from personal experience. Wonderful structure! So exciting!! Good job!
I like how you always say what acreage you live on. I always have to search online for other channel's land size because this is of a real interest to me. I want to know what one can do with various sizes of homesteads. So thank you for including this when you record.
Man i wish i had the skills to do things like this, thinking about going to carpentry school once I'm done getting my CPA, i think these skills are extremely valuable especially on a homestead
Hay Jason... I normally don't comment on things but as someone that has to move soil, mulch and stuff by hand I thought I could offer a hint. When you start moving your woodchips into the shelter you could put garbage cans in your little trailer, looks like maybe 4. Then fill them with the woodchips. Once you get them close to the shelter you can pick up the whole can and dump the chips exactly where you want them. This saves having to shovel or pitch the woodchips more then you have to. I hope this makes sense. I also wanted to let you know I really like watching you channel. Keep moving forward buddy.
Just found your video. It's been really helpful showing my team exactly what I wanted for our pigs. It'll be bigger as we're hoping to shelter 6 pigs. Thanks for sharing
I've so looked forward to this build and it was worth it. It was an extra bonus to see the young master builder put in a cameo appearance to help you out. Time for a load of chips & some livestock ;)
Thank you for sharing your passion and special detail on how to get all material. This makes my passion to dedicates my life to helping my foster children who want to learn to build the thing easier.
Hey Jason. Changed greenhouse plastic for a living before. Good to start at the Apex of the arch on both sides first, starting point usually corresponds to a manufacturing fold in the plastic. Work your way down on both side of the arch then along your runner tract front to back. Extremely tight, wrinkle free, and withstands wind a lot better.
I am beyond inspired! I want to make these for every single animal pen i need to make, then my green houses, my car port... and more. you did an amaizing direct informative video! it was easy to follow, you made it look extreamly simple, you gave good reasons why you did things. AMazing
The newer treated wood is safer, the chemicals used to treat are now natural substances. I love this, wish I could do something like this myself. Need a good handyman. I should hire you and Jonah. I love this build it’s exactly what I need for a small greenhouse and my chickens.
Looks great. I think you'll enjoy raising pigs. You don't have to keep them very long. We kept ours from spring to fall. Usually weighed from 300-400lbs. Love the video.
Thanks for making the narration of your videos with detailed instructions! Perfect for a woman like me where i really have no choice but to do things on my own. Very much appreciated. Great video.
We live down the road from you in Hendersonville and we’re also raising pigs for the first time and we’re scared about it too. We only have a little over an acre. We’re starting on their shelter later this month.
Looks great !! If the hogs start rooting under your base board. Put a strand of barbwire in so they dont like getting poked in their snouts and stop their rooting. Also cast in place concrete ground feeders are nice. It keeps them from flipping feeders over. We raise 4 pigs a year and name them Breakfasr / Lunch / Dinner and Trader for when you sell trader , It woll pay for all the feed for the other stock. Dont be afraid to butcher your own hogs. You will be a pro after just 1 processed hog. Good Luck !!!
The portability of this structure makes it great for anyone renting their land. I also think it would not be too difficult to fine used posts from a word fence being pulled up. Great project. I am inspired.
Cut notches about 1" deep, on the bottom of your crossbar bolt, that line up with the cleats that hold it. When you slide it in place it will settle into the notches and if the pig play 'bump the gate' the won't gradually vibrate the bolt out of the cleats.
Hi..... Jason that is so nice and beautiful pig 🐷 shelter I love your video I really enjoy did you show us very clear sharp neet and clean, thank you for sharing your video homestead chicken farmer garden 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐥🌱🎥👍👍👍
I came over from the Hollers after seeing you helping out. It was Great of you to work on the floor over there. I know they must have really appreciated it. I look forward to learning more about your homestead and journey. You put a lot of thought and work into your shelter. Kudos to you for considering the multi use and transportable factors of the build as well as the needs of the pigs. Blessings and best wishes. Carole in the UK
You got this, that shelter will hold the pigs.. We have ours in with 3 hot wires, on 1/4 acre. Love the video , the shelter is amazing.. I would love one for a greenhouse..
See early signs of spring-- part of the ground the grass was starting to grow. I have a few months to go before I see green in the pine barrens of NJ. Nice blue skues-- ours have been gray for days.
Have you thought about a pig tractor? I've been toying with the idea so I can direct the tilling around my orchard. It's a postage stamp orchard of newly planted trees.

Agreed. If I put anything on the ground save for the raised beds, its pre-treated. Even then, the wood is stained to last longer.
