-Our Intro Song "Feel the Love" From Alex's band
open.spotify.c...
Their cover of Simon and Garfunkel's song "Hazy Shade of Winter" is a total banger. They rock it out. Also their song "Hero Takes a Fall" impressed Prince so much, he offered "Manic Monday" to them.
I think they heard Hazy Shade of Winter in a livestream but it was a while ago.
I love Hazy Shade of Winter
@@rockyroad7345 "Hazy." One of the best covers ever. In league with "Mr. Tambourine Man" (Covered by The Byrds) and "All along the Watch Tower" (Covered by Hendrix).
^^^Definitely this!
Prince was impressed by Susannah Hoff's ass. Who wasn't? That's why he "offered" it to them.
Another great song by Prince written for female voices. Two other good songs by The Bangles are Walk Like An Egyptian and their cover of Hazy Shade of Winter.
Their cover of Hazy Shade is an epic banger.
Going Down to LIverpool from their first album.
I think it all happened because Prince wrote, recorded it, and then realized the song really didn't suit his voice or style, so he wisely gave it over to The Bangles to do their classic cover. I think Prince did that a number of times where he realized the song didn't feel like his, so he let someone else record it.
@@scottboswell6406 "Hazy Shade of Winter." Yes! Whenever this channel gets around to a category called something "Best cover songs," this would be one. Bangles amped up that Simon and Garfunkel song and made it truly killer.
@@RicoCosta317 Indeed. One of the best covers ever.
I can't believe no comments have mentioned Eternal Flame as the Bangles song to hit!! It's one of those songs that get so much radio play that it gets overlooked, but it's honestly a very well written pop ballad with a brilliant vocal performance from Susannah Hoffs, definitely the Bangles best imo.
I agree. Since my divorce in 1999, Eternal Flame makes me cry- but art is supposed to move you. The song is timeless.
The Bangles are never a guilty pleasure. Proud to love them.
Ditto! This particular track is one I don't really go back for, but they're such a good band. I love em too.
Prince was a genius. He wrote and produced this song.
I didn't know that, but musically it absolutely sounds like a prince song
Prince didn't produce it. The track was completely re recorded by The Bangles with their own producer.
@@oaf-77literally - he used the same melody in the verses as 1999
He didn’t produce it. He wrote the song and gave it to the Bangles. They redid/rerecorded it. Prince heard it before they released it. Guess he liked what they did as he left their version alone 😂
Prince’s original version: ua-cam.com/video/WnPX-uI7ivM/v-deo.htmlsi=MeOfavWkhnsJwBLa
My favorite Bangles song is definitely "If She Knew What She Wants."
Absolutely yes. Better with the female voices.
Easily the best song on Different Light. It's great.
He’d be giving it to her…
Many a young man fell in love with Susannah Hoffs (lead singer of this song) back in the day. I being one of them. She is still a beautiful woman.
Her Instagram will still have you crushing hard.
The Bangles all played their own instruments, and all of them performed lead vocals, which was rare back in the 80's for female bands. Susanna Hoffs, who sang lead on this song, played rhythm guitar, Vicki Peterson played lead guitar, Michael Steele played bass and Debbi Peterson played drums. They used a session keyboardist when recording albums, but that's all.
They also wrote most of their music.
@@gilliankirby But not their hits.
Yes. She's as beautiful as her voice!
Written by Prince, this song was huge, and yes, a well-crafted POP SONG. The Bangles were musicians and played their own instruments. My absolute favorite song by The Bangles song is Going Down to Liverpool.
mine too!
As already commented, "Hazy Shade of Winter" is an epic cover.
Happy 66th birthday Susanna Hoffs!!!
She was my first crush back in the day. ❤❤❤
And she’s aged like a fine wine. Gracefully without tons of surgery and still looks great.
Ahhhh. You can imagine Prince singing this as he was writing it.
Totally
This isn't supposed to be a masterpiece. It's just a happy song for a Monday morning. It has its place in your music library
That's the crux of reaction channels, particularly ones that are more analytical by nature -- not every good or great song is a banger or s-tier material, and can easily fall flat.
Tis a superbly written pop song - no shame in liking it.
Susanna Hoffs. Beautiful.
Great timing A & A. Today (1/17) is the birthday of the legendary Susannah Hoffs. The lead singer of the Bangles. Classic track. The Bangles need to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside the Go-Gos. Very underrated and iconic band.🎸
Belinda Carlisle was/is gorgeous too.
@@garymaidman625 No doubt about it.
Yes, agreed!
MTV - Susanna Hoffs may just have been the cutest girl on TV and I'm sure that helped this song. Susanna at 66 is still a beautiful woman
That’s the reason I listened
It's her birthday today!
There were a few around this time, she was hot, but so was Carly Simon and my personal crush, Belinda Carlisle. Both Carly Simon and Belinda Carlisle are still beautiful now, Belinda is also 66, Carly in her 80s.
And today is her birthday !!
@@garyarnett1220that comment has already been made
Prince was so prolific in the early 1980s that he not only wrote songs that were hits by other artists, but also organized entire other musical groups to (mostly) perform his songs. Since you like funk a lot Alex, I'd suggest you check out the group "The Time" - other than the lead singer, the entire debut album by the group was actually all performed by Prince. My favorite album of theirs is the follow-up "What Time Is It?" with the song "777-9311" a particular funk/rock highlight.
jungle love....oh we oh we oh.
Jungle Love by The Time is everything
The Time were a great 'enemy' in Purple Rain :)
Definitely a guilty pleasure. Harmonies and the baroque piano riff are the highlights.
There is no guilt for me, at all, in the pure pleasure of this song! No apologies! 🙂I don't see any reason for anyone to feel guilt over loving this one. It's one of Prince's most catchy songs, and The Bangles' recording of it is both an '80s classic, and a timeless pop masterpiece, to my ears!
Hell yeah, this is a freaking classic!!
Their song "In Your Room" always sent my brother to his room alone.😍
Today is Susanna Hoffs birthday, show her some love!
That's right! Don't hassle the Hoffs. She may be the most beautiful woman for her age or any age. When she looks at you, you know you've been looked at. Her voice on Bell Bottom Blues or Feel Like Makin' Love is spectacular!!❤ She's quite the writer as well.
Thanks for doing what you do, my mom has entered end of life stage. I introduced her to your channel and she can’t get enough. She says you should check out The Rose by Bette Midler in her words the most beautiful song ever written.
I hope you and your mom are doing ok. I’ll check out The Rose 🤘
The Rose is an amazing song.
Anything by Bette Midler is pretty good.
Too bad you weren’t looking at the video for this…oh my Susana Hoffs you ruined my adolescence 🥰
I think what puts some Bangles songs on my playlist is the background vocals! "If She Knew What She Wants" and "Eternal Flame" are nice.
It is a pop song and it was meant to be, huge radio hit and still one you can listen to again and again. If it comes on the radio today you listen.
They were, and are, a talented group of musicians.
The correct Bangles song to start with is Hero Takes a Fall from their excellent first album. It's very 60s rock influenced. Another great song from that album is Going Down to Liverpool.
All Over The Place is my favorite album by this band. Great cover with Hoff’s Rickenbacker and her legs.
It wasn't studio musicians. The original lineup included Susanna Hoffs (guitar and vocals), Vicki Peterson (guitar and vocals), Debbi Peterson (drums and vocals), and Annette Zilinskas (bass). After Zilinskas left in 1983 to focus on other projects, Micki Steele, formerly of The Runaways, joined as bassist and vocalist, cementing the classic lineup.
What a cracking pop song, nothing pretentious, just a damned good Sony that never fails to put a smile on my face!!!😁😁🇬🇧
All their songs have really good vocal harmonies, that was their specialty !
One of the things I like about watching their videos is you can see that they’re also good musicians and played their own instruments. David Kahne was the keyboard player and producer for the Bangles' song "Manic Monday" and Greg “Harpo” Hilfman was a hired keyboard player for the band during their 1989 tour. There’s a good video of their live concert in Pennsylvania in 1986, the annotated version is the best one. Fun fact, Micki Steele the bass player was originally with the Runaways along with Joan Jett and Lita Ford.
For Andy’s return: That’s What I Like About You. Epitome of fun, danceable garage rock. Right in Andy’s wheelhouse, huge pick me up banger.
Another great song written by the legendary Prince
Beat me to it. The Sunday "fun" sorta suggests it, too.
Fantastic band and great live 👍🏻
Walk Like an Egyptian is the one for me ❤
Susanna Hoffs still has the cassette Prince sent her of the demo of this song. How cool is that ?
It's my guilty pleasure. I was in my twenties and it really hit home. Still love it, especially the music composition- it just makes me bounce up and down when I'm in the car or walking across the room.
in the 80's, everything prince touched turned to gold.
Let's Do a Banger for Andy's Return... Do the Stones, Miss You. Cuz we all did.
YES
Yes!! ❤❤❤
Lets hope he brings a case of wine 😉
@joshjacobs3906 haha great lyrics, tune, energy. Haha.
Thy will be done
Wow this instantly puts me right back to high school. It was all over the airwaves.
Seen them in concert several times back in the day, and these ladies could rock! Far more than other female new wave bands at the time (including the Go-Go's). And they're still out there touring, and still sound and look fabulous! Lead singer Susanna Hoffs, still has the sexiest "side-eye" in the business. However, besides the three famous covers ("Manic Monday", "Hazy Shade of Winter", "Going Down To Liverpool"), they wrote most of their own material. Check out their first single, and total guitar banger, "Hero Takes A Fall". It's the song that brought the band to Prince's attention.
Whoa whoa! The Go Go's rock just as hard!
@@blanetalk yes, they do.
@@blanetalk Not really, although I like them as well. I've seen the groups back to back live and, while the Go-Go's put on a good show, and their vocals were strong, they we only nominally proficient on their instruments compared to the play of The Bangles, a true "guitar band" (lead guitarist Vicki Peterson can shred). Both bands emerged from the Los Angeles post-punk scene, and both released their debut albums in 1981. But the Go-Go's original material is pure, candy pop; "We Got The Beat" is about as hard as they get. The Bangles were formed out of L.A.'s Paisley Underground scene, which was made up of groups playing a mixture of 1960s-influenced rock, including the jangly British sound initially featured on their early albums. Check out this clip from 1984 of The Bangles first appearance on Letterman, jamming hard on both "Hero Takes A Fall" and "Going Down To Liverpool" (ua-cam.com/video/PMdvPYw0hA4/v-deo.html). The mix is raw but the performance is electrifying (the four-part harmonies sound great). Now compare that to a 1984 clip of the Go-Go's playing "Head Over Heels" and "Yes or No" on the Tonight Show (ua-cam.com/video/pZgxiBWaFMc/v-deo.html). Like comparing the Rolling Stones to Barbie.
🎶And I won't feel bad at all/When the hero takes a fall...🎶
@@alan73795- The Go Go's were built around the silky smooth vocals of Belinda Carlisle, so while they might seem more like pop than rock to you, they can definitely rock. Nice of you to cherry pick the poppier clips to make your point. Now let me make mine:
I Wanna Be Sedated (yes, a cover) -. ua-cam.com/video/cjlKjZy2Qi8/v-deo.htmlsi=5N3gxwqLdGSZaAfB
Turn To You - ua-cam.com/video/Toe_d1xRMGE/v-deo.htmlsi=i-FWxoF2qowaWqtC

Stuck In My Car - ua-cam.com/video/sVbbp_xVkhA/v-deo.htmlsi=XRHLhhiE4yFkVVk5
All of these rock harder than Manic Monday, Eternal Flame or If She Knew What She Wants.
But I'm just saying that they are both talented bands that really entertained a lot of people in the pop/rock world, and there's no need to slight one to make the other look good.
Do not forget “Going Down To Liverpool”
Just a fun good song. Not supposed to be serious rock, it’s fun pop.
Walk Like An Egyptian is iconic and a total banger.
Woke up to this song during the late 80's through the late 90's. I believe WPGC played it every Monday morning at 6am. Great song!
No Hate. Love this song ❤
The Bangles are perfection. They came up in LA as part of the Paisley Underground that included other 60s inspired bands like The Three O' Clock, Dream Syndicate, The Pandoras and Redd Kross. The Paisley Underground was influenced by bands like LOVE (which you should def. hit) and The Byrds and Swinging London. All the early records of the Paisley groups were harder sounding at first but softened up to the more 60s pop sound rather than the harder 60s garage sound they started with.
Prince caught wind of the movement and was really taken with it. It influenced his direction as well as helping him to bring these bands to a more national stage.
I would highly recommend listening to The Bangles first ep record, its a more stripped down, tough 60s sound.
I love this album and song, it's perfect pop. Not cheesy in the least, rather dreamy and groovy. Also highly recommend "Going Down to Liverpool" (check out the video as well) which is another perfect pop song. ❤
The Bangles were a great all female band! 👏
I didn’t think much of this song back in the day, but I love it now. Written by Prince, it’s a good song that suited the band well.
The Bangles straddled the line between Rock and Pop. Both "Manic Monday" and their very Rock cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" got to #2 on the Hot 100 while the Rock/Pop/Dance/Novelty "Walk Like an Egyptian" and the Pop ballad "Eternal Flame" were worldwide #1 hits. Four lead singers.
Love The Bangles! Even all the way back to when they were The Bangs!.
@@JsscRchlDrsy They could have been called THE BANGERS. It's what they do! Only referring to music of course. Hazy Shade of Winter is a perfect example. The video is awesome and timeless. Suzy could have been a much bigger movie star than she was. The camera, like me, loves her!! Mr Roach is a very fortunate gentleman.
The song is fun and relatable 😊
Their biggest songs are Eternal Flame and Walk Like an Egyptian, which you might also find a bit cheesy, but such good fun. Other good ones include "In Your Room," "If She Knew What She Wants," "Walking Down Your Street," and a song called "Following," which is a deeper cut (I don't think it was released as a single). It is a gorgeous slow song with great acoustic guitar. It's also one of the few songs that isn't sung by Susanna Hoffs.
I'm pretty sure their first album, All Over The Place, would be your cup of tea. The guitars are fuzzier, the lyrics are sharper and the harmonies are as good as it gets. It's a lot more garage-y. Rolling Stone said of the harmonies: When these four women raise their voices together, there is no more joyous sound in rock.
Yep. they were more of a psychedelic-influenced jangle pop/power pop band on All Over the Place or on their pre-Bangles EP Ladies and Gentlemen...the Bangles. Their song Want You from that EP, and their cover of Love's 7 And 7 Is are rockers.
Song was written for their lead singer by Prince (or he gave it to her as a gift etc)
He had a crush on her, but I don’t think they ever dated.
GOOOOOOOOD MORNING A&A FAMILY! ☮️💟♾️
Exactly, every thing you said. The song is fine and so were the ladies
Walking Down Your Street and Going Down To Liverpool are my faves of theirs. They were all excellent musicians and great musical role models for we young girls at the time.
You have to hear - The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter ( Rockn Song!!)) Need to Watch the Video!
Have always loved this song ❤😊
Their first album, All Over The Place, was more rock. Their record company pushed them in more pop direction. Hero Takes a Fall is a great song from their first album.
Walk Like An Egyptian is my favorite.
Manic Monday is such a perfect piece of 80s pop. As others have said, check out Walk Like An Egyptian and their version of Hazy Shade of Winter.
Ahhh the memories…You seemed more into it than I thought you would be . Just a fun one as you say.
It's a great pop song. Loved it back then, love it now. I often play a "Best Of" Bangles album in my car while driving. It's not too aggressive, but optimistic, energetic and fun.
You nailed it..just a really well crafted pop song.
Alex- you said you should drop a poll of songwriters who perfectly fit the style of other bands who they wrote for. You already started doing some Carole King. She alone (or in collaboration with her first husband) wrote ONE HUNDRED and EIGHTEEN songs that hit the Billboard Top 100 for others and then later for herself...
Good tune. Prince wrote under the moniker Christopher (if memory serves, Christopher Tracy, his character's name in Under the Cherry Moon
Hazy Shade Of Winter is a great cover ❤
The best thing about this song is the keyboard riff at the beginning.
The band features Susannah Hoffs on Rhythm guitar, Vicki Peterson on lead guitar, Debbie Peterson on drums and Michael Steele on bass. All four women sing and alternate on lead vocals. The keyboards are by session musicians. All four also write however they also did songs written by others.
Michael left the group a while back and was later replaced by the group’s original bassist (from before their success).
They based themselves on The Beatles. Loved them, of course. Girl power, grrrr. lol. Hey Alex hey Andeeeee, love you guys. xxx
The Bangles had some fantastic radio singles, this being one of them. Out of songs written by Prince performed by others, Martika's "Love, thy will be done" is my fave.
Again if you see the video, the Bangles were so beautiful, a great picture of 80s life. The same for Drivers Seat. Awesome official video.
This was their get-big-airplay-on-radio pop song, written by Prince. In truth The Bangles were really more about rock and roll. They have some real nice ones too. The Bangles were a really talented female rock band.
I love this song
Another song to check out by the Bangles is one they reformed to record for the second Austin Powers film. "Get The Girl" is an often-overlooked rocker.
Great song written by Prince.
Great song from my childhood
I agree, just a fun pop song with some nice Orcestra.
A good-looking group of talented ladies.
It was written by Prince because he was dating the lead singer at the time, Susanna Hoffs.
They never dated.
@gilliankirby Sorry. It was a rumor. Susanna found him charming but he gave the group the song because he was a fan. She didn't let it go any further.
Written by Prince. This was a big Bangle hit and still gets a lot of air time. Good tune.
Loved the eighties ..
A great song with a great band❤❤❤❤
nice harmonies, a good simple pop song
Hate? Lots of love and respect out there for the Bangles!
These Bangles’ songs are worthy listens:
“Following” (1985)
“Anna Lee” (2011)
“Going Down to Liverpool” (1984)
“In Your Room” (1988)
“Walking Down Your Street” (1985)
“If She Knew What She Wants” (1985)
“Hero Takes a Fall” (1984)
“Silent Treatment” (1984) (maybe their hardest rocking song)
“Dover Beach” (1984)
You can see videos of the band live ... they DO play on their own song. A very decent band.
This was the lead single from their second album "Different Light." After their first, "All Over the Place" made a moderate splash as an indy, the suits got ahold of them and made them poppier and more male gazy. The resultant tensions eventually tore the band apart. I still love that first album and imagine what could have been if the band had been allowed to pursue their vision. Most of "Different Light" and on doesn't land for me.
It's a very catchy pop song. Not epic, but it served its purpose. Susanna Hoffs was a cutie.

They did this unplugged maybe 10 yrs ago. (Suzanna hoffs still was beautiful btw)
But she intentionally omited the " make some noise" part
Susanna Hoffs! One of the most beautiful women in the world, singing lead on this one from the all girl band! They have a great catalog!
Great assessment Alex. Not to take away from the extremely talented Bangles but part of their success was they were on during the height of MTV and they were easy on the eyes. Love their cover of Simon and Garfunkel's Hazy Shade of Winter. Please get back to earlier in the 80s and the Go Go's for more rock tendencies.
Nobody ever talks about this one, but their song about Sylvia Plath “The Belljar” slaps pretty hard.
The Bangles have rockers....
..this one is for specific audiences.
It's light fluffy...for the "corp world".
Nice reaction! Hazy Shade of Winter all day long. One of those covers that better than the original.
The lead singer of this song is super cute!!!
This is another song written by the late great Prince 💜
