- The story of the Pioneer Health Centre, Peckham. The Centre was designed and equipped as a community club where the whole family might enjoy their leisure together. This video was made from material preserved by the BFI National Archive. Find out more: catalogue.wellc....
The Centre was in St. Mary's Road, Peckham and I was a member. At that time it cost 1/0 (10p) per week. Even at that price people were reluctant to pay.
Actually it is not rubbish - it is not above criticism, but it is a wonderful part of our public broadcasting heritage, for all its faults. What do you want - the Murdochs, the Barclay twins, the Earl of Rothermere, the pornokings and Russian oligarchs, you really want them instead. or only. They are the ones with the vested interest in cutting and closing the bbc.
Actually I know Peckham, I worked in an office from the front of which we could see the Bun House, the old Guardians of the Poor soup kitchen building, and the back overlooked the south end of the old canal before it was filled in and grassed over. So it was a few years ago, you will see....
That was my play centre, I loved that building.
What a wonderful far sighted experiment
It beats sitting on the computer or iPad or mobile at the young people do today
I tried but I couldn’t find the no 35 tram bro
