I met Toy in the mid seventies at an outdoor concert with Firefall and Elvin Bishop. The band while waiting their turn on stage, came over and introduced themselves to my cousin who was caring for her horses she boarded nearby. She outfitted all the band with horses to ride before going on stage, they thanked, then tipped her very generously...paid her feed bill for weeks. True southern gentlemen.

Toy Caldwell was a music legend. You can see in this interview he speaks completely at ease and he shares what he knows and is a humble man. Nothing but respect for the leader of my favorite band, MTB. To have his talent, to go through Vietnam, getting wounded, and to create some of the best music ever recorded and to still be a normal person shows the depth of character of this great man. That boy played his ass off! I had the privilege to see the Marshall Tucker Band play one of the best sounding live shows ever, period (back when there were bands who were worth a damn). Toy rocked as hard as Hendrix, as bluesy as Clapton and as sweet and sophisticated as Chet Atkins. And too f#@%! many have never heard of him. An invaluable contribution to American music.

Since 1969 I've been a fan of jazz, and I thought nothing got any better. Then my buddy, a southern rock fan, put on some Marshall Tucker while we smoked some herb. And I was hooked. Along with the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band were about as polished and sophisticated as any rock band out there and Toy Caldwell was a big part of that. I swear before my God that Toy could have moved into jazz without any problem whatsoever had he been inclined. He was that good.

MTB most definitely belongs in the R&R Hall of Fame. Them and The Allman Brothers and early Charlie Daniels Band had such a great sound. Nobody else was blending Rock and country with jazz and blues and it sounds like it would be a mish mash of music but they all make it sound so unique. That was a great era for music. Never be another like it.

Alright!! I'm from Greenville as well. My first memory of the MTB, was listening to Heard It In A Love Song in late 70s. I'm too young to have seen them live in that era, but since then, I've become a huge fan of all their music. Great musicians, who had a variety of influences including jazz. I did meet Paul Riddle when I was a kid and he couldn't have been nicer. They were professional and you can tell they worked hard at their craft. MTB did not just phone it in. They paid their dues.

I think they definitely fit into the 70's music. When I moved to California in 1978, I met many people who were fans and loved their music. The one other big name out of SC was James Brown. He and MTB made us proud with their wildly popular music. I'm pretty old so I can get away with that comment :-)
To this day though, my personal favorite album is their first. " Can't You See" was perfect and the other songs on that album rocked too.

This is how I want to remember Toy. He's happy and he's so healthy looking. It's like he's being appreciated and loved by Bobby and it obviously is a joy for Toy. It is my wish that the music will live on and that many budding young guitar players will discover the absolute excellence of Toy's playing and writing. Toy was a real force that should be revered and elevated especially in the 2020's where there seems to be a musical wasteland. BTW, I saw Wet Willie at Birmingham's Boutwell auditorium in like '72 when they only had two albums out. Lynyrd Skynyrd was wholly unknown at this point and opened for Wet Willie. Jimmy Hall is a treasure himself. I've always loved Wet Willie and I think Drippin' Wet is the greatest unknown live rock album of the 70's. I still think at 5:00 on Fridays Weekend is the official kick it off anthem which should be followed by Blackberry Smoke's "Feel A Good One Comin' On". Now that gets my weekend started. Please check out Wet Willie's "Left Coast Live" for a true forgotten gem.

Obviously they were very important to the Southern rock genre and inspired country music to expand its horizon. What is your take on how they fit in to the music industry in the 70s? Would you consider MTB to be the greatest band to come out of South Carolina? I do. By a country mile. I'm proud of Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius Rucker and Edwin McCain. But they're not in the same league as MTB. MTB should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Surprised that Toy didn't reference Skynyrd as "what happened to Southern Rock". Let's face it, 10/20/77 signified the end of Southern Rock. I know the MTB die hards might disagree. Not trying to take ANYTHING from the other great SR acts, they were all great!!

I think the name and or logo really is as important as the artists, cause I remember as a teenager, before i ever knew who they were, the first time I came across their album, their logo name flew out at me, and I said, I gotta listen to this, this some serious stuff here.

That blind man Marshall Tucker may never knew how his own name would carry on thru Toy and his musical genius.
My grandfather was named General. That was his name. Where are all the young mother's out there to name their babies some really cool names like Marshall or General?
